Seems like the only clarity we've gained from this poll is that most people have seen a booted car

Clammed (Eastern time zone) because I figured they were looking for the specific city term, not just a parking boot, and just could not pull Denver.

I've mostly heard it as a verb/participle, you get your car booted. (A boot block, in our local parlance, is when the Fire Department collects money at intersections for United Way or something like that. They collect the money in their boot. The practice has been stopped, due to accidents/injuries.)

Anyhow, I stayed clam, as I'm pretty sure the category title cannot be the answer to the clue. I've pavlov'd too many times to think it will work this time.

Any Law Enforcement pros on here? What is your jargon?

I didn't mind missing REDACTED thought it was a cute clue.
Please keep other spoilers out of this thread.
Fixed it I think. Sorry about that, forgot it wasn't a game thread.

Is that actually necessary? The title of the thread says it contains spoilers for today's game, I don't see why you would come in here if you wanted to avoid spoilers.

I have always just heard "boot," as both a noun and a verb. I rang in without thinking and, knowing that couldn't be enough given the category, mumbled "car boot."

I recently saw one on a golf cart that was parked on a public street. I wondered whether it was put there by police, because the cart had been there for too long, or whether the owner put it on as a security precaution.

I'm not really sure this is something one could reasonably expected "...bothering to learn." You've either heard the term "Denver Boot" used for the device or you haven't.

I was raised in Victoria, BC, Canada, and have lived in Vancouver, Toronto, Delaware, Chicago, and Miami.

I have no memory of ever encountering the terms "Denver boot" or "Oregon boot".

I clammed when the clue was read, because I just call it a "boot", and I knew that couldn't have been enough, given the category.

Maybe I would have been able to come up with "parking boot" if somebody forced me to say something more specific, although it's possible that I also would have just mumbled "car boot" or "wheel boot" or something.

Yes, but you are familiar with "a boot." You know, "It's a boot 30 degrees outside today." :)

Which, of course, would be a good way to determine if somebody were pretending to be Canadian.

For instance, if you heard that in the winter, you'd know they were faking.

Yes, but skullturf lives in the U.S. now so he's forced to use Fahrenheit temps. I just hope he hasn't stooped to pronouncing the letter Z as "zee," though.

The Simpsons episode where the family drives to New York City.

Homer illegally parks.

I seem to recall them calling it a Denver Boot on that episode.

I really don't think they did. I'm a huge Simpsons fan and I probably would have remembered it.

I tried a different way with a DVD of the episode. I heard Homer say:

I'll never get out of here with this rotten boot.
So long Mr. boot.

I listened to the relevant parts of the commentary and no mention was made of the boot. There was also one earlier scene with the boot when it first appears. Homer does not know what the thing is and one of the guys in the tower tells him to call the number on the boot. It's shown as 555-BOOT.

It wasn't (303) 555-BOOT, was it?

I knew it as Denver boot before I moved to Denver and have actually seen one in use on some unfortunate person's car. Not mine, that's why I use RTD.
