Alex: Val Hannon is from Texas. She's writing a book, and she made a promise that if she got to be a contestant on this program, you would do what?
Val: I would name a character after you--Alex Trebek.
Alex: Uh-huh. And have you done that?
Val: Yes. The the protagonists' sister is named Alexandra because her parents were huge Jeopardy! fans.
[Laughter]
Alex: So I get to be a girl?
Val: Yes.
Alex: Again?
Val: Again.
Alex: Oh, boy. Well, thank you for the honor.
Val: Oh, you're welcome.
Alex: Is it--is Alexandra a good person?
Val: Oh, yes.
Alex: Okay. Protagonist, not antagonist.
Alex: Alan Hait is from Wilton Manors, Florida. Once met Elizabeth Taylor in an unusual manner.
Alan: It was a very close encounter. I physically collided with Elizabeth Taylor at Heathrow Airport while making a very tight connection for a plane.
Alex: Was she trying to make a tight connection, also?
Alan: I think she was... [Laughs] ...she was getting interviewed by the press, and I zigged, and she zagged and [Claps] there we went.
Alex: Well, what was her reaction afterward?
Alan: She could not have been nicer.
Alex: Good.
Alan: She said, "Let this young man through." And her eyes really are--were violet. She was a very gracious lady.
Alex: Good. I'm glad to hear that.
Alex: Elliot Yates is our champion. What's this about a train and a money issue helped earn you some bucks?
Elliot: Well, I was in Paris a few summers ago, and I pretend that I can speak French because I studied French. So, I had a ticket, and I showed up, and it wouldn't print--I missed the train. Missed it and I could not get a refund 'cause I still don't speak French. So I had to pay another hundred-plus euros to go down to Nice. And on the train, I said, "The only way that I'll be able to make up for this is if I go to those casinos down in Nice and Monaco and win that money back." And you know what? I did.
[Laughter]
Elliot: I won every cent back.

Re: Tuesday, January 6, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
This game shows how hitting the Daily Doubles can make or break you. If Alan hits them, he could have won the game rather than being locked out. Good job by Elliot hunting and finding the last one.
It took me a bit on FJ, but did not have to do any deep thinking, the only Asian desert that came to mind.
A fairly well played game, a bit surprised neither board was finished.

Thanks for that hour-long explanation about why you needed "star anise", Alex. Without that, we could have a) not had a runaway and b) had three people in FJ.

He babbled about something late in the first round that kept at least one of the final two clues hidden.grindcore wrote:Thanks for that hour-long explanation about why you needed "star anise", Alex. Without that, we could have a) not had a runaway and b) had three people in FJ.
Re: Tuesday, January 6, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Good God, did Val ever even manage to ring in once?!
What led to "cream of mushroom" on Food and Religion?
Birdie in J! and Vowel-Consonant-Vowel were easy runs for me. (Surf's Up > Happy Feet, by the way.) Also ran Spice in DJ!
Surprised myself with only 2/5 in Instruments. Couldn't get castanets or bamboo, and thought trumpet was too easy.
On the other hand, I felt "samosa" was undervalued at $400.
Had Best Sellers down as an 0/5 as soon as it came up. No amount of pausing was getting me any of those. Wales at $400? Really?
Lach Trash: symmetrical, cinnamon, nightshade, star anise.
Waterless place = desert = uhhhhhhh.............. Stop doing that, brain.

Val looked VERY nervous. When the cameras zoomed in on her after her first response you could see her hand was noticeably shaking. I felt sorry for her. It looked like she knew a lot of answers (or at least was willing to buzz in) but couldn't get her timing right.

This would've been an easy FJ no matter what, but that bit about 'waterless place' was just silly. Might as well have shown it on a map and said "this place".

Congratulations to Elliot on his third win. I got 34 clues correct including nightshade, star anise, and FJ.

I got Road Runner, but for those curious about Mel Blanc like I was: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Julian_(artist)

THe score was $9200 Alan to $20000 Elliott when the last clue of DJ! was about to be picked. Alex gave the LTAM warning. Elliott picked the one remaining $400 clue. Alan got it. Any other clue picked at that point gotten by ALan would have been a non-lock game, and the $800 clue picked and gotten by ALan would have been the first lock tie games under the revised rules.Bamaman wrote:This game shows how hitting the Daily Doubles can make or break you. Thought of Tibet first, thinking the Gobi was too far from the Himalayas to be in their rain shadow, switched to an actual desert instead.

Nope, they're fundamentally different things.ACW wrote:Judges: Age instead of era acceptable?

I liked that episode though. Elliot looks much stronger as a Jeopardy player than he did yesterday, and he's better with taking TSs instead of making risky guesses. You could tell he really wanted to go for that trumpet clue.
Val...made me worried I was about to witness a seizure on television for a bit.

I thought of trumpet, but it seemed way too mainstream compared with the others in the category.

No kidding. I almost threw out "piccolo trumpet" since I know they're higher pitched than regular trumpets, but that might've been too much.Bamaman wrote:I thought of trumpet, but it seemed way too mainstream compared with the others in the category.

I'm liking Elliot as a champ. I hope he wins tomorrow to get into ToC consideration.
Val, on the other hand, looked very nervous and couldn't get a rhythm going. Tough to see, but it happens.
Alan seemed more comfortable with the upper level clues, and unfortunately for him, it lead to his defeat. Elliot must have picked up on this and went to work looking for Daily Doubles.
I greatly overthought FJ and ended up with Tibet.
