That poor, poor marionette...

5. THOSE WHO ARE ABOUT TO DIE, WE SALUTE YOU
Ahh, the Honorary Oscar. The "You did such a good job throughout your career and we're sorry we kept ignoring you" award. It didn't start out that way, though. The first Honorary Oscar went to Warner Bros., for The Jazz Singer. The second, to Charlie Chaplin, so he wouldn't get four for The Circus (writing, acting, directing and producing...should have made it twice the size at least!). Chaplin would, eventually, get a competitive Oscar (Best Score, Limelight). This is for those who didn't even get that lucky.
Name a recipient of an Honorary Oscar who was nominated for, but never won, any competitive Oscar.

You may have noticed a peculiar rule regarding a cutoff date for awards. Well, the reason is the Honorary awards for the 2012 Ceremony get handed out early, so I wanted to ensure one recipient would be valid. (Due to the next remark, two ended up being valid.)

I originally planned to explicitly exclude the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and the Irving G. Thalberg Award, but I just plum forgot. Good thing too, as our sheep received just the Thalberg.

Han shot first!

6. LIKE SOME CHEESES, SOME MOVIES DO NOT AGE WELL
Quick! Think of your 10 favorite movies. If you're like most people, 10 of those will not be a Best Picture winner. It's a favorite party game to complain how AMPAS can't pick films that stand the test of time, and in the coming months, expect to see the inevitable "Top 10 biggest Best Picture blunders" lists. Well, it's now your chance to get a head start on them!
Name a Best Picture nominee with a higher IMDb rating than the movie it lost to.

I liked the answers here, although I thought Raiders would have gotten more love. The two sheeps didn't surprise me in the slightest; what did surprise me was the sole miss...

I so wanted to guess Pulp Fiction, but I had no idea if it had a higher number than Forrest Gump. Shawshank Redemption was a sure shot to be higher and I had to go with that to avoid a neg.

Field of Dreams has a higher rating than Driving Miss Daisy (and both rated in the mid-7s)?? it's IMDB. Whatever.

I really need to study Academy Award history, even if just for laughs. Some of the names in that 'never won' question are borderline criminal. Not Oprah though. What the hell...

I'm in the lead? How amusing. I'll just sit back and wait for the usual ridiculous sheep :P

I was staying as far away from Shawshank and Pulp Fiction as I could. I knew they were both (deservedly, I think) in the IMDB top 10, and that Forrest Gump (I think this is appropriate, too), wasn't. Leon and The Lion King also came out that year... and Forrest Gump still won the Oscar... oh well.

I wanted to stay away from Pulp Fiction, Shawshank, Raging Bull, and Saving Private Ryan, and I hoped that people wouldn't remember that Star Wars was a BP nominee in '77. Oh well.

Whew! I was worried that would sheep and I'd regret not going more obscure. One of the oddly specific clumps of information in my memory is that I happen to know all 5 nominees for Best Picture for 1981:

Atlantic City
Chariots of Fire
(winner)
On Golden Pond
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Reds

Raiders
was the only one I was sure would beat Chariots of Fire's IMDB rating. But I also knew it was the least likely to garner me a singleton. After turning in my answers, I looked up the others and confirmed that, yes, all of them have higher IMDB ratings than Chariots. (I wonder how many other Best Picture winners have that distinction.) So I was regretting not being more gutsy with my arcane knowledge. But Raiders got me the singleton just as nicely as any of the other three would have.

Looks like smooth sailing from here on out... (cue ominous music)

This question was the bomb.

7. TO THE VICTOR GOES...NOTHING!
You might not realize it, but in the past 29 years, only 10 of the Best Picture winners failed to pull in over $100 million at the box office. (Is it due, in part, to the Oscars now being used as a high profile advertisement for Fall releases? Perish the thought! Actually, don't. It's actually a pretty decent theory.)
Name a Best Picture winner, 1982-present, that failed to break the $100 million mark

I dunno, am I scoring these too fast for people to digest? I do sorta want to just get the smeg through them, though. I had no idea how freakin huge this data set would end up being.

And oof. I had not intended this, (not on this question, at least, but more on that later :) ). I guess I got thrown by the prolific nature of some of them...and none of those got used. They'll probably seem obvious in retrospect.

I was sure there was no way The Last Emperor hit the mark and that The Hurt Locker would blow up in my face. I considered Out of Africa, but the star power had me too unsure to guess it.

Why the surprise for Driving Miss Daisy doing well at the box office? It's like The King's Speech where there were viewers who might have seen only one movie the whole year, but that was the one. It's a wonderful movie where the voters did the right thing. The only crime was Bruce Beresford, the director, not even getting a nomination. I love certain shots in the movie and credit goes to him adding to the greatness of the performances.

My answer was a typo for "Sasheen Littlefeathers", just as I tried to tell you after I definitely absolutely did not look up how much money Driving Miss Daisy made. This is so unfair.

No complaints here.

Man, on the less than $100M question... I should have put more thought into it. Looking at these numbers, I think a very good metric is "would this be a good first date movie for the average American?"

For some reason Driving Miss Daisy flew under my radar while it was in the theaters. I did end up renting it later, but I just don't recall any hullabaloo about the film while it was out. Meanwhile, I do recall a big deal being made out of Amadeus, which I knew was a correct answer. I'd checked its box office when I was preparing my Classical Music TD. I figured if Amadeus was right, then a fortiori, Driving Miss Daisy was as well, and more likely to be a singleton.

I was so confident of my answer that I initially didn't even bother checking it after making my submission. Hours later, for the sake of completeness, I went ahead and looked it up and was stunned. But just prior to looking it up (as I keep trying to explain to the quiz-meister), and for no apparent reason, I PM'ed Volante and asked to change my answer to Sasheen Littlefeathers. Honest.

Don't the Marx Brothers qualify? This was one of the very few answers in this quiz I knew, as I remember one of Groucho's last public appearances before his death in 1977 was accepting the honourary Oscar on behalf of his brothers.

15 years later the thought of this film still bores me to tears. I figured it had to be a correct answer.
