Wow. Thanks for sharing that article. It's easy to make a snap judgment about a contestant based on how they look/talk/act on camera, but we really know nothing about these people. I thought Annie had a cool vibe and the waving thing didn't bother me at all, even if it looked a little awkward. I just saw some unkind posts on Twitter about Rachel, the woman at the center podium with the really flat affect in Annie's second game. People said she had an attitude and a RBF, when really she was probably just nervous or super focused. Even Alex told her she didn't look happy when she found a DD :/

Definitely not what one would think of a stereotypical contestant, but I think that's one of the best parts of the show: everyone gets to showcase their talents, and they all come from different backgrounds. This article, for, gives more background on the "unemployed bartender" job title.

I would say no. Not all authoritarian governments are totalitarian, and the clue was clearly indicating the latter in terms of controlling all aspects of citizens' lives. As Wikipedia accurately notes, authoritarian governments are mainly concerned with complete political power and can allow a certain amount of freedom outside of that, as they're not trying to alter human nature. Totalitarian governments mean total control.

So, like Soviet Union (authoritarian) vs. North Korea (totalitarian)?

That said, I love any and all Johnny Gilbert categories. Dude looks and sounds amazing for 92. I am convinced that both he and Betty White are both Highlanders.

As do I. As soon as I got over my admiration for the category group as a whole (I might have a new favourite category theme round) I kept yelling at my TV for them to go to the Johnny Gilbert category because I so wanted to hear his sonorous voice ringing out reading the clues.

I have never seen a single episode of that show (either version) but I know he was good at doing stuff like that and got it right pretty quickly after a brief flirtation with Tim Taylor.

As for Annie's FJ wagers..,,

I thought her Wednesday bet was fine. I don't agree that in a lock it should be all or nothing. I understand EV and all that, but estimating your chances of getting FJ right is guesswork. Yes, there are subjects I am better at than others, but a lot of categories are very vague. Plus, a lot of factors can go into consideration in making a wager like that. For instance, how many games have a I won? How much money have a already earned? Do I have enough yet to make the TOC? What is my current financial situation?

Yes, I'd always bet heads on the 60% coin.

But I think she chose that amount just to end up at exactly $20,000.

I did not lie her bet Thursday or in this game. On Thursday, she gave third place a chance to win even if they made a zero bet. Today, she gave third a chance to win when third is out if she makes the MSB.

Still, I enjoyed reading the article about her. Congrats on overcoming a bunch of obstacles (some self inflicted) to be a Jeopardy champion. Good for her for not letting her past define her and working hard to make a better life for herself.

Still, IIRC, the wording of the clue pointed to an adj. - this type of government" - so the response of "totalitarianism" didn't really fit. The judges could just as easily have ruled against Annie on that one.

How does "this type" point exclusively toward an adjective? Is totalitarianism not a type of government?

Of course, they both refer to the same thing, but there's a grammatical difference and the judges have ruled against contestants many times for giving the wrong form of a word.

Only when the category or clue has specified the number of letters or the part of speech.

Anyway, the clue states ''A dictatorship may be this form of government...", so maybe they were looking for the noun after all. When I heard the clue, I was thinking 12-letter word / adjective, so Annie's response was jarring, but given the category and the wording of the clue, they'd probably have to accept both.

It wouldn't surprise me if I found out that clue might have been written for a 12-LETTER WORDS category, but they broadened the word length criterion to make the adjective and the "-ism" both acceptable.

But just lately, Morbeedo has run a Boston Qualifier, which I could only have hoped to do with a year of prep and one of the fast flat or downhill courses.

Topically, my bucket list was pretty much complete until I joined this forum and now I must see a taping of Jeopardy. I don't even plan to consider testing as I have to bend the rules to get 28-30 right.

Depends what era you mean with the Soviet Union. It was totalitarianism under Stalin, authoritarian under Gorbachev, Chernenko, and Andropov, and debatable with the Khrushchev and Brezhnev eras.

Then during the final episode there's a question about "Leather and Lace" where the answer is Stevie Nicks, but no one rings in. We were all surprised Annie of all people didn't get that one. That's why she says something like "of course" to which Alex responds.

I cheered Annie like crazy for that TDD and harangued Adam and Jessica--especially Jessica for their terrible DD wagers. Someone's going to see the outcome of this game and learn the wrong lesson. (Is it wrong to hope that that person is matched up against me when someday I receive The Call?)
