Yes, because if you haven't heard of it, it must be contrived. Even though you freely admit that you're not expected to get a lot of stuff because you haven't heard of it.

Ever consider a career in politics? :)
TenPoundHammer wrote:Dam Nation was completetly lacking in TOM.
If you haven't/refused to learn a lot of stuff, yes it was.

Otherwise:

Ataturk was a famous founder of Turkey. If you don't know that, the word "Turk" is in the dam's (and political figure's) name.

Aswan High Dam - famous in Egypt, mentioned a few times on the show.

Three Gorges Dam - also a famous dam in China, creates one of the largest hydroelectric generations in the world, if not the largest. Comes up on the news from time to times s well as Jeopardy! I suggest watching that show if you want to get better. And if things aren't sticking, then maybe you "Aren't Jeopardy! Material" and realize the show is written for those who are.

Also, one of those dam clues mentioned "Pahlavi", a dynastic family from Iran. You know, like the shah.

I had never heard of that dam or the one in Turkey but both were easy gets.

Agree 100%. To me it was all TOM other than Three Gorges. That was the only one that required any dam knowledge (pun intended)!

I hesitated over that one because I thought, Wouldn't Iran have changed that name to Revolutionary Council of Death to America Dam, or something like that?... ;)
But not for long...

I googled the name and found that the dam thing goes by several names, only one of which contains "Pahlavi."

I've read this, and I'm sure compared to the side-splitting humor of Dave Barry, it would put TPH right to sleep. Garrison Keillor makes fewer hilarious capitalized references to THE HAWLEY-SMOOT TARIFF.

$600 - "Important horse race" = Kentucky Derby most of the time.
TenPoundHammer wrote:Ostrich is a person who refuses to face uncertain truths? That and not knowing what continent ostriches are native to threw me for a total loop.
There's a common misconception that ostriches bury their heads in the sand when something frightens them.
TenPoundHammer wrote:WLT chess at $400?
Knights and (counter)gambits are fairly basic chess terminology.

By coincidence he came up again in a 1000-pt. clue in Sports J! today.

There are at least two ways to get to Oslo: 1) The simple fact that Oslo used to be named Christiania or 2) Ibsen was Norwegian and Oslo is the capital of Norway.

Kentucky is known for its bourbon, which is (generally) made from corn, and there are such things as Kentucky colonels, of which a certain Harland Sanders (founder and spokesperson of Kentucky Fried Chicken) is the most iconic example.

Bunker Hill = Boston

Those both seem obscure for $200.

Well, your definition of obscurity is why there's an Education Thread for you.

Not to cause further confusion, but bourbon, by law, is required to be made of at least 51% corn to be considered bourbon. Anything less would just be whiskey.

Good to know. Thanks!

The clue asked for a female figure who gives an address every Christmas. David Beckham is British, so the woman in question is probably also British. The most notable living British woman is Queen Elizabeth II.

There don't appear to be any.
There is probably a big difference between the kind of waterfalls that that site centers on and rapids or cataracts. But I have thus far been too lazy to look at it. Did you check the reference I used?

Edit: OK I checked it. The page lists exactly two of the over 150 waterfalls located in the city of Hamilton. Not a great resource for finding rapids or cataracts.

Ah, it says the "rapids" of the St. Mary's River bestowed the name. But rapids ≠ falls.

The clip of Bowie and Crosby singing that duet is pretty well known. I think it was perfectly fair for a $600 clue.

I see what you did there.

And I totally back up what Kirk said above.

What does WLT stand for? I haven't been on jboard in about 5 years and don't recall that acronym before.
