Alex: Compound miter, or just a straight miter?
Erika: Oh, compound miter. You betcha.
Alex: All right. Are you good at it, though?
Erika: Emphasis on the--
Alex: Are you good at crown moldings?

Cindy: Well, I don't like to hurt any little critters, so I, like, you know, brake for butterflies and stuff like that. So I was driving down the road in the middle of nowhere, and there was a snake in the road, so I swerved to miss the snake, and I didn't realize that there was brush, and I went--the front wheels of my car went over a little cliff, and we just kind of hung there, and the snake turned out to be a piece of rubber trim off a car. It wasn't even a real snake.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
WEBSITES
VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place.
Jacob: Wager $8,201 to cover Cindy.
Cindy: You're faced with a legitimate choice in strategy. You can either choose to cover Erika, hoping that you give the correct response and Jacob doesn't, in which case you'll want to wager $3,401 to cover Erika's doubled score, but no more than $7,400 if you want to top Jacob on a Triple Stumper; or bet up to $2,799 and win if both Jacob and Erika miss Final.
Erika: If you think Cindy is going to wager to cover you, try wagering less than $600 to beat Jacob and Cindy on the Triple Stumper; or, if you think Cindy is going to wager small in hopes of a Triple Stumper, wager between $2,801 (venusian, to top a $0 wager by Cindy) and $6,200 (martian, which may win in some cases but may also risk dropping you from second to third place if you get Final wrong).

Embarrassed to admit this, but I've never even heard of Groupon. And no, TPH has not hijacked my sn.
Re: Wednesday, April 25, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
Thought the Seal category would get my at least something given my affinity for aquatic life, but I just couldn't make heads or flippers of the clues:
* I forget the name of the park, but it didn't sound remotely familiar or Orlando-esque.
* When Central Park Zoo came up, my thought process: "Oh, that zoo in Central Park. What's it called?"
* Was thinking calligraphy on the seal with the brush, but the fact that it was Chinese had me thinking it might be something else.
* The other two just named towns I'd never heard of before or something.
Strawberry jam is more obvious than any other berry? News to me.
Also, what the hell is Groupon?

I hadn't heard of it either, until that godawful Super Bowl ad a couple of years ago. Because of that, instaget FJ.thenextofken wrote:Embarrassed to admit this, but I've never even heard of Groupon. And no, TPH has not hijacked my sn.
Another promising champ bites the dust. Oh well, I was hoping she'd last for a while.

Re: Wednesday, April 25, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
I love how Jimmy does the "sciency" question on the Mexican Jumping Bean in front of these diagrams of DNA and such, because he is doing SCIENCE.
Really painful DJ round. Things felt more academic today and it showed. Oddly, I was just reading about "The Italian Girl in Algiers" today, but I couldn't tell you the first thing about it, so a pretty obscure question. As with most "short" questions, the players could benefit from a TOM to direct them.
The champ cost herself with the late DD bet. On one hand it would have made it difficult for the guy to comeback. On the other, I don't think she knew the category very well.
The FJ will be a high get rate, I suspect. I mean, what else could it be (TPH?)? The "what was the first Groupon?" was a question on WWTBAM this year, for a pretty high value if I recall correctly.

I'll actually come into TPH's defense and say that, if you live in a small town, you're not going to have Groupon most likely. But then you also don't get to see "Don Giovanni" much and yet people know that, too.

Cheerwine, on the other hand…
(Also, what was the park named in Seals for $200?)
Finally, a live weather expo in place of Wheel? Dear God, WNEM, you guys have a weather FETISH.

Re: Wednesday, April 25, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
It's a curiously unworkable business model where vendors, restaurants, etc sell massively discounted coupons under certain conditions. Say, $10 for $25 off at the tapas (don't ask, TPH) place, 1/3 off a spa day, etc. The idea is you'll buy them and never use them, and so that money you paid for the discount is split between the vendor and Groupon. Now, if you do use the coupon, the vendor is short that. Or something like that.thejeopardyfan wrote:I've heard of it, but I don't know what it is. Or you buy one for a bookstore and end up spending much more than the value of the Groupon, so they make a bit off of the extra sales. I don't know that it is enough to make up for the difference in offering the coupon.Austin Powers wrote:It's a curiously unworkable business model where vendors, restaurants, etc sell massively discounted coupons under certain conditions. Sea World. Your choices, when spotted "Sea World" are either A. Orlando; or B. San Diego. Given they were asking for a city in Florida, Orlando's your answer.TenPoundHammer wrote:

Instaget Final. Doesn't hurt that my cousin works for Groupon and the company remains headquartered in Chicago.

I have heard of Groupon, but have no idea what they do or how it works. My guess was e-bay.
TPH has never heard of San Francisco?
I thought the Cockney category was going to be a rhyme time deal and never got on track in that one.
Sorry, but I'm glad the champ lost. Her mannerisms really got on my nerves tonight.

It's called Sea World, and it is quite well known. Also, the seal in the suburb of Tokyo was more than likely writing in Japanese, not Chinese. Also, the city you'd never heard of in the $800 clue was a tiny burg called San Francisco, California. Rockport, Maine for $1,000 I would be a little more forgiving of.TenPoundHammer wrote: (Also, what was the park named in Seals for $200?)

Er... kind of. The idea is that the profit margin that the vendor sacrifices on going into the Groupon is made up by the fact that they increase their volume substantially. Instead of 10 people buying tapas from me tonight for $250 (10 x $25), 40 buy tapas from me tonight for $400 (40 x $10). This particularly benefits vendors who encounter waste if they're not "full" - eg. a hairdresser would rather have a heavily discounted appointment in their 1:00pm slot than no one at all.Austin Powers wrote:It's a curiously unworkable business model where vendors, restaurants, etc sell massively discounted coupons under certain conditions. It also encourages someone who thinks they might like tapas but isn't sure to give it a shot. I'm unlikely to give it a whirl at $25, but at $10 I'll give it a try - and maybe I'll like it so much that I'll come back for full price for the rest of the year.
Not sure how the revenue model works for Groupon but I would have to assume that they take a percentage of the total revenue garnered by the revenue that the vendor receives. Essentially, a buying group for the common man. I agree that it is a shaky business at best.

I don't remember the exact phrase "Sea World" being in $200. And whatever the path to San Fran was in $800, I had never heard of whatever was supposed to lead you there (and the contestants triple stumped it too). That's what I meant.

Maybe you receive an alternate feed of the show that is missing bits and pieces of various clues. That would explain why so many of the clues seem downright incomprehensible to you on a daily basis. Do you watch the show live, or do you have access to a DVR or VCR? A great way to learn might be to write down every clue that you fail to answer, or terms in each clue that you're not familiar with. Then you could look them up yourself and try to learn a bit about them, instead of having to ask on this board for someone to explain them to you.TenPoundHammer wrote:I don't remember the exact phrase "Sea World" being in $200. How in the heck am I expected to know that for $400?
I had never heard of this, this, and this.
What was that one thing that they mentioned in that one clue?
What the hell is groupon?
Sea World doesn't sound remotely familiar to me.
These comments/questions are incredibly annoying. I know that you know this, and you don't care, but here it is anyway.
Re: Wednesday, April 25, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
In all seriousness, what was the exact wording of that Sea World clue?
Also, I do have a DVR, but the living room was in use by my very chatty mother and her very dense friend who needs everything explained to him 26 times (cough), so I had to watch it in the bedroom.
