Circe on Monday. Tuesday the first thing that occurred to me was Yorba Linda, which I knew was Nixon, but I didn't know what to change it to--somehow I never became aware that Hoover<->Stanford. Thursday I should have had Whitman but didn't get there.

THBenton is embarrassing because I live about an hour's drive from there and I knew it was in my brain somewhere, but I couldn't retrieve it fast enough. Forgot the category on the Seabiscuit question and guessed something suboptimal.

Another sub-par week (though I know I would have won some games!).
L of G rang no bells, and "hackling" sounded British to my ear - but still the long period of composition should have given me a clue...
Went blank on Grant Wood [edit: and Thomas Hart Benton too!] (and Seabiscuit, and the ABBA catalog) and took a stab with menus for phillumenist.

Worst week ever for me. I did know that group was Abba but I was thinking Waterloo. Yesterday I thinking "filigree" which was ridiculous.

Calypso, New Deal ("say something" guess), "Mamma Mia," baroque
Brain froze on the Seabiscuit clue, couldn't come up with either.

Wednesday I worked the TOM up to ABBA, but then everything I know about ABBA: They're Swedish, and Mamma Mia! is based on their music. Saddest part is I've seen Mamma Mia!, but couldn't remember any of the songs.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

Mon: Medusa
Tue: Palm Springs
Fri: baroque (wife said flamboyant)

Weird thing to note: both of my wrong answers on Monday & Tuesday had the same first three letters as the correct answer.

I will admit it outright: my first oh-fer in I don't remember when.

Circe, Seabiscuit, wrong ABBA song.
Poo-tee-weet? So it goes.

Circe on Monday
Knew it was Abba on Wednesday, couldn't come up with the song
Facepalm on Thursday when I saw the answer. I thought "hackled" sounded archaic and I immediately went off thinking of earlier English poets, ending up with Milton and Paradise Lost.

"Waterloo" would have made more sense to play at a wedding, but I knew the song came out a couple of years earlier based on its success at the Eurovision competition in 1974. Given 1977, I reluctantly went with "Dancing Queen."

I WAG'd "Minnie the Moocher":

"She had a dream about the King of Sweden.
He gave her things that she was needin'."
