I was a little confused by the wording of FJ and wasn't sure if they were going for the invention or something else. I hate long, wordy FJs. Finally, I figured out where they were going and was stuck between horses and oxen. I decided to go with horses and then I said "So that's where the term horsepower comes from".

Another well played game by the champ who continues to be delightful.

Basically, if it mentions Catton, it's about the Civil War.

I'm rereading Catton's "Mr Lincoln's Army" right now and I guessed Andrew Jackson. D'oh!

If FJ ended up being a triple stumper tonight I would have been flabbergasted. Did the other two just over think it?

Hey, that's a goodern! I should dust my copy off and peer inside it again...

I precalled "Men" instead of "Horses" as an incorrect response, and the wife shrieked when she saw it come up, lol, I was all like, "DOH! I toldja someone would take that bait!"
TBVH it just doesn't click sometimes. I could easily see someone going for 'manpower' when confronted with a clue about work. Easy neg. And the young lady responding with "steam engine" was on the right track, but got flustered and didn't respond to the clue, even not knowing Savery, 'horses' can be inferred by clue pointing to work and 'power.' 30s is a short time to get it!

Coryat: $33,200
43 R/2 W (Auggh! Second ep in a row where I failed to stay clam on the final clue of the game.)
DD: 2/3
FJ:
LT: 1,000 (DD), accomplice, John Hinckley (DD)

I can't believe I blanked on the Gang of Four with that giveaway TOM and I'm embarrassed that Voltaire isn't Pavlovian yet, but a good game nonetheless.

Jim missed out on what would have been an all-time great Alex-contestant exchange:

J: Who is Perry?
A: Be more specific.
J: Refrigerator?

I'm putting that down to Alex's introductory comments, where he took the simple truth that 'The champion won a lot of money yesterday', and expanded it into an address that lasted longer than one of his Colonial Penn ads. Yes, Alex, we know, Alex, shut up and start the game, Alex.

Karen has a lot of joy in her, it's nice to see someone so in the moment.

Shocked that FJ wasn't a triple get.

I think Cate figured out a $9,601 wager from Karen, tried to bet so she could win on a TS, and added the dollar to her wager instead of subtracting one. Karen, of course, made that moot by getting FJ right, and anyway, she covered by more than a dollar. But for a moment before her response was revealed, I thought we might be on our way to the first regular-game tiebreaker.

FJ scared me at first. I thought it was a question of what the quoted person invented, and what it was meant to replace, and knowing the invention was the foot in the door to solving the clue. But "slaves" and "horses" were the only things that came to my mind in the absence of knowing what the invention was, and I realized that "horsepower" was the only connection necessary.

That's exactly what I said answering at home, since I assume the other Perry isn't nicknamed Refrigerator.

I fast-forward through all the intro stuff, so I didn't notice the apparent longwindedness there, but I did notice that they took the first break after only getting through 13 clues instead of the normal 15.

I cannot find any reference to whatever this SI term might be. Could you elaborate?

Oh. OK. But 'watt' isn't an SI term.

Just because it's not an SI base unit doesn't mean it's not an SI unit.
