Frederick had stage presence. I would have guessed that he's had acting experience, even if it hadn't been mentioned on the show. It was a gutsy move for him to bet all of his money on that DJ, and it's too bad he didn't know the right response. (I thought Bacon's Rebellion was rather obscure.) Alexander had a great game. I got 37 clues correct including Darius Rucker, Romania, Gentleman Jim, and FJ.

I liked Frederick too. Since he was so happy just being there, i didn't expect TDD. also thought the 1 min warnings came too soon.
P.S. hometown howdies for this week has a spoiler. Again.

The title of the novel that Hugo wrote is Notre-Dame de Paris. I don't understand why translators need to change the meaning of a title when translating a work to another language.gamawire wrote:Well, technically, "The Hunchback" is the character and in the title. But I agree with you that it was odd.bpmod wrote:That was a very odd FJ clue. I did get it, but only because I knew guessed that that's what their intended response was. There is no title character (except maybe a building) of Victor Hugo's novel.

I don't follow country music (or even pop music) - I'm not going to say my mind is closed to other music like TPH, as I pick up stuff by paying attention to the world around me, but I will honestly say I've never heard The Band Perry come up.TenPoundHammer wrote: $200: "The Band this": The Band Perry is the only act I know whose name follows that naming pattern, and they're the most famous sibling group right now
That one I got. My ex was a huge country fan, and when we were together I got a few Garth Brooks CDs from her as birthday gifts. I still listen to them 20 years later and like them, and Friends in Low Places is also on my iPod's country mix.TenPoundHammer wrote:$400: "Friends in Low Places" was a huge huge hit, and arguably Garth's most famous song, and I assume everyone knows who Garth is
Ah, that one went right over my head, I didn't focus on that part of the clue (and even if I did, it probably would have taken me longer than needed to clue that in).TenPoundHammer wrote:$600: Female singer famous in the 70s, Dolly Parton is a good bet
TenPoundHammer wrote:$800: Darius was lead of a famous 90's band.
Hootie and the Blowfish (I'm pretty sure). It was mentioned in the clue.
I think that's the path they wanted you to go down, hence the TOM. I know of Hootie, and this was a tip-of-the tongue for me.TenPoundHammer wrote:You can get this one if you know your rock acts of the 90's,
Who's the first, Charley Pride?TenPoundHammer wrote:or if you know that Darius is the second most famous African American in country music
Now this seems like an "either you know it or you don't", one of those clues where we explain to you that, say, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon work together a lot and you stare back blankly because you didn't know this at all. Now you know how it feels for us. I don't really see any way of knowing that outside knowing it.TenPoundHammer wrote:$1,000: Kelly and Reba have worked together a lot. I think Kelly's marriage got some publicity.

I thought this one was a tad undervalued at $200. It might've been a better clue in 2011ish, back when "If I Die Young" was a monstrous crossover that even pop radio was spinning heavily.dhkendall wrote:I don't follow country music (or even pop music) - I'm not going to say my mind is closed to other music like TPH, as I pick up stuff by paying attention to the world around me, but I will honestly say I've never heard The Band Perry come up.TenPoundHammer wrote: $200: "The Band this": The Band Perry is the only act I know whose name follows that naming pattern, and they're the most famous sibling group right now
I actually own a copy of Hootie & the Blowfish's Cracked Rear View (who doesn't?) and I enjoy both "Only Wanna Be with You" and "Let Her Cry".dhkendall wrote:TenPoundHammer wrote:$800: Darius was lead of a famous 90's band.

Also, I've joked that Darius started his country career simply because he wanted people to stop calling him "Hootie".
Eeyup. Third would be... um... I dunno... Cowboy Troy?dhkendall wrote:Who's the first, Charley Pride?TenPoundHammer wrote:or if you know that Darius is the second most famous African American in country music
Yeah, I'll grant that on this one too. A TOM such as "redhead" or maybe one of her more famous song titles might've helped. (Or hindered, since two of her most famous songs — "Fancy" and "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" — are covers. )dhkendall wrote:Now this seems like an "either you know it or you don't", one of those clues where we explain to you that, say, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon work together a lot and you stare back blankly because you didn't know this at all. Not that it mattered to the outcome, but "Harlequin" (what the contestant said) and "Harley Quinn" are not the same character. I'm surprised they let it slide.

The category was "Contranyms." You don't "counsel" if you "ask for professional advice," but you do "consult."gamawire wrote: Regarding the retronyms category, I said counsel instead of consult. Judges?
And one more thing - the "ence" category, I thought I heard the champ say omniscient rather than omniscience. Did I hear him incorrectly, or did they not catch it?

Tonight's FJ was an Insta-wrong for me... for some reason, thought of Fagin from "Oliver Twist."
Guess that's why they call it a game show.

Odd that 2 out of the last 3 FJs are French novels with arguably mistranslated English titles. For this one, I assume because of the wording of the clue that the original French title wouldn't be accepted.

I've deleted my PVR recording, but I thought I heard a judge say "no" in the background as Alex was saying it was correct. I'm surprised they let it through as well.teapot37 wrote:Noticed that too. I liked Frederick. Between his snazzy blue suit and his white-tooth smile, and his sharp delivery, he could practically host his own game show.

Re: Monday, October 20, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I had no idea about Reba being Clarkson's mother-in-law. I did not click my pen, but had it been a DD, I'd have guessed Reba.
For FJ, it came pretty quickly as he was the only title character I could think of that could be described as disabled. I've never read the book, so I really don't know what all was wrong with him. But someone with a hunchback would certainly be described as lame (especially in the less PC 19th century) and being a bell ringer seems like a job that would cause hearing problems.
I'm sure Emma just wrote down something to avoid leaving it blank, but a deaf and lame whale sounds interesting.

Of course not. It has not been used on the show since June.TenPoundHammer wrote:
Can't say I've heard of the Boston Massacre.
Last night the "Treehouse of Horror" had it snow in hell when Lisa Simpson was popular. I had my own snow in hell moment when I ran Country Music. I'll admit to thinking, "I wonder if Hammer missed the Reba one since it was not a song/artist one and had an American Idol twist to it?" Good job getting all five.
************
The game did not go well for Frederick and Emma with each missing big buck Daily Doubles in the DJ! round. One smiled throughout, had a good time, and will still leave with good memories of the experience. The other probably had bigger goals than one show and $1K.
David: I also expected a different voice from Frederick. My reaction was, "Oh, a theater actor and not film/TV." Yes, I would think one time at an audition telling the Piggly Wiggly story would be a golden ticket to Culver City. Could that have been you tonight eating up a map category while staring at Jim Corbett?
***********
Another LITERATURE FJ! clue so soon? I'll gladly take it over negative categories. No way was I going to change, but I did think about Frankenstein and Mr. Hyde.

Do we assume that they would have accepted Quasimodo as an acceptable answer, despite the phrasing of the clue? By the time I guessed it, it would have been all I'd have had time to write!
Liked both Emma and Frederick -- always good to see some lively contestants!
