I wasn't even trying to be clever here! The way the clue was phrased made it seem like "procrastination" or "procrastinating" was a better response, but neither of those had the proper number of letters.RandyG wrote: PROCRASTINATE (#12) – 5 responses

Re: TD 213: The Cure For Triskaidekaphobia
I did give this some thought before the posting. If this were in a timed situation, such as on the show, then I would have been much more lenient and accepted your answer, but still I wouldn't have written the question as it stands if my intention was to generalize to pharmaceutics. (I'm 100% sure, though, that if this were an actual Jeopardy! question, your answer would not be accepted.) That you had time to ponder on an answer, consider that for the time and thought I gave to forming the question, I surely wouldn't have chosen those 3 companies unless there was something more specific about them.jjwaymee wrote:It's your game Randy. As always, I am appreciative of all of the time and effort you put into these games when you host. That being said -- you are really splitting hairs on this one.RandyG wrote: Incorrect answers -- 20 points
PHARMACEUTICS ….. close, but not close enough. The 3 specific companies listed are way down on the list of the top 100 in the pharmaceutical field, but they are all in the top 5 when only considering biotechnology companies.
jjwaymee
Yes I did accept two other unexpected answers, but I'd consider those excellent fits to all aspects of the clue, not just close.

Re: TD 213: The Cure For Triskaidekaphobia
I considered the grammar/usage aspects. I think that "procrastination," "procrastinating," or "procrastinate" all work as written. If I had left out "DOING" from the clue, i.e. ".... ARE PRONE TO THIS," then I'd say that "procrastinate" would not work, while the others would.goforthetie wrote:I wasn't even trying to be clever here! I figured "procrastinate" was the answer there, but I, too, thought it sounded a little off with how the clue was worded. If it had said "prone to do this" it would sound better.RandyG wrote:I considered the grammar/usage aspects. I think that "procrastination," "procrastinating," or "procrastinate" all work as written. I decided it was better left for you to relate this. I think that OBTW comments made within the individual question reveals are not noticed nearly as much as separate posts.Tigershark wrote:Went for this response because it was nearly identical to a question I correctly answered when I was a contestant. Acceptable answer in place of "counterattack." Larsen was also well-known for using a somewhat uncommon bishop maneuver known as "fianchettoing" to the point of having chess openings that employed this tactic named for him.

It never hurts to PM the host if you think that something is a little off.... in fact, it's appreciated because it can usually help avoid after-the-fact situations like this. I tend to procrastinate when it comes to actually concentrating on answering a TD, so by the time I see something that I think is a bit off, it's too late in the quiz week to bring it up.

I was going between counterattack and countergambit (would you have accepted the latter? My first thoughts were zugzwang and zwischenzug, but obviously not enough letters.), but yeah, color me impressed with fianchettoing.RandyG wrote:COUNTERATTACK (#3) – Singleton!

Re: TD 213: The Cure For Triskaidekaphobia
Upon doing some cursory research I would probably rule against countergambit. While you would find an incidental connection between any chess grandmaster and just about any chess concept, there doesn't seem to be any particularly strong connection between Larsen and gambits (or countergambits.) Not even close to the way that Larsen is known for his tactical attacking/counterattacking and his use of fianchettoing.econgator wrote:I was going between counterattack and countergambit (would you have accepted the latter? Re: TD 213: The Cure For Triskaidekaphobia
Above: Doc Daneeka (Jack Gilford) explains to Yossarian (Alan Arkin) the meaning of Catch-22
(Starting at 1:13)
Yossarian: Is Orr crazy?
Doc Daneeka: Of course he is. He has to be crazy if he keeps flying after all the close calls he's had.
Yossarian: Then why can't you ground him?
Doc Daneeka: I can, but first he has to ask me.
Yossarian: That's all he's gotta do to be grounded?
Doc Daneeka: That's all.
Yossarian: And then you can ground him?
Doc Daneeka: No. Then I cannot ground him. There's a catch.
Yossarian: A catch?
Doc Daneeka: Sure, Catch-22. Anyone who wants to get out of combat isn't really crazy, so I can't ground him.
Yossarian: OK, let me see if I got this straight. In order to be grounded, I've got to be crazy and I must be crazy to keep flying. But if I ask to be grounded, that means I'm not crazy any more and I have to keep flying.
Doc Daneeka: You've got it! That's Catch-22.
12. Would you prefer less fear and more loathing or more fear and less loathing? Hunter S. Thompson’s 1971 counter-cultural, semi-biographical novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas naturally followed from literary traditions started years earlier by the Beat Generation authors of the 1950s and the psychedelics and social satirists of the 1960s. Name the author of one of the following books written between 1956 and 1968 that are all closely associated with those traditions. Include the letter choice with your answer.
(A) The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test
(B) One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
(C) Franny and Zooey
(D) On the Road
(E) Howl and Other Poems
(F) Naked Lunch
(G) A Clockwork Orange
(H) V.
(I) Catch-22
(J) Cat’s Cradle
(K) The Armies of the Night
(L) Hell's Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs
(M) Been Down So Long it Looks Like Up to Me
Ouch! The biggest sheep of the TD. And I'm guessing that most or all of the shepherds knew several of the other answers. On the other end, some nice singletons and doubletons.... and the author mentioned in the question goes untouched when it comes to another of his books from the era.
This was the only multiple-option question where I asked for the letter/book matching to the answer you provided. I don't generally ask for a matching letter in these type of questions -- it can make for additional, unecessary work for both the host and the players -- but here it seemed too likely that if you randomly chose a well-known 1950s-60s author you would match one of the books without demonstrating any detailed knowledge of the subject.

For the record, I think I was thinking of Ed Saunders (or Sanders), who I think wrote "the Family" about the Mansons, and used to appear on talk shows to talk about hippie subjects. I was not at all sure he wrote the Hell's Angels book, but I just felt like taking a chance because every other answer (except the other one I didn't know) seemed too likely to bleat.
I'm smart and I want respect.

Re: TD 213: The Cure For Triskaidekaphobia
Well this is what my dog thinks of Joseph Heller sheeping:
Also, on the musical question as my performance on the last TD shows, I am obviously no expert in musical theater. But I was confident on "Comedy Tonight" being from Camelot, despite never having seen the show or the movie because my mom used to play the soundtrack on family road trips. I thought that "Comedy Tonight" was a song about how the singer knew that the next day was going to be awful, so they'd have to enjoy the comedy show that evening because they wouldn't be laughing again for a while. Is there an other song that vaguely fits this description, or am I completely making this up somehow?

If we're going for the vagueliest of the vaguely, maybe "Before I Gaze At You Again", although it has nothing to do with a comedy show, nor is there one in Camelot.tjconn728 wrote:Is there an other song that vaguely fits this description, or am I completely making this up somehow?
So, yeah, you're making it up.

You may have also been conflating a bit with "I Wonder What the King is Doing Tonight", which is the first vocal number in Camelot just as "Comedy Tonight" is the first vocal number in Forum.tjconn728 wrote:Ok, that's what I figured.
