CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Mary Ciconte is an executive administrator from Lombard, Illinois. And you and your husband got engaged in a very different way, a different setting.

Mary: Um, I call it the ultimate game of chicken.

Alex: Really?

Mary: Because we had been talking about getting married, but none of us--I didn't take him seriously. He didn't take me seriously. So one time when I was stuck at a traffic light, he said, "When are you gonna marry me?" And I said, "Pull out a calendar," and he picked a date, and I picked a date, and I said, "Well, when I hang up, I'm going to tell my mother", and he said, "Well, when I hang up, I'm going to drive to my mother's house." So we just dared each other right into being engaged, and once we told our mothers, guess what? We were engaged. [Laughs] That was it.

[Laughter]

Alex: Oh, yes. Don't mess with Mom.

Alex: All right, Scott lord is a construction attorney from Southern California, and Placido Domingo sang at your home...

Scott: Yes.

Alex: ...for a charity event?

Scott: Sounds like a joke, but, yes, a few years ago, my mother's wife passed away from Alzheimer's, and since then, we've hosted an event at our house to try to raise money to fight the disease. Uh, through some people I knew, we were able to ask placido if he would be willing to come and sing, and to our surprise and delight, he said yes.

Alex: Good guy.

Scott: Yes.

Alex: Yeah.

Alex: Jennifer Morrow is our champion. You don't have to wave to me. I'm here.

[Laughter]

Alex: All right, Jennifer, you lead an annual charity drive.

Jennifer: Yes, there's a wonderful charity organization in New York called operation backpack that aims to supply every child in the New York homeless and domestic violence shelter system with a brand-new backpack to start off the school year, and for the last few years, I've led that drive that my company does. We aim to collect about a dozen full backpacks with school supplies, because you can also--you know, the thing is, all of the children need school supplies--

Alex: Yes.

Jennifer: --to go with the backpacks, and that can run into hundreds of dollars per child just given all the things they need, and--

Alex: Okay. You have just gotten the message across to all of our viewers in the New York City area. Well done, young lady.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Jennifer found the Daily Double on the 19th clue. Jennifer had $4,600, Scott had $1,800, and Mary was at $1,200. Jennifer wagered $1,500.

4-SYLLABLE WORDS $800: Geographic adjective for the part of Africa shown here

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
AMERICAN LIT $1000: Bullfights & heavy drinking are the order of the day in this 1926 novel with a title from Ecclesiastes

Jennifer: $6,100
Mary: $2,800

Clues revealed: 29
Triple Stumpers: 5
Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $7,200

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Scott snagged the next Daily Double on the 2nd clue. Jennifer had $6,100, Scott had $6,600, and Mary was at $2,800. Scott made it a True Daily Double, wagering $6,600.

THE BILL OF RIGHTS $1200: The 4th Amendment: None of these "shall issue, but upon probable cause"

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Jennifer who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 19th clue. Jennifer had $13,300, Scott had $18,800, and Mary was at $8,000. Jennifer wagered $4,000.

AT THE MONASTERY $1600: (Jimmy of the Clue Crew delivers the clue from the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Georgia.) Stained glass is one product the monks make to sustain themselves; the rule of this saint, also the namesake of a recent pope, tells them to live by their own hands
(Jennifer: Who is St. Francis? No.)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
ACTRESSES' EMMYS $1200: In 2005 Marcia Cross & Teri Hatcher lost out to this co-star of theirs

ACTRESSES' EMMYS $1600: Margo Martindale snagged an Emmy for playing criminal matriarch Mags Bennett on this modern-day Western

WHAT HAVE I DONE? $1200: Married Garry Trudeau

AT THE MONASTERY $2000: (Kelly of the Clue Crew delivers the clue from the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Georgia.) Perhaps the best-known Trappist monk was this author of the classic spiritual autobiography, "The Seven Storey Mountain"

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Scott: $17,600
Jennifer: $14,500
Mary: $8,000

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
POETRY

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place.
Scott: Wager $11,401 to cover Jennifer.
Jennifer: You have to wager $1,501 to cover Mary's doubled score, but certainly no more than $6,499, so as to force Mary to be right to have a chance at winning.
Mary: Think about risking $1,800 or less, thereby beating Scott on the Triple Stumper (should Scott wager to cover Jennifer's doubled score).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
Wagner's line "Oed' und leer das Meer", meaning "Waste and empty the sea", is quoted in a poem by this American-born man

FINAL SCORES
Mary: $8,000 - $8,000 = $0 (Who is Whitman?) (3rd place)
Jennifer: $14,500 - $2,000 = $12,500 (Who is Whitman?) (2nd place)
Scott: $17,600 + $11,401 = $29,001 (Who is Eliot) (New champion: $29,001)
(Alex: [To Scott] "Who is [*]?" Who wrote the poem The Waste Land).

Total Potential Lach Trash: $9,200

GAME DYNAMICS

MISCELLANEOUS INTERESTING CLUES
"R"IVERS $200: This colorful river "of the South" runs from N.M. to the Gulf of Mexico; the one "of the North", from N.D. to Lake Winnipeg
(Scott: What is Rio Grande?)

SPORTS & SONG $200: Crowds singing this song at Dodger or Yankee Stadium omit the 1st verse, starting "Katie Casey was baseball mad"
(Mary: What is "Casey at the Bat"?)
[Jennifer sings her response.]

SPORTS & SONG $400: "We Will Rock You" was the B-side of this Queen single; both have become sporting event favorites
(Mary: What is"Bohemian Rhapsody"?)

HELP ME, DR. SPOCK! $400: "This item is helpful for colic and to prevent thumb-sucking" (& it does give parents some peace)
(Alex: Yes, we would have accepted "binky" and "a jigger of rum".)
(Scott: Good to know.)
[Lausghter]

SPORTS & SONG $600: "Ever since I was young, it's been my dream / That I might drive" this machine; "I'd get the ice just as slick as could be"
(Alex: Yep, "and all the kids would look up to me".)

YOUR NUMBER IS UP $600: The layout of a clock face led to the military slang "on your" this number, meaning directly behind you
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]

THE WAY OF THE DODO $1200: Recent studies say dodos weren't as tubby as in a painting in this university's Ashmolean Museum

AT THE MONASTERY $1200: (Kelly of the Clue Crew delivers the clue from the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Georgia.) The monks of the Trappist Monastery of the Holy Spirit sustain themselves in part through bonsai, which was largely developed by Japanese monks of this Buddhist branch

WHAT HAVE I DONE? $2000: Killed Franz Ferdinand
(Scott: Who is Princeps?)

AT THE MONASTERY $400: (Jimmy of the Clue Crew delivers the clue from the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Georgia.) Trappist monks take three of these--stability to remain with one community, obedience to abbots, & conversion, meaning to change one's nature; there's no actual one of silence
(Alex: [*] is right. Less than a minute now).

AT THE MONASTERY $800: (Jimmy of the Clue Crew delivers the clue from the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Georgia.) The original home of the Holy Spirit monks was an old barn, & visitors can see these where they lived; it's a term that can refer to any individual room, not just for a prisoner

ACTRESSES' EMMYS $800: Uzo Aduba won for playing Crazy Eyes, an inmate on this series
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]

Jennifer's behavior didn't seem to be an issue today. She played an outstanding game, but the new champ was just that much better, and he got FJ correct. It was his good fortune as a lawyer to snag the DD in Bill of Rights, and as I suspected he might, he went TDD. (To people who lament the unfairness of this, always remember, the contestants are chosen without knowledge of what the questions are, and the questions are written without knowledge of who the contestants are.)

I got FJ by relying on the words "American-born" as a TOM, signalling that the poet was an expat. Whitman, Longfellow, Dickinson, etc., would not be described as "American-born."
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

I'd like to think Jennifer would have added the BA BA BUM! after her "Sweet Caroline" answer. :) (I did)

There's a reason I deliberately skipped the Poetry ML at LearnedLeague. :(

:( also for Jennifer, was really hoping she'd make it to the ToC! I would say "I hope she at least had fun", but this is Jennifer we're talking about. Of course she had fun!

Honestly Jennifer ... the number of times you specifically pointed out to watch today's episode made it kinda obvious to me that you were gonna lose. :? Sorry that it ended, but as it was said above, it's obvious you enjoyed yourself. Grats.

+1 for Take Me Out To The Ballgame, of course. :)

Ditto. Didn't sound like Whitman so I went with Frost (who it also didn't sound like, but that's all I had).

I had predicted that Jennifer would lose this game on Saturday based on her posts and tweets. She struck me as someone holding on to her weekend as reigning champion and determined to wring as much enjoyment as possible out of it before the fall. But then on Sunday I began to doubt my pre-call. Sure, for a regular run of the mill Jeopardy champion her behavior would predict a loss, but I could fully believe Jennifer could keep up that pace for 20 games (or more). Go Jennifer! I don't think anybody has had as much fun as you being champion. Oh, and I just got the meaning of your name here. I am slow.

My thought process for FJ "I have no clue what American poet is associated with the sea. I want to say Melville but he's not a poet. Lets read the line again. Waste...Wasteland...Eliot!"

My favorite Rule of St. Benedict is that every monk is limited to three glasses of wine a day, "which is sufficient for each". Indeed.

Wasn't fond of Jennifer's DD wagers. First round the questions in the category had been free money and she wagers small. In DJ she's gotta make a choice between big and small and does neither and accomplishes nothing. But after FJ it didn't matter.

Thought the intro was a little much. But in the end I like to see contestants have fun and no regrets while winning money through decent strategy, and she did that.

Jennifer, you were fun to watch; congratulations on your two wins. Scott played well to win; congrats to him as well. I had 36 correct responses including four triple stumpers: The Sun Also Rises, Felicity Huffman, anomaly, and Jane Pauley. I guessed Walt Whitman for FJ.

So I found it impossible to narrow it down too far, but I thought it would be interesting, whilst talking to my son about Jennifer and her success and struggle with the ADHD and behavior, to gather some of the tweets that went on while the show was live here in her native NY/NJ 7 PM EST:

This is a very interesting - and somewhat unnerving - situation for me. I'll explain:

First of all, I was prompting you all to watch for the ALEX BATUSI, which I thought was marvelous. I remember that getting a bigger cheer in the studio.

But speaking of memory, mine is, it seems, incredibly faulty. I started freaking out when I saw dhkendall's post about me getting "Sweet Caroline." I very specifically recall Mary getting that one. And the "What Have I Done?" line that followed my missed Daily Double was, in my memory, delivered much more dramatically - it was meant to serve as a PSYCH for the audience once I issued the cash amount, since the categories weren't visible from the audience. That was also not the case. I'm less upset about losing than perplexed, and more than a little disturbed, by this phenomenon.

Could any other former contestants weigh in on this? I've heard stories about "saw myself delivering answers I don't remember," but this is a totally new level of that, and honestly, a little creepy.

Immediately wrote Frost just to have something, then about 20 seconds in, the word waste jumped off the screen and I had it.

50/50/90 rule prevailed when I said Nicolette Sheridan instead of Felicity Huffman.

This was a fun game to watch. Congrats to Scott, I liked his demeanor and the gutsy DD. Loved the monastery category, which is no surprise since I am into Catholic trivia. Had just read the "The Seven Story Mountain," so I was a little sad to see that Thomas Merton was a triple stumper.

Lach Trash: The Sun Also Rises, Felicity Huffman, St. Benedict (DD), Jane Pauley, Thomas Merton.

Instaget FJ. The hints here were "waste" and "American born". It's usually expats who are often referred to as American born. Eliot was born in the US, but in adulthood became a British subject.

For FJ, I originally made a Wagner>Fascism>Ezra Pound connection, but figured they were looking for a simpler answer and that "waste" was there for a reason and went with Eliot.

I was going to comment that there felt like a pretty blatant edit after your DD and when you called the next subject. I suspect your memory is less faulty than you fear, and instead that their editors are more convincing than one would suspect.

EDIT: Oh, and I knew you were going for a Batusi there, but sadly, the majority of references I saw on Twitter went for Pulp Fiction references, sadly. They don't know their pop culture finger dances!
