2017 College Championship wild card standings (Final standings)

Post by Bamaman »

This is a thread devoted to tracking the wild card standings for the college tournament. As always, comments, predictions and observations are both welcome and encouraged. But please do no not make any comments about a game you have seen until the standings have been updated in the thread. I will update in the thread title once the standings have been updated.

There are three "Game 2s" in the Wild Card section.

The lowest wildcard in the 2016 College Championship was $14,400 which was a three-way tie and two of those players advanced.
The lowest wildcard in the 2014 College Championship was $11,370.
The lowest wildcard in the 2013 College Championship was $9,199.
The lowest wildcard in the 2012 College Championship was $12,799.
The lowest wildcard in the 2010-B College Championship was $15,800.
The lowest wildcard in the 2010-A College Championship was $13,584.

The average score that would secure a wildcard over the last 6 tournaments is $12,589.

Wednesday brings our first two eliminations. They'd have been on the bubble if they had gotten FJ right anyway and Hannah would still have been out if both had gotten it right.

We now know who our first two wild card players will be. Congratulations to Netanel and Mari.

We also see Corey and Jennifer eliminated. Both held back some money in FJ, but it wouldn't have mattered. We will have to wait to see if Clarissa's overbet or Allison's underbet cost them.

Yeah, I was noticing 5 through 8 had no chance whatsoever. Even if they went all in and got FJ! right they would have still fallen short. And luckily for Mari holding back that $199 won't hurt her unless it's to lower her seeding.

For this tournament, only Allison has cause to regret her FJ wager. Had Zach clammed on the last clue today, he could have finished with $15,200 and knocked out Clarissa and her too big wager.

Despite her poor FJ bet, I'm glad to see Clarissa get through. She actually had the highest Coryat in her game, and her two opponents both advanced. In terms of trivia knowledge and buzzer speed, she is definitely worthy of the semifinals.

Of course, she only managed this because Allison gave up her certain SF spot with that incomprehensible bet.

Really amusing note; if Netanel in game 1 had gotten his FJ wrong instead of right, he would have finished with $13,200...which would have been just enough for him to squeak into the semis. And had he stayed pat at $0 (a reasonable wager), he would have been eliminated if Allison bet normally.

So that $2400 turned out to be practically perfect, looking at it now.

I don't think anyone has noted that they have gone back to a Monday-Friday schedule for the tournament.

I don't understand the point you're making. If Netanel bets nothing and Allison doubles up, the standings look like this:

Automatic semi-finalists
1. Lilly Chin: $20,000+$4,399=$24,399
2. Viraj Mehta: $23,000-0=23,000
3. Alex Bourzutschky: $20,000+$3,599=$23,599
4. Allison Holley: $9,000+$9,000=$18,000
5. Julia Marsan: $15,400+$9,000=$24,400

Wild cards
1. Gary Tse (Game 5): $22,845+$0=$22,845
2. Mari Hanley (Game 3): $8,200+$8,001=$16,201
3. Netanel Paley (Game 1): $15,600+$0=$15,600
4. Mohan Malhotra (Game 4): $14,800+$800=$15,600
------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Clarissa Santori (Game 3): $18,000-$4,000=$14,000
6. Zach Atwell (Game 5): $6,400+$6,400=$12,800
7. Jennifer Katz (Game 2): $6,100+$6,000=$12,100
8. Corey Schmalzle (Game 4): $6,000+$5,000=$11,000
9, Hannah Whisnant (Game 2): $7,000-$6,999=$1
10. Esteban Fernandez (Game 1): $7,400-$7,400=$0

I thought my point was quite clear in the quoted portion; "And had he stayed pat at $0 (a reasonable wager), he would have been eliminated if Allison bet normally.". (Of course, Allison did not bet normally)

Ergo, going for the $18000 was better than staying pat.

I thought BigDaddyMatty was quite clear in showing that Allison's doubling up and Netanel's standing pat would not lead to Netanel's elimination. If he had been wrong with his $2,400 wager and Allison had doubled up, he would have been eliminated.

Oh, my mistake! That's what he meant. (Edit- Matty should have just told me "You're wrong!" instead of "I don't understand". :))

Yes, he is right and I was wrong; forgot that Netanel had the exact amount that Mohan finished with.
