Tori was in a very enviable situation such that she didn't need to wager anything to almost guarantee a wildcard spot. So, she could have stood pat or wagered the MSB or anything in between. She chose the middle ground, and, if she was (or they were as a whole) paying attention to those details, she knew immediately thereafter that she was advancing to the next round.

Alex didn't even mention the singer Tori Amos? This is the first teen game I was able to see & the easy questions mean I'll just wait till the final. Can't wait for the TOC!

I got it by noticing that they were asking for a composer who did his last something-or-other at the age of 35. Of course, that doesn't *guarantee* it's Mozart, but I knew Mozart died at 35, so I went for it.TenPoundHammer wrote:Okay, then what was the key to Mozart on $1200?
Another one where I made a lucky educated guess was "Faulkner" because of "Southern author".

My bad, thought FJ would be a triple get. Seemed too easy.
After seeing the double-up, was afraid Tori would collapse like little earthquakes, but it worked out for her.

Yeah, if you're going to cut into your impressive probably-geed-enough-for-wildcard-score at all, might as well cut into it enough to win on a double-up, which would not have been much different of a wager.xxaaaxx wrote:Instaget FJ. My only problem with her wager was that she bet anything at all.

By the way, more presidents were *born* in Virginia than in any other state, but if we adopt a looser definition of "came from", people might be able to argue that more presidents came from Ohio than Virginia.

Yes, but they didn't say "came from" (at least not in this clue). They used the word 'native', which, of course, means "the place one was born".skullturf wrote:By the way, more presidents were *born* in Virginia than in any other state, but if we adopt a looser definition of "came from", people might be able to argue that more presidents came from Ohio than Virginia.

Fair enough. And it's all a side issue anyway, since this FJ was only about four presidents.

1791, Mozart composes The Magic Flute.
On December 5th that same year Mozart dies.
1985, Austrian rock singer Falco records...
ROCK ME AMADEUS!!
That song has helped answer so many trivia questions over the years.

Judges: Hammer Yammer instead of Hammer Clammer for rhyming ball-peen noise? No judge can save me from drawing a blank trying to find a match for Eros instead of using Cupid.
Yes, Leonard Cooper had the perfect name to get a BBT clue. Tori Amos? Very unlikely to see a clue about that singer for the teens.
I must have let the Reretaken Down thread influence my work on the FJ clue as I solved it ass backwards. My mind went to most recent guy Teddy = NY, Abe = KY, I got as far as Jef and laughed as I scribbled Virginia. There is nothing wrong with solving a clue in two seconds. The only problem was it should have taken about half a second.
Tori made the semis and that is the goal in a QF match. In her spot and especially with the FJ category I would have wagered for the outright win since a potential drop to 17199 should not be beat by four other non-winners. Staying at 18000 at worst works as well with a chance that Leonard would not bet it all.
The easier thing to second guess would be the red zone calls by the 49ers late in the 4th quarter yesterday.

I don't remember the question anymore, but I remember that it mentioned "clarinet", so I *almost* unthinkingly shouted out "Who is Benny Goodman!" He's sometimes the correct Pavlovian response for that word.Golf wrote:Didn't watch the game, but I'm betting on.....skullturf wrote: I got it by noticing that they were asking for a composer who did his last something-or-other at the age of 35. Luckily, before shouting out Goodman, I figured that they were asking for someone from longer ago.

I thought of "yammer" also and it should have been accepted.
