Re: TD 331 - Academy Awards - Bonus 2

Post by morbeedo »

BONUS #2 While researching this quiz, I discovered that the Academy Award for Costume Design has twice been presented to two films with the same title but released in different years. For -2 points each, name one or both of these film titles, which were released in 1952/2001 and 1974/2013.

This is a tough one, so here’s some more information. The 1952 film received 7 nominations, including Directing (John Huston) and Best Motion Picture, and also won the award for Art Direction (Color). The 2001 film, a musical, received 8 nominations, including Actress in a Leading Role and Best Picture; it also won the Art Direction award.

Both the 1974 and 2013 films, based on a 1925 American novel, received two nominations, and each film won in both categories. In addition to Costume Design, the 1974 film won the Academy Award for Music (Score), while the 2013 film won for Production Design. A 1949 film with the same title was not nominated for any Academy Awards.

The same director, an Australian, directed both the 2001 and 2013 films.

This was fun as my first TD quiz -- and I learned several pointers I'll keep in mind for the next game. Thanks much.

jks
I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

Great game as always. Mentioning the Australian Director gave away the bonus. Would've been tougher otherwise.

For me, 'musical' confirmed my Moulin Rouge suspicions, and 1925 novel -> Great Gatsby, without which I never would've gotten that half of it. Turns out I needed every single point off I could get!

It's nice to see my efforts to not suck at Oscars trivia pay off. Thought I was out of it after costing myself 5pts switching from Argo to Marty for Q3, or not remembering Patty Duke.

Wonderful TD! Thanks morbeedo for the great game, and congrats to my fellow podium-mates.

PS: LOL @ 27 drops for Q13.

48th out of 50 contenders. Well, it's an honor just to be nominated.

Thanks for a fun TD! :)

I didnt know there was a previous version of moulin rouge. But id heard a lot of interviews with luhrmann around the time he made gatsby which drew paralells to moulin rouge. Thats how i figured it out.

Oscar trivia is always good to have.

Thanks to all for playing! I had so much fun with this one I might need to start working on the sequel!

More on the second bonus:

At the 74th Academy Awards, Moulin Rouge! was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Nicole Kidman. The film was the first musical nominated for Best Picture in 10 years, following Disney's Beauty and the Beast (1991).

Moulin Rouge (1952) - not a musical- stars José Ferrer as Toulouse-Lautrec and Zsa Zsa Gabor as Jane Avril. From Wikipedia - source of all things true:

The film was not nominated for its color cinematography, which many critics found remarkable. Leonard Maltin, in his annual Movie and Video Guide declared: "If you can't catch this in color, skip it."

And

In an interview shortly after his successful film version of Cabaret opened, Bob Fosse acknowledged Huston's filming of the can-can in Moulin Rouge as being very influential on his own film style.

This one's on my must see list now!

After playing TDs since 2009 or so on the old board, 3rd place is (to my recollection) my highest finish and very first time on the podium. ("You like me! You really like me!") Thanks for a great game. :D

Congratulations, Brandon, and best luck in LA next month!

Congrats, too, to the other podium finishers, and many thanks to morbeedo for hosting a most entertaining TD. In case you haven't figured out (Learned League players take notice), the silver screen isn't one of my strongest categories--but I'm trying to improve, and games like this help.

Here's a little Oscar history for anyone who's interested. Captain Obvious might appreciate the bit about Beauty and the Beast :)

And here's a tricky 2017 Oscars quiz to wreck your head.
