There are other ways to hang shelves, such as the cantilever system used for retail gondola shelves--metal teeth built into the rear of the shelf sit atop holes in the metal uprights of the gondola--or sitting atop dowels that plug into the inside walls of the unit. It's more that a lot of IKEA's famously "some assembly required" furniture has shelves, and many of those shelves are held by brackets.econgator wrote:As opposed to ....?TenPoundHammer wrote:Shelves use brackets?!?BigDaddyMatty wrote:IKEA sells tons of shelving units of various kinds. Oh, I did get to see Monday's Jeopardy! episode. When I got home, a note was left a my front door that the 12 hour blackout had been put off until Tuesday. *Sigh*
Also in the mail was a notice for a planned 9-hour outage the following Wednesday. *Double Sigh*

The contestants really ran up their tote boards, but I have to say the mix of questions in the J! round really sucked. That basketball theme didn't acquit itself well. The food category? Ugh. I think I would've like the 16-letter words category best, but we barely got into it before time was called.
I'm sorry to see Rachael go, and I will predict that Jen will be a one-day champ.

It would have sucked for Jen if Mike had gotten FJ right and she lost because she did not bet enough, even though she did bet to cover third place.

The male contestant's last name was Ewing and Patrick Ewing came up in the NCAA category. Word related to wizardry or sorcery?)

That's the distinction between the Ian Fleming Bond and the movie Bonds. In the books, he's a darker, less glamorous person than the typical movie portrayal. Connery came the closest (though I haven't seen the latest one) but even he played it too jaunty and not dangerous enough.seaborgium wrote:I thought the quote sounded noir-ish, so I guessed Sam Spade. I even thought of James Bond, but it seemed too gritty for him, and he didn't strike me as the sort to be in a casino at 3 am. The Casino Royale link went right over my head until Alex said 1953.

And the "somewhere else" is more often a written source than a spoken one. That may have thrown some people off. I associate "sic" more with misspellings than anything else. E.g. I think those are both decent guesses, though of course you chose wisely in sticking with Bond. I was able to reject them because I've read all the Philip Marlowe novels and the Sam Spade one more than once. So I stuck with the original instaguess of Bond. James Bond. Anyway, that response just seemed to fit so well that considering other possibilities was nothing but due diligence while waiting for the music to stop.skullturf wrote:My second choice would have been some detective along the lines of Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe, but I'm glad I decided to focus on the word "casino".

Re: Monday, March 9, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
From what I've read, Connery had the right look. Wikipedia says that two of Fleming's Bond books describe 007 as resembling Hoagy Carmichael, the American singer/composer.Woof wrote:That's the distinction between the Ian Fleming Bond and the movie Bonds. In the books, he's a darker, less glamorous person than the typical movie portrayal. Connery came the closest (though I haven't seen the latest one) but even he played it too jaunty and not dangerous enough.
A character in Moonraker describes him as "certainly good-looking ... Rather like Hoagy Carmichael in a way. That black hair falling down over the right eyebrow. Much the same bones. But there was something a bit cruel in the mouth, and the eyes were cold." I couldn't find any pictures of Carmichael with hair falling down. It's always slicked back. But he's definitely got the cruel mouth and cold eyes... at least when you're told to look for them. Otherwise, he just seems sympathetic.
Anyway, I'd say Connery had the right look for that. Fleming, apparently, disagreed. Connery wasn't what he'd envisioned. Wiki says part of the reason was that Fleming didn't think Connery was refined enough. So director Terence Young spent some time introducing Connery to high society, getting him the right clothes, teaching him how not to behave like an oaf, that sort of thing. Connery's eventual performance in Dr. No won Fleming over. Fleming went on in a later book to invent a half-Scottish heritage for Bond.

Usually, but not always.
