I guess people don't learn their nursery rhymes anymore - I ran that category (although "light of the moon" and "Robin Redbreast" were "What else could it be?" guesses rather than based on firm knowledge).

FJ was an Instaget.

I went back and re-looked at that image, and I still don't see a camera. I see a blurry, microscopic little thing that MIGHT possibly be a tripod. Or a surveyor's tripod thingie. Or three really really big toothpicks.
Cameras were not all the size of a pack of cigarettes back in the day.

I know cameras were bigger back then, but re-examining the image failed to clearly spell out "old-school tripod camera" to me, in part because I could barely even see the object in question to begin with.

Welcome Cambell, and good going on your two games so far.
Also proved you're a generous player by offering a tie in tonight's game.

Too bad Maire didn't wager like Nick in FJ. We could've been playing for a three way tie tonight.

{Edited to change the contestant names to go with this date. I got them mixed up with Monday's game.}

I knew FJ wasn't Spain, because Juan Carlos just abdicated, but I wasn't sure if Beatrix abdicated or not. I decided to go with the Netherlands right before the answers were revealed.
The other clue that it wasn't Spain is that Spain was ruled by a dictator (Franco) from the 1930's until Juan Carlos assumed the throne upon Franco's death. So there were no prior abdications.

I ran the Mammal category and always love those 11+ letter categories. For FJ I figured it had to be a European country that was a constitutional monarchy but not knowing too much about European royalty I just blindly guessed Denmark.

Campbell: Thanks for sharing the quote from Ghostbuters as my guess was the same as skull's in thinking William Atherton's character was missing something.

********

Gaol/Wilde has at least a dozen archive hits, so that one going TS would have cost me a side bet. OKC and the two definitions of "low" I can see escaping the contestants.

Nick works in a bar. If I knew nothing about him and heard him speak a sentence I would have guessed restaurant, bar or casino.

Constitutional Monarchies had me expecting Thailand or northern Europe. I had enough information to eliminate Spain and I wrote The Netherlands. I could not have named Wilhelmina, Juliana, Beatrix in order. I could not have named Willem-Alexander. Fortunately, what little I did know was enough tonight to insure no skunk for the week.

That would have been cool if the show had to pay out $46,400 instead of $15,200. Not to be.

Is Campbell the first multi-game male winner since Arthur Chu?

I had to catch myself on that one, at first I thought it was a surveyor's tool, then by the end of the clue it said 'surveying' and by the time I thought of a camera the clue was over. (And why would they bother photographing the official photographer?!)

Final went with Morocco; of the countries I could list it was the one I precalled so I felt it deserved the honor. Netherlands wouldn't have come to me in any reasonable length of time.

(Hmm, only 2 pages in. Guess this wasn't an eventful game! )
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

That's exactly the one I was thinking of.

I said "back" for spine and counted it wrong, though I think Alex would've at least given me a BMS.

On Final, I said Iran, thinking maybe the Shah counted as royalty. I did find it ironic that this FJ occurred the same day the Netherlands was in the World Cup semi's (as one person already alluded to.) Of course, I think the producers could look into their crystal ball and know that would be the case. Just surprised they didn't instead go with something relating to the Perons.

It might be time to upgrade from your 1950 Philco.

3/3 in Finals to start the week! Wasn't 100% sure of this one, but I got it within 10 seconds or so.

Apparently I didn't read enough nursery rhymes as a kid - went 1/5 there. Ran Nonfiction, did pretty well otherwise.

Lach trash: Oscar Wilde, pangolin, odometer, Oklahoma City, Navajo, calico cat.

Anyone else do well in the mammal category through process of elimination? Hadn't heard of most of those mammals, but I could ID a lot of the wrong choices as NOT mammals.

Don't worry, TPH, I didn't get the photographer clue either.

Campbell, congrats on your wins, and thanks for stopping by. Hope you stick around.

I thought the Synonyms and Cat Rhyme Time categories were very tough, as I went 0-fer on those categories.
However, did get 4/5 on both the Nonfiction Books/Movies & Pop Culture College Courses Categories.
That FJ was incredibly difficult, I would've put Thailand.
Lach Trash: Odometer

Today was sort of an uneventful show.

Oh yes, and I'd be remiss if I didn't preen about my alma mater getting a mention on the show. Go Connecticut College Camels!

If that's true, it doesn't say much for the intelligence of this board. Narrow topic, frequent trivia blurb, and recent event all rolled into one.

Nick cost himself the win by guessing on the last clue in DJ. This assumes intelligent wagering though, and judging by his late DD wagering that's a poor assumption.

Sara Tess looked like she was just happy to be there, didn't care about result. Another spot gone forever.

But a solid second win from the champ. And yeah, it would be nice not to have to change clothes!

Belgium here – I had thought I'd heard of an abdication there last year, and it turns out I was right. Needed the other two years, though.

Spain was the first thing that came to mind, as I'm sure it was with several others here, before quickly getting tossed.

Campbell – congrats on your fine play, particularly on your wagering. ;) Looking forward to seeing you defend once again.

Not quite...my favorite is "Let's show this prehistoric [expletive deleted] how we do things downtown." Close second is "We came, we saw, we kicked its [other body part]!"
Congratulations on being the first male multi-day winner since Arthur Chu.

I just re-watched Ghostbusters for the fun of it. Can't believe it's been 30 years. The quote you should've used jumped out at me like a class 5 full roaming vapor: "You know, you don't act like a scientist.... You're more like a game show host." Oh well. Maybe next time. ;)

Stunned that Oscar Wilde was a miss, considering one of his most famous works is "The Ballad of Reading Gaol." And people overwhelming a state = Oklahoma land rush = Oklahoma City.
The writers love Oscar Wilde. The contestant coordinators almost never find anyone who has ever heard of him, or knows anything beyond 'Dorian Gray'("'Picture'...no, wait, 'Portrait'...), or the basic, 'He lived a long time ago, wrote witty stories and plays, and either was or wasn't gay, depending on what day of the week it was.' A few months back, someone actually got a non-Dorian Gray clue about Wilde correct, and hell did not freeze over,

I got Oscar Wilde right despite very much falling into the category that onairb described, heh.
