Brahman Naman

Post by sumithar »

Brahman Naman is a newly released movie available on NetFlix- only reason I bring it up is that the protagonist and his friends are quizzers on the college circuit and quizzing loosely forms the b/g to the movie (which really is a kind of homage to the 80's sex comedies like Porky's). The movie is interspersed with scenes from quiz competitions and quiz questions.
Also it was written by a guy I used to know on the Bangalore quiz circuit in the early 90's, Naman Ramachandran.

While not explicit, it's not family viewing either...

It's not too bad. To some extent I could identify with them since I was one of them! It has only 1 star on Netflix, but I think it's better than that. Like I said, if you like quizzes you can enjoy the milieu.

Does it star Steve Brahmannaman?

I hadn't heard anyone use the term "potel" before. Is that a real word, or did they make it up for this movie?

Here's a review from a former quiz bowl teammate who is also big in the Indian quizzing scene and a pretty fine author.

This is a good review. That situation where Naman and his friend find themselves in a Muslim area reminded me of the one time I got lost in Sultanpalya and I will admit honestly I was scared because I saw only Muslims all around me. I wasn't sure how they would react to an "outsider". We rather nervously asked someone for directions and he was a very nice gentleman who pretty much escorted us out of the area!
