I was trying to jog my memory as to which casino I'd seen this in. It was Foxwoods, on the long concourse out from the main casino to where they have their poker room. I couldn't find many good photos, but as I remember it, the sign over the table had pictures of Chinese dominos on it, even though the game was played with cards. It's been a long time, so my memory on this could well be faulty.Magna wrote:Yes, I rejected Pai Gow for that reason. Also, in the casinos I've been in, if you see a sign for "Pai Gow," it's for a card game, not a domino game.Woof wrote:Well, damn. I'm going to ask for a RQ for the craps question:
If the clue had said "yo" was used so this number wouldn't be confused with another, and just left it at that, it would've been good. But instead, it said the other number "usually ends a shooter's turn." That made me think it wasn't a seven, because a seven always ends the round. (If the question was referring to a player's chance to roll the dice, that always ends with a seven also.)In craps, this number is known as "yo", to avoid confusion with another number that usually ends a shooter's turn.

I'm curious why the word 'yo' is used. Is it derived from something related to the number eleven?

How many days are there in each round, and do people get eliminated after each round?

The 15-pointers are eating my lunch! But at least I didn't fall for the ma-jongg trap.
BTW, I played all four previous days. Is there some reason only three of them have been scored?

To prevent confusion between "seven" and "eleven", so 11 is either yo or yo-leven.mahatma wrote:I'm curious why the word 'yo' is used. Is it derived from something related to the number eleven?

My memory of seeing it played with tiles at the Mohegan Sun helped me get it. I didn't remember them being dominoes, but hey, whatever works.mahatma wrote:I was trying to jog my memory as to which casino I'd seen this in. Not to be neg-ative, but I don't think the people who said the Maya creation myth involved humans emerging from a corn maze should get credit.

But if the point is off, seven is a winning roll for the pass line. Therefore it doesn't always end the player's turn.Magna wrote:I'm going to ask for a RQ for the craps question:If the clue had said "yo" was used so this number wouldn't be confused with another, and just left it at that, it would've been good. Maybe it's an East Coast thing, but I've only ever seen pai gow played with dominoes. (The Connecticut casinos, for one, are magnets for Chinese gamblers, so much so that the seating arrangements usually skip the number 4.) I know there's a card version, but I don't think I've ever seen it.dinghammer wrote:My memory of seeing it played with tiles at the Mohegan Sun helped me get it. In hindsight, I should have switched the 9- and 12-pointers.

Not that I got it right or anything, but it seems like the "yo" is differentiating between a roll of 1-1 ("snake eyes") and a roll with a total of 11 ("yo"). At least as far as the question is concerned, 1-1 being the roll that "ends a shooter's turn."Vermonter wrote:But if the point is off, seven is a winning roll for the pass line. I think part of the ambiguity is in what "turn" means. It sometimes means a shooter's ongoing opportunity to throw the dice, but it sometimes is used to mean each opportunity he has to throw them (i.e., each round in which the same shooter throws the dice). See this page as an example (on a natural, pass bets win "and the shooter takes another turn to roll").Vermonter wrote:But if the point is off, seven is a winning roll for the pass line. Another ambiguity is what "usually ends a shooter's turn" means. I think you mean that, when a seven is rolled, it usually means a player's (ongoing) turn will end. But it could also mean that when a shooter's (ongoing) turn ends, it was usually because he rolled a seven. That's wrong - it's always because he rolled a seven.

Yikes, more ambiguity! (This one, as best I can tell, based on what "turn" means.)nlw44 wrote:Not that I got it right or anything, but it seems like the "yo" is differentiating between a roll of 1-1 ("snake eyes") and a roll with a total of 11 ("yo"). I think this is something like one of those duck-rabbit Gestalt images.

(For some reason, that sounded better when DoT was doing it, the fact that he's a minister made it extra special.)

Missed 2 and 8 (guessed Andrew and Aries); CLAMmed the rest (short English names? As opposed to...long Esperantto names???).
Got 3-12, CLAMmed 15.

There is apparently a bug with the web hosting company; they throw up a 403 page any time I try to add the word "poker" to a response. So the scores may take a bit longer to update.

Sounds like mahjongg is wrong, which makes it my first high-value neg. But I'm glad that I took a flyer on Baker for the alphabetically first Doctor portrayer name; I could only name David Tennant and Tom Baker, the latter because he shares a name with a ToCer. And I'm glad the clue only wanted last names, because otherwise I would have been burned by my lack of knowledge of the other Baker.
