TD 238: College Fight and Victory Songs

Post by jeopfansincebirth »

Welcome to my first Think Different, TD 238! Let’s all reminisce about our days in college this week.

First and foremost, here are the rules:

1. Unlike most Think Differents, the object of this game is to score the most points among all entrants.
2. PM me (do not post in this thread!) all of your answers.
3. For each correct answer, you will receive the number of points equal to the number of people who gave that answer.
4. The SHEEP answer is the least popular answer given by players. It may be incorrect! DROPs and CUT CLASSes (see below) do not count, though.
5. For each incorrect answer, you will receive the number of negative points equal to that answer (the SHEEP) -5.
6. In your answer submissions, I want the full or common name of the school; no initials. If initials are given, you will receive the SHEEP score -10.
7. You are allowed to DROP one question. You will receive 0 points for that question.
8. You are allowed to CUT CLASS on one question. You will receive the SHEEP score for that answer.
9. You are forbidden from actively performing any outside research. If you happen to stumble upon a correct answer passively, then consider yourself lucky.
10. You are allowed to resubmit your answers as many times as you like before the deadline, provided that you have not researched any answers (see rule 8).
11. Ties will be broken by submission order. If you have submitted more than once, your most recent submission will be used.
12. If you have any questions/clarifications, please feel free to PM me.

Answers must be submitted by 08:00 PM EDT on Monday, April 6, 2015. Good luck!

* Questions denoted with this mark denote that there is a hint to assist in getting to the correct answer.

Have to ask. Do we need to post the letter that corresponds with our answer?

Am I reading correctly that we are trying to get the most popular answer on each question?

It is the host's game, but the scoring system seems to reward those with little knowledge of the songs. There are one or two that are blatantly obvious for each question. Others require more in depth thinking to puzzle out along with knowing what schools are in each league. But the scoring system makes it a waste of time to bother listing out the schools and match them together.

Also, a deadline of Monday is pretty short for one of these games. Many people don't check the boards on weekends and may not see the game until it is too late.

So...an incorrect answer is worth the Sheep score minus 5...but the Sheep may be an incorrect answer. Hmmmm. This seems troublesome. I would hate for this game to fall into an endless loop from which it may not recover.

Perhaps we should not let people who have no idea how a TD works (in part because they have not participated in many (any?)) into the TD hosting queue.

There's been a couple like that and they've just died on the table from utter lack of participation and several comments like this that the TD isn't ready for prime time. "Let the market sort it out" as it were

Maybe I'm an old fogey but one of the reasons I haven't participated lately is that TDs aren't what I remember them to be and are quite different now. (No pun intended).

This isn't a TD, it's a Match Game (at least as the board identifies it). It can't be a Think Differently if the victory is awarded for thinking similarly.

I know this is kind of piling on, but I'm genuinely curious. Do you not understand where the term "sheep answer" came from?

This is true, but poorly run TDs do have a negative effect on the good ones, both by pushing them back farther in the queue and also by decreasing participation (lower perceived quality of the average contest).

It seems there may be a misunderstanding by the host of the TD dating system. I've always interpreted the dates on Randy's list to be the dates that you post the questions, not the deadline for the answers.
