I was slightly off on B.P.O.E. guessing British in trying to do some kind of petroleum oil exporter.

Couldn't remember the right number and ended up with 20-year plan.

TD 159 is about to close! Last chance to play!

I don't think I've ever had an equally bad week.

Mon-Vilnius
Tues- Right statue, wrong name
Wed-no guess
Thur-no guess
Fri-no guess (working on chiaroscuro)

Never heard of Unbroken or Vinegar Joe, fiery furnace wasn't coming to me, and said "Brotherhood" even though I know it is "Benevolent"

ouch.
I knew I was going to get at least one of the extras wrong- thanks, Mark, for adding a fourth this week, else I'd've been shut out on those.

3 for 9 overall though-

One instaget, four where I didn't even have a guess.

NHO the book or the vinegar guy.

I got "fiery furnace" from VeggieTales, and surprisingly got "benevolent" even though I couldn't remember what the P or O stood for.

I thought the Unbroken one was pretty easy, considering the author also wrote Seabiscuit.

The Daniel one was a breeze for me. One of the DDs in my first game was "name the book where three friends are cast into a [answer to the clue above]" and that was only a couple of months ago.

I instantly said "Cristo el Redentor" for Wednesday's game. That "el" is a deal-breaker, but I'm giving myself the benefit of the doubt that if I'd written it, I would have crossed out the "el" or translated it to English.

I had to be careful not to pluralize the fiery furnace and make it into a band (which I was introduced to at pretty much the same time as The Magnetic Fields, whom Jason mentioned in his interview).

I'll join you in the Hall of Shame for the week. I didn't even have a decent guess at any of the 5 FJ clues. I wrote down Vilnius, same as you, but pretty much knew that there was no chance of it being right. Nasty, nasty week for me. I haven't really been obliterated by any of the TOC boards thus far, getting at least 15/30 in nearly every round, but I tend to struggle on the clues in the lower two rows, such as those that MarkBarrett chose the 4 extras from this week, and the last 4 FJs have been focused on subjects that I am pretty much clueless on.

My pathetic geography chops kept me from going 5/5 on a ToC FJ week. Grr. Must needs do something about this. I should really pay more attention to the bestseller lists too, I have absolutely no excuse there. McCarthur stuck in my head and would neither die nor fade away, even though i knew full well his first name was Douglas. Too much MASH, I guess. ;)

My best week in ages - Seems to me the TOC's FJ's were easier than regular ones, and I still don't know how to get the smilies to post. I have asked before but no one has responded to my plea, not that it matters that much.

Either click the smilies to the right of the post box or just "type it" -- (colon+SHIFT-0) for :).

Also, make sure the "Disable Smilies" box below the post box is unchecked.

I was kind of tired when I watched Friday's J!--I had the feeling I should have gotten the Latin "hook", and I think I would have thought of penumbra/umbra on a better day. What I'm not sure is whether I would have gotten Umbria from that.

Knew they were looking for the Rio statue, just didn't come up with the official name before the clock ran out. Similarly, just couldn't pull up Hillenbrand in time.

Did anyone else think the Umbria clue was oddly worded? The 'local variation' language led me to thinking about something like the locals calling New Oreleans the big easy. I eventually got it , but the name of the place is Umbria local or no.

Not as good as last week, but not horrendous for a TOC, I suppose.

Now that feels a bit more like a ToC...especially the Semis.

Wedn - Not a chance.
Fri - Knew 'Umbra' but couldn't go any further with it. (Umbran Fields?...Well, whatever...)

I made the mistake of starting to read Thursday's game thread before I watched the show. I think I would have gotten FJ right from the numbers of years given in the clue, but since I'm not sure I didn't count it.

Unbroken was one of the best books I read in 2011.
