Re: TD 178: Countdown

The Washington Nationals and Seattle Mariners have never played in a World Series. Six other current major league teams have not lost a World Series game since November 1, 1986. Name one of these six teams.

Um, actually . . .

Where you see a "six" in this question, ignore that. Turns out there are seven, all of which were submitted by at least 3 players. So for Countdown purposes, we're going to pretend that this qiestos has only six answers, even though you all know differently.

And now I do, too.

Kansas City Royals (last loss Game 5, 1985. Probably should have been Game 6, but for a botched call at first base late.) (7):

Alyssa
Bamaman
econgator
geolawyerman
Leander
MarkBarrett
This is Kirk!

Milwaukee Brewers (last loss Game 6, 1982) (4):

Pittsburgh Pirates (last loss Game 5, 1979) (3):

Name one of the animals known by big game hunters as the "Big Five" most dangerous animals to hunt.

Every correct answer was given, and there was even a slight advantage to being wrong over being sheep-y here. Nicely played.

"Um, sure, I meant to do that."

Actually, the one that has surprised me most was the gymnastics question. I considered the vault, I considered the floor exercise, and finally decided that no one would say rings. Guess I'm lucky that I didn't turn into woolly roadkill until my third TD.

And now we move into the strategy portion of the game. The last two questions are ones where all of the answers are deducible. But the question is not which of the available answers to choose, but whether to choose one at all.

So . . .

One classic approximation of pi is 22/7. Name one of the four digits that will NEVER appear after the decimal place when converting this fraction to a decimal.

I learned three cool things about the number 7 when I was in 7th grade. One is that the repeating decimal is .142857. Another is that when dividing by 7, the remainder determines where the repeating decimal begins, which makes calculating batting averages in your head that much easier.

The third thing is that the sum of the digits after the decimal point will always be divisible by 3, even though no individual digit is a multiple of 3. Hence the correct answers to this question.

Zero (8):

Alyssa

ElendilPickle
ihavejeoprosy
Leander

Six (6):

Nine (2):

Name one of the three U. S. cities that meet the following three criteria: 1) Largest city in the state, 2) City name begins with a vowel, 3) NOT the state capital.

I don't think there's any doubt which answer Peyton Manning would pick . . .

In this game a player could drop as many times he or she liked. The penalty is that for each question dropped, the total* number of possible correct answers for each question dropped is multiplied together and added to the player's score at the end of the game.

*Unless I miscounted, in which case it is what I need it to be to make the game work.

Anyway, here are the drop scores for each player:

0 -- No drops

Aardvark
Alyssa
debramc
esrever
ihavejeoprosy
Joy
Lilac
Paucle
TomKBaltimoreBoy

3 -- Only dropped the last question.

dnbguy
econgator
goforthetie

4 -- Only dropped the next-to-last question

Kayanne
tjconn728

6 -- Only dropped the baseball question

ElendilPickle

7 -- Only dropped the Kwanzaa question

Creed Bratton
geolawyerman
Linear Gnome
Magna
nserven
This is Kirk!
Vanya

9 -- Only dropped the astronaut question

jpahk

12 -- Dropped the last 2

immaf

12 -- Dropped the full moon question

Bamaman
Leander
Woppy T

24 -- Dropped the number question and the baseball question

gamawire

28 -- Dropped Kwanzaa and the number

I don't know that I have ever seen a 5-way tie for any position in a TD game. Impressive.

I thought a lot more people would drop the last two. I considered it, but ended up with 9, so saved 3 points.

I was going to drop one of the last two, but not both. I got greedy, deciding not to, but in the end only lost a point. So no change in standings for me.

Great game, DoT! Well-written representation of the original concept.
