Another member of our tribe got The Call. Time to start writing again.

Taping is in about 3 weeks, so consider this our Sports SHC Bat Signal.

Who is it this time?

Studying will be helpful but my main strategy would be to give Vinny a good, hard kidney punch behind the lecturns. :D

Here are three to get you started.

I'LL BE THE CHEERLEADER

250: In college, this U. S. Senator and former Majority Leader who resigned his seat in 2007 carried the Confederate flag onto the field before Ole Miss football games.

500: Phyllis Smith of The Office cheered for this NFL team -- not the MLB team in the same city with the same nickname -- in the 1970's.

750: I am a cheerleader at Amsterdam High School for now, but I'll be Spartacus soon enough.

1000: The two most recent Presidents to be cheerleaders in college; one yelled at Yale, the other cheered for Eureka College in Illinois.
Spoiler
250 -- Trent Lott
500 -- Saint Louis Cardinals
750 -- Kirk Douglas
1000 -- George W. Bush & Ronald Reagan, noting that Eisenhower, Hoover, and FDR were all also cheerleaders at one point in their college careers.
YOU'LL "B" THE MASCOT

500: Teams with this nickname won three NCAA tournament games in 2014 -- Baylor over Nebraska and Creighton, and Mercer over Duke.

1000: Though Gonzaga replaced animals with costumed humans in the 1980's, Butler still brings a live one of these named Blue to basketball games.

1500: With an S on the end, they are the nickname of Lipscomb University in Nashville; without the S, they represent North Dakota State and Bucknell.

2000: American Idol contestant Melinda Doolittle donned this mascot costume for her alma mater, Belmont University.
Spoiler
500 -- Bears
1000 -- Bulldogs
1500 -- Bison(s)
2000 -- Bruin
ALMA MATER HAIL TO THE CHIEF

250: A left-handed hitting first baseman, he led Yale to the College World Series in 1948.

500: As middle linebacker for the West Point Cadets in 1912, his job in one game was to try to tackle Carlyle star Jim Thorpe.

750: While studying politics at Oxford, Bill Clinton was one of the fifteen players on the field playing this sport for the school.

1000: After winning a conference championship as a backup center at Michigan in 1933, the team went winless in conference play the next year with him starting as a senior.
Spoiler
250 -- George H. W. Bush
500 -- Dwight Eisenhower (after a knee injury, he became JV football coach and a varsity cheerleader)
750 -- Rugby Union (prompt on rugby)
1000 -- Gerald Ford

ESPN had a great sports trivia show back in the mid-2000's called Stump the Schwab which pitted you against Howie Schwab, an ESPN statistician, who I saw recently is now with Sports Jeopardy. I don't get ESPN Classic anymore so I don't know if they re-air it, but I think you can find episodes online and I think it's well worth watching.

Am friends with the first contestant to stump Howie, upon losing the Schwab threw a complete fit in the studio. Stuart Scott had no idea what to do, they had to stop taping because a contestant winning hadn't been considered.

Stump the Schwab was light years more difficult than Sports Jeopardy.

I never knew that happened, Golf. Thanks for sharing. Stump the Schwab was tough as nails but so much fun for sports nuts. They asked for obscure stuff, and an exhaustive list of it, at that.

Time to out myself: I get to play Sports Jeopardy! in a few weeks. I needed some time to stop hyperventilating and put a study plan in place. Thanks to DoT for getting the ball rolling on questions. Mark, I will find Stump the Schwab on YouTube, although I have a feeling it will make me more anxious. I'm currently hoping that I won't see Vinny there. I love watching Vinny, but he would wipe the floor with me.

The good news is that I feel like my strengths are in what are hopefully less common areas: NASCAR, horse racing, Olympics and the like. However, I have huge gaps to fill in college football, the NBA, and recent events. I think being a parent of a child with a sleep disorder means I have a hard time remembering recent sports. I remember lots of stuff from the 80s and early 90s. I've been playing Sporcle quizzes for things I would like to commit to memory, and I've started a notebook of general timelines for different sports and names I should recognize or know just enough about to get the TOM.

I appreciate any help I would get. Also, if any of you would like to see the taping, it's the second week of February. My husband can't come, and I can bring 6 guests.

Thanks to DoT and heels for keeping my secret for a few days.

Players with prior J! experience have done well on the show. Sid from the 12/9 game outplayed Vinny for much of the game, so your buzzer experience will be an asset. That is exciting news to see you got the call.

For Super Bowls from 1970 - 79:

The Vikings lost four. The Cowboys lost three times. The other three losers were Dolphins, Redskins, and Broncos. The Dolphins played three in a row.

Even if Vinny is still there do not lose the game before it starts. Just like in regular J! even the superchamps taste defeat. Find the DDs and make them work for you.

Thanks, Mark! IIRC, the Dolphins lost the first and won the next two.

My goal is to avoid making the NOT Top 10. If I can do that, life will be good. It will be fun to play again at the very least.
