Re: Monday, April 16, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
[quote="heisman65"]Having been in the audience, I can tell you that Judy's loss was even more painful than what we saw on TV. Alex initially ruled her correct, then they immediately stopped taping, had a confab with the producers and writers, and eventually ruled her incorrect. Heartbreaking. If she had only left off Holbrook's first name, she might have had time to cross out the Samuel bit.
I had breakfast with her the next morning at the hotel and she was still kicking herself over it. Despite her torment, I still got the sense that she was genuinely happy with the whole experience. She's just a very upbeat, positive woman, which I think came through loud and clear on TV.
Thank you Heisman65. And I sincerely apologize for forgetting your first name. (It isn't Hal or Harry is it?) I truly appreciate your kindness that morning. As anyone who's lost on Jeopardy! knows, it's pretty demoralizing. The staff makes a big deal about how special we contestants are before we go on. But when you're out of the game, they call you a cab and tape the next show. And there you are on the Sony lot, walking to the street and clutching all the outfits you brought to wear for the games other people are playing now. I'd flown out alone, just as I had for the week before. I didn't mind winning without my family, but I sure wish they'd been there when I lost. I could have used a hug.
And yes, it was agonizing. My biggest mistake was downloading Mark Twain's Autobiography to my Kindle, which he wanted published 100 years after his death. It came out in late 2010, but I was thinking it was 2011 For some reason my brain focused on that for too long and ultimately tripped me up.
I know the rules The wrong answer has to be completely crossed out and the right answer has to be legible. You have 30 seconds. No more, no less. As soon as the pen ran out and the music stopped, I knew good and well I'd gotten it wrong, and one of the most disappointing moments of my life was broadcast on national television. The show was taped on December 19 and it was towards the end of January before I finally stopped mentally trying to cross out "Samuel" on a daily basis.
I think the recent "Ibernian" FJ answer instead of "Iberian" comes close to this. I definitely know how that guy felt.
There was a brush fire in Wilmington, and while apologizing to viewers who'd tuned in to watch me go for my third win on Jeopardy!, the news anchors said this was a serious fire and it was more important. (At the time it was 90% contained with no damage or injuries reported, but hey, it's a fire). I assume most people tivoed the show anyway. I apologize to everybody in Wilmington who stayed up to 2 am to watch me lose. And for the record, I did not set the fire in hopes of preventing my hometown from seeing me go down in flames. Figuratively speaking, of course.
I still haven't seen it. Not sure if I want to. Living through it was hard enough.
But nobody feels sorry for me, least of all me. I won nearly as much money as people get for winning Fear Factor and I didn't have to swallow anything disgusting or jump off a building. And it was fun all the way up to the end.
As far as knowing the Plain White Ts song--I spent the better part of a year listening to "Hey, There Delilah" on the radio as I drove my daughter to school. I always found the song kind of depressing as I was sure Delilah would dump the singer, or the singer would meet someone else and dump Delilah. It's what always happens when you're young and in a long distance relationship. I also am old enough to remember the wrong answer--the Tom Jones song "Delilah" from 1968. That song is way more interesting--"She stood there laughing. I felt the knife in my hands and she laughed no more...Why, why, why, Delilah?"
Amazing how Tom Jones could make a song about killing your girlfriend a top 40 hit.
Okay, my 22 minutes are up. I have a marathon to train for.

Because it was Tom Freakin' Jones!!! The women sure swooned for him in the day (and some probably still do).Judy5cents wrote:Amazing how Tom Jones could make a song about killing your girlfriend a top 40 hit.
I wonder if "Delilah" was preceded by or followed "Green Green Grass of Home" -- a morbid pairing, if you stop and think about it.
But, basically, congrats Judy. You did splendidly up there. I know the end was frustrating, but you've still done yourself proud. And you can wear that Champion badge long after the money is gone and forgotten.

Hi, Judy. It's Mike, here (and don't worry about forgetting my name, you had a lot on your brain that day, obviously). And I was more than glad to give any solace I could that morning.
Having been through the process, I, too, know that hollow feeling that comes after the game ends, a cab is quickly called, and you take your change of clothes and regrets back to your hotel room (the least they could do is pay for your cab!). You don't feel very special at all, it's true. I can't imagine having to do that on my own, either. Double tough.
I think we should start a support group to help fellow ex-contestants deal with the post-Jeopardy! stress disorder that inevitably follows, sometimes for months. I know I couldn't watch the game at all for quite some time, and it was even difficult to talk about it, as much as people wanted to hear all about it. Somehow, it's much easier now that the show is actually coming up and I'm hearing how psyched people are to see me on the show. Heck, 25 people are coming over to my house next Monday to take it all in with me and my wife, which kinda blows my mind. It reminds me how special an honour it was to be included in the select few who actually get to be under the lights.
Bottom line — you're a Jeopardy! champ, Judy, two times over, and no one can take that away from you. And the money doesn't hurt either, LOL. Good luck with that marathon!

I think it was Trevor who negged with just "Delilah" (unless I marked my scoresheet wrong - can't check the DVR because I already erased it).Volante wrote:I think she was BMS'd...or possibly Alex paused before ruling her wrong...but I'm going off memory here.jkbrat wrote:But "Delilah" isn't really incorrect, more like just incomplete (and a very anticipatable incomplete, at that).MarkBarrett wrote:I messed up Delilah and the FJ clue. For the song I said just, "Delilah" and as soon as the contestant was ruled incorrect I knew what I needed to add.
Seems like a good candidate for a BMS, n'est-ce pas? (Oh, sorry - still off on a French-speaking Caribbean island this morning ...)
But, regardlesss, I retract my earlier comment about it deserving a BMS based on learning from Judy (thanks!) that "Delilah" all by itself is actually a different song, and therefore incorrect.

Yeah, just not that one. He's a bit older, and a bit blacker. A lot, actually. But good sleuth work. And, no, that isn't my Heisman trophy, either. I think it's Reggie Bush's … Go Buffs!

Well, the definition of continent is subject to debate. Geologically speaking, no, of course it isn't. As a grouping of countries (not especially more arbitrary than "Europe" or "South America"), sure, why not?Vanya wrote:Tell it to the morons who think Oceania is a continent.marpocky wrote:

Re: Monday, April 16, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
So here's a silly question, but one I've never seen addressed. This is the second time recently that someone has mentioned being called a cab and leaving right after finishing their last episode. I never thought about that person having to carry all their belongings with them, including multiple changes of clothes. So what if losing players wish to stick around in the studio and watch additional game(s), which Doug mentioned doing recently? Do you have to sit in the audience holding your extra clothes? Or will they leave them in the green room for you to pick up later whenever you actually leave?
Congratulations to you Judy on a great run and thanks for the post. We here love hearing behind-the-scenes stories. That had to be a heartbreaking way to lose, and I'm sure we all feel for you.
I'm now picturing Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, both carrying their extra outfits, (I presume they changed clothes in between the two games) sharing a cab ride to the airport after their humiliating loss to Watson. I believe the IBM facility where those shows were taped was somewhere in upstate new york, so that was probably a long cab ride.

I sat in the audience with my little suitcase after being escorted to the green room to gather everything. I'm sure I violated all kinds of fire codes by sitting it in the aisle.jeff6286 wrote:So here's a silly question, but one I've never seen addressed. Re: Monday, April 16, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
You know, strangely I can't actually remember (though it has been five months now.) My game was the 3rd, right before lunch, and I had nothing else to do, no vehicle, no friends & family with me, and no knowledge of LA, so I asked Corina if I could come back and watch the afternoon games, and where closeby to get some lunch. I think I had my stuff in the tote bag they give you. My extra clothing was just 2 or 3 shirts, so the hangers took up more space than the clothing. So yeah, I guess once you lose, you have to take your stuff, but you do get to watch the rest of the shows that day if you want, from the "friends & family" part of the audience.jeff6286 wrote:So here's a silly question, but one I've never seen addressed. This is why, when I get The Call, the first person I'm inviting (and knowing him, he'll come in a heartbeat) is my cousin who lives in Pasadena and has a PhD in some futuristic engineering field (yes, he is basically one of the Big Bang Theory characters). Better to get a ride in a car than a cab! (Although I'm still contemplating driving out to LA when The Call comes (estimate a four day drive) rather than flying, as I so love road trips, so we may have our car there to use as well.)

Yes, we do have that in common, don't we? I have driven to California (by way of the Dakotas, Montana & Utah) and would drive there again in a heartbeat. But this year, I already have 6 road trips planned (only one of which will take me across the Mississippi (along with one that will take me to it, but not to the other side (at least not as yet planned))), so it'll have to be another time.dhkendall wrote: I so love road trips.

We've taken several road trips to the *source* of the Mississippi - so in a sense, yes, we drove to it, but not to the other side, we had to walk across the Big Muddy to get there! (Quite the interesting site, if any of you ever get to northern Minnesota.)
