I know who both Ryan Gosling and Reynolds are, but can never come up with either of their names.

OTOH, I'm pretty sure I've never heard of the French Revolutionary Calendar. :?:

The one who ran for President. (But thanks for the heads up on Soule.)

I still don't know how I herped so much derp and still won at Jeopardy. TWICE so far.

Yeah FJ was reckless but look at it from this standpoint:

I was the 1991 Geography Bee runner-up.
I was BORN IN ASIA.

If I'd gotten that wrong, I deserved to go home.

And Kaya's a doll.

Me too.

I was not surprised they left CANADIAN CLUB to the end, and I fully expected to run it. However, I got only the last clue in the cat: Michael Buble, whom I mostly know because of his guest appearance on Corner Gas. I think I might have heard the name Ryan Gosling at some point, but I couldn't tell you a thing about him. Most of the others did not ring even the slightest bit of bell.

If I had 50 cents for every math question I got right, I'd have $6.30 by now.

Bublé I knew because Blake Shelton covered his "Home". Also, my mom's friend bought the album with Bublé's version of "Home" on it, and said it was the only song on it that he liked.

Bpmod, I take it you don't watch How I Met Your Mother?

(And still no Red Green Show clues.)

Actually, I forgotten getting that one right. But, no, I have never watched it. I have never felt any need or desire to. Everything I know about that show, I learned here on JBoard, and that was enough to get me the correct response.

Yes, BUT ... you never know when they're going to throw you a curveball. Or when your brain goes totally kablooey. Just sayin'.

Congratulations on your wins! But by your logic, a lot of contestants should be betting it all in FJ! when the category is "The United States", or "North America". Or "The Planet Earth". :)

AFTER I LOST THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION $1600: Having lost control of my newspaper as well as the vote, I died Nov. 29, 1872, before the electors even met

1872 guy with a newspaper who ran for President? In my mind it was a very very short list and the trash was waiting to be picked up. I would say the valuation was fair.
I focused on the 1872 election and figured that the guy who lost in 1876 might also have lost then, so I went with Tilden.

Most of us can name all the presidents, but how far back can we go with the losing candidates? I can take it back to Al Smith in 1928, before that it becomes the more famous ones (Bryan. etc)

I never said this rationale was logical. Note : geography is historically my strong suit (LearnedLeague backs this up) so there's that to consider.

I'm pretty sure my Jeopardy! run is a classic case of how NOT to win at Jeopardy! (but win anyway).

Brock beat me on the buzzer but negged -- I was ready to go with street, knowing that it's "Strasse" in German. Buzzer speed: MY BANE. ('Cause I actually kept buzzing too soon and locking myself out, stupid College Bowl instincts!)

I can get Reynolds. I've heard of Gosling, but if you showed me his picture, I'd have no clue who it was.

Dead on assessment of the table tennis clue. "Be more specific" should not have been allowed and was not, leading to the awkward edit.

You should definitely Google it, Kirk. Along with the Metric system, it was one of the ways that Revolutionary France tried to break with the illogical ways of the Ancien Regime. Unlike the Metric system, it never really took hold with the people and lives on today only as a historical curiosity.

You should have a look! It was brilliant. The names of the months share an ending depending on the season, and the clock was divided into 10 hours of 100 minutes of 100 seconds.

It was dropped after the Revolution (too confusing) but brought back by the Commune during the Franco-Prussian War nearly 80 years later.
