CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex:
Rachel winer is a graduate student from Vermont who stayed awake for how long as part of a sleep study?

Rachel:
Uh, it was 50 hours.

Alex:
Wow.
How do you stay awake for 50 hours?

Rachel:
Well, they actually had someone in the room with me the whole time to make sure I didn't fall asleep.
But, uh, played a lot of games, and listened to some music.

Alex:
And what did they discover in this study?

Rachel:
Honestly, I have no idea.

Alex:
'Cause then you fell asleep and slept for 50 hours.

Rachel:
Exactly.

Alex:
All right.

Alex:
Meg price from Stillwater, Oklahoma.
A professor of medieval literature.

Meg:
That's right.

Alex:
But you're not from Oklahoma, are you?

Meg:
I'm not originally from Oklahoma, No.

Alex:
With an accent like that, I would say No.
Where are you from?

Meg:
I'm from Wales.

Alex:
Wales.
Beautiful country.

Meg:
Yes, it is.

Alex:
The language leaves a lot to be desired in terms of pronouncing it properly and being able to read it.
For guys like me, it's impossible.

Meg:
Mm-hmm.
There's a lot of spitting.

Alex:
But--but I understand that Welsh is becoming more popular now in schools and there is kind of a renaissance--

Meg:
There is.

Alex:
--of the Welsh language.

Meg:
There's a language movement.

Alex:
So do you speak Welsh?

Meg:
I used to be quite fluent, but I'm little rusty now.

Alex:
Yeah, Oklahoma will do that to you.

Meg:
It will.

Alex:
Okay.

Alex:
Jeff amoros is our champion.
Uh, what's this about--you went boogie boarding in Maine in the summer, and you got hypothermia?

Jeff:
Yes, I did.
The water was about 52 degrees, I was in there for a few hours and got hypothermia.
So my legs started seizing up, and I started drowning in about 2 1/2 feet of water.

Alex:
Wow.

Jeff:
Yeah.
My dad sprinted down, picked me up, carried me out. I got to go to the hospital up in Maine to warm me up.

Alex:
How do they warm you up?

Jeff:
Lobster bisque.

Alex:
Of course, of course.
Why can't I get hypothermia?

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Jeff found the Daily Double on the 19th clue. Jeff had $3,400, Meg had $1,400, and Rachel was at $2,400. Jeff wagered $2,200.

(Jeff: What is Heroic?)

SITCOM SPOUSES $1000: Jim Backus & Natalie Schafer

DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
ON WISCONSIN (4/5, including 1 missed Daily Double)
THE CON FILM FESTIVAL (5/5)
GILBERT & SULLIVAN (5/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)
THE 1930s (3/5)
I'M BORED! (4/5)
FRENCH CROSSWORD CLUES (4/5)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
Meg: 10 R (including 1 rebound and 1 DD), 1 W
Rachel: 6 R, 0 W
Jeff: 9 R, 4 W (including 1 DD)

Clues revealed: 30
Triple Stumpers: 4
Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $6,800

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Meg snagged the next Daily Double on the 9th clue. Jeff had $4,600, Meg had $6,400, and Rachel was at $7,000. Meg wagered $1,600.

GILBERT & SULLIVAN $1200: A perennial favorite, it is set in a rather inauthentic version of Japan

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Jeff who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 28th clue. Jeff had $11,400, Meg had $8,000, and Rachel was at $12,200. Jeff wagered $2,000.

ON WISCONSIN $2000: You can polish off this clue if you know that Frank Lloyd Wright designed the HQ for this company in Racine
(Jeff: What is Pledge?)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
FRENCH CROSSWORD CLUES $2000: Up to date (2, 7)

THE 1930s $1200: In 1934 F. Scott Fitzgerald published this novel about psychiatrist Dick Diver & his schizophrenic wife
(Jeff: What is This Side of Paradise?)

THE 1930s $2000: World War I veterans demanding extra pay for their service made up the 1930s group known as this army
(Jeff: What is Coxey's Army?)

I'M BORED! $1600: Take a hike! Up this impressive 8,800-foot formation in Yosemite National Park
(Meg: What is Devil's Tower?)

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Rachel: $12,200
Jeff: $11,000
Meg: $10,000

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
COINS OF THE WORLD

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place. Stratton's Dilemma.
Rachel: Wager $9,801 to cover Jeff.
Jeff: You ought to wager to cover Meg, but since you cannot win on a Triple Stumper if you do so, you ought to choose between wagering $0 or maximizing your winnings with a bet of all $11,000. You are in Stratton's Dilemma, calling for a wager of more than $9,000 (to shut out Meg) or less than $8,600 (risking the possibility of being passed from behind by Meg). Go with the smaller bet if you believe a Triple Stumper is more likely than a singleton miss by Rachel.
Meg: You ought to try wagering between $1,001 and $7,600. This will top a $0 wager by Jeff while still beating Rachel and Jeff on the Triple Stumper (should Rachel wager to cover Jeff's doubled score and Jeff wager to cover your doubled score).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
50 Cent pieces issued in 2003 by this country depict Frodo, Gandalf, Gollum, Sauron & Aragorn

FINAL SCORES
Meg: $10,000 + $2,201 = $12,201 (What is New Zealand?) (3rd place: $1,000)
Jeff: $11,000 + $9,001 = $20,001 (What is New Zealand?) (2nd place: $2,000)
Rachel: $12,200 + $10,000 = $22,200 (What is New Zealand?) (New champion: $22,200)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $8,600

GAME DYNAMICS
Image

CORYAT SCORES
Jeff: $15,200, 21 R, 5 W (including 2 DDs)
Rachel: $12,200, 14 R, 0 W
Meg: $9,600, 17 R (including 1 DD), 1 W
Combined Coryat: $37,000

BATTING AVERAGES
Jeff: 22/60 = .367
Meg: 18/59 = .305
Rachel: 15/58 = .259
Team: 55/63 = .873

(Jeff: What is an anteater?)

The characteristic shape of this whale, the only species in the genus megaptera, makes it the easiest great whale to identify

MAMMALS $1000: It's not a feline, it's not a reptile, it's the fossa, the largest carnivore of this island off Africa

Well, that was certainly a close game! The instaget FJ kinda ruined it, though. Love Meg's accent (and handwriting).

Jeff blew his foot off too many times with the two missed DDs and the phrasing error. Take away one of those and he could have won the game.

The FJ clue had to have some viewers with no shot at home as the names would be unknown and the country just about unguessable. For anyone familiar with the characters and any knowledge of movie trivia then the clue was precious.

This board seems to have a familiar set up to the BAM Bored where I've been hanging out, so that's comfortable. Thanks for getting this set up.

I knew she wasn't really from Oklahoma!

It was a good game. FJ! was an instaget for me (although I thought about "Gondor" or "the Shire" since the category didn't specify which world  ). I was surprised that "I Love Lucy" and "Gilligan's Island" were TS.

Interesting that they reversed "anteater". I wonder if they would have done the same for my answer of aardvark (Afrikaans for "earth pig")?

Seems like I missed the "fun" - took a while for me to figure out what y'all were talking about.

I at least hope that he doesn't surface at all this week. Doing that with adults is creepy. During Kid's Week, 10googol fold more.
