Re: Tuesday, March 7, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

The 1614 part really threw me off for awhile as well. I landed on "30 years war", but then convinced myself (correctly, as it turns out) that was 1618-1648, not 1614.

Finally gave up on the 1614 part, realized "Estates-General" sounded French, and got to 1789 at the last second.

Well that's a fairly concise thread summary.

As the previous poster said, I would start attacking this problem rather than worrying about trying to memorize a million random bits of data. The bang for your buck will be much higher.

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Planes were first used in WWI. All you need to know. Which I didn't. And the clue didn't say that PLANES were first used, just that the corps was. Get out of your own way. "In 'Khaki Wings' a young British man courts danger by joining the fledgling Royal Flying Corps during this war." Tha...

Why was Rob ruled incorrect on, "Song of the South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut" ? The second half is the full name of the movie, and I don't think the clue clarified TV show vs movie. The category was called Movie Before, TV After . That response is Movie Before, Movie After. Ah, I for...

After going through names like Calvert, Baltimore, Arundel, Carroll, Howard, Fredrick, Charles, etc. I got to McHenry about halfway through the time. I've never heard of him as a person, but the name "Ft. McHenry" is pretty famous as the site of the battle where the SSB was written, plus I...

Instaget FJ for me, but like a previous poster, I had no idea it was previously established by FDR and named Shang-ri-la. I thought it was created by Eisenhower, since I knew he named it after his grandson. Also wording the clue "a Maryland area" helped immensely. I did spend the remaining...

Re: Thursday, February 23, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Once again, writers: Mary Magdalene, from whom Jesus cast out seven spirits, is never Biblically identified with Mary the sinful woman who wiped Jesus' feet with her hair. Some Christian traditions--most notably the Roman Catholic--say they are the same person. Other traditions--most notably the Ea...

I was stuck on Berlin for about 20 seconds due to focusing on 1961, but was puzzled about the 2015 recent news part before it finally dawned on me. I think I would have had enough time to cross out the wrong answer and write the correct one.

Pretty quick get on FJ - and I felt confident sticking with it. I do want to echo someone post on page 1 about the Teddy Roosevelt clue, as my thought process went something like: "Oh that sounds like it would be Teddy. But it's 1909 - one year too late. But maybe it was before the inauguration...

Re: Your Screenname: What inspired it?

Mine is a somewhat callous Catch-22 reference - it should properly be "Snowden's cold."

Chose it years before the NSA leaks several years back. Bad coincidence - oh well, sigh. Now every post of mine is probably flagged for that keyword in some database...

Re: Wednesday, February 8, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Proverbs for $200 was total negbait since "king of Israel" is going to be pavlovian for David at $200 about 99% of the time. You sure on that? Solomon is known for being the wisest man on earth, for building the 1st temple (it was called 'Solomon's Temple'), for writing the book of Prover...

Looks like I'm the first to pick up the Kochel number LT. The funny thing is that I studied it only last night! After missing the Grand Canyon Suite on Monday I decided to spend some more time on classical music, and this was the result. What's weird is that I was just explaining to my wife Opus (O...

Re: Monday, February 6, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Well on several of those archive clues, "Symphony #9" should be acceptable - no nickname needed. Now the real trick would be convincing the judges to accept Dvorak's "Symphony #5", given that was its previous name before musicologists renumbered things. I have played the whole pi...

Actually, a lot of folks get the two confused, especially when National Parks and National Forests are in close proximity. But NPS is part of Interior, and the USFS is under Agriculture. I was going to post this fact, but you beat me to it! It's weird though, since I think of USDA as being associat...

Re: Monday, February 6, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

And for first - I really don't see a scenario of 2nd wagering only $200 as likely enough to risk dropping below 2nd on the chance they bid $0. If you're going to go small in 1st, shouldn't you max out at $200? Or perhaps $0 yourself? First place betting $399 is an effective counter to a standard 2n...

I didn't realize it was such a little known fact that Ringo sang Yellow Submarine. I figured a few people would get it just because that's the only song they know for sure was sung by Ringo. But so far we're only hearing from people who either a) have a fairly deep knowledge of the Beatles' catalog...
