J! circles of death

Post by FireAntsDefense »

FakeJohnHancock defeated me (http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=4253),

ArthurChu defeated FakeJohnHancock (http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=4728),

and I got past ArthurChu (http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=4730).

Any other such circles of death?

Circles of death are probably almost as numerous as there are ToC returners, so the trick is to find short ones. As an example of a medium length one,

Vijay Balse > Andy Srinivasan > Regina Robbins > six small-time champs (including me) > Vijay Balse (all in S26).

Only triple losses and other anomalies disrupt circles between ToCs, but special tournaments create interesting new possibilities.

ETA: maybe a better name for what Ben seems to be looking for--the rare 3-player circles--would be "death triangles"... like love triangles, only deadlier.

Pretty sure any TOC Champion who was not the last tournament qualifier from their "season" will be part of a circle of death of some size, e.g., in regular season, future TOC champion (Player A) is at some point defeated by Player B, who is then defeated by Player C, etc. If Player R, for example, ends up being a TOC contestant and is defeated by Player A, or by another TOCer who is ultimately defeated by Player A, the circle is closed.

But it does sound like the original question was looking for death triangles.

There are two-person ones that involve a winner and a wild card from the same QF making it to the finals, with the wild card winning the tournament. Brian Wangsgard and Tom Cubbage are one, and David Siegel and Ryan "Fritz" Holznagel are another (are there more?). But Paul Nelson and Keith Whitener are the only two who have squared off in a regular game and a tournament game and each gotten a victory against the other.

If Cora Peck had bet it all in her ToC QF, she would have defeated Dan Pawson, who defeated the person who defeated her in regular play.

In the 1996 TOC Michael Daunt won the QF game with Bob Scarpone the WC. In the finals Daunt was 3rd and Scarpone was 2nd.

The original one was also made up solely of boardies, those must be rarer.

Me, I'm waiting for Frank Selevan or Lois Feinstein to come back on the show to make an incredibly large circle.

Jerome Vered beat Bruce Simmons in the quarterfinals of the 1992 ToC. They both made the finals, and Bruce finished 2nd and Jerome finished 3rd.

Not quite what the question asked but I like the relationship Larissa Kelly > Aaron Schroeder > Arianna Kelly (Larissa's sister)

Larissa got 2nd, Aaron 3rd in the TOC finals

Has there ever been a chain of three straight TOC players in a regular play?

Yes. Calendar year 1997, twice if I'm looking at the archive correctly.

I heard somewhere that there was a chain of three consecutive 5xers in Season 3(?) that went on to the ToC. Would that count as well?

Wes Ulm: June 4-10
Arthur Phillips: June 10-16
Dan Melia: July 18-September 4
Fred Ramen: September 5-11

The 1997 chain would not count, at least as I was asking the question. The first player did not lose to the second, though #2 did lose to #3. Player #2 beat the person who beat #1.

Jesus.

Even I had forgotten that.
