6. Education For many years, the public colleges and Universities of California were a model for the rest of the US. The crown jewels of the that system were the University of California campuses. Name a campus of the University of California.

7. Politics California politics has often been entertaining when it hasn't been downright bewildering. Many California politicians have gone on to bigger and better things over the years, including the Presidency of the US. Name someone who's served as Governor of California since the end of World War II.

So, what's more surprising: that this question produced the biggest sheep of the quiz, or the identity of the sheep answer?

I chose it in the hopes that it would either be too obvious or that people would forget that "Cal" is a UC school. In doing so, I threw over my own alma mater, UC Irvine, as well as a semi-alma, UCLA, where I matriculated for 5 quarters.

That wasn't a bad choice as it turns out. Had I chosen UCI, I'd have 3 points from this question instead of 2. Had I chosen UCLA, I'd still have 2 points ... BUT HugoZ would have one less point and bamaman one more. I don't think I'm going to beat bamaman in this, so stepping on HugoZ's head in the hopes of grabbing one of the rungs above him was probably the better outcome. :D

8. Industry California has variously been ranked as the 12th to 20th largest economy in the world. Part of that reason is the number of businesses that have been headquartered in California. Name one of Fortune magazine's 50 most admired corporations (2011 list) that has its headquarters in California.

Now we come to the most dropped question in the quiz. No surprise, really, as I'm not very fond of subjective list questions, either. The key here was thinking about Silicon Valley as the source of most of those corporations.

In the UC question I could have gone with my older son's school, UCSB, but HAD to go with youngest son's - he just started at Santa Cruz. Go Banana Slugs! (they just had their "naked run" in the rain last week - but he doesn't know that I know that).

9 Literature California has been home to a number of famous writers. Arguably, one of the most famous of California's native sons is John Steinbeck. Name a novel written by John Steinbeck. Steinbeck wrote several novellas that are distinguished from his novels by being shorter stories. I am only counting his novels, not his novellas, in this TD. For the purposes of this TD, I will consider Wikipedia's classification of a work in question as authoritative.

And now on to our most contentious question. Yes, the novel/novella distinction is a fuzzy one, and I apologize to any who feel unfairly treated by this semi-arbitrary distinction.

If I'm going down, I'm taking others with me!

Per Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Of_mice_and_men
Of Mice and Men is a novella written by Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck. Published in 1937, it tells the tragic story of George Milton and Lennie Small, two displaced migrant ranch workers during the Great Depression in California.

Genre(s) Novella
(Also, it didn't get switched to my alternate, The Pearl, but that's also apparently a novella. But consarnit, if I can buy a NOVEL (Grapes of Wrath) cheaper than a NOVELLA (either Red Pony or Pearl) off Amazon ... that's just  )

(Addendum: ...no ####ing wonder Borders went defunct... $10 for 96 pages? Hello, McFly? I suddenly have less pity for the struggling book industry...)

Maybe so, but right on the cover of the book on that page it states, "A novel by John Steinbeck" :P .

It's got 12 fewer pages than The Red Pony. Either Pluto isn't a planet along with Eris or we're both planets. Pick yer poison!

Meanwhile...this whole book cost stuff has got me looking into prices on Amazon.
A 1328 page calculus textbook, weighing 6.1lbs, goes for $152.94 (on sale). That's $1.57/oz.
The Pearl, 96 pages, is 4.8oz, softcover!, goes for $10.40 (also on sale). $2.17/oz.

I am really losing pity for the book publishing industry, cause that is nowhere close to being right under any definition of the word.
