Another very general rule, with MANY exceptions, is that "XXX State University" or "XXX A & M" is usually a land-grant college founded in the late 19th century under a law providing federal lands to colleges with an agricultural focus.

There are also a number of former A&M's that are now known as other things. I don't have a comprehensive list, but The Ohio State University was originally known as Ohio A&M, and the same with Oklahoma State University. There have also been some current and former A&I's and A&T's.
