I eliminated sun as being too obvious, and went with the more obscure spectacled bear. Ha!

Wow- I knew the golden bear was CA state animal so had no idea it'd be extinct!
Of course, had we done this TD 90 years ago, I'd've been correct.
And the only bays I live anywhere near are on Saratoga Lake, Lake George, and Great Sacandaga Lake. :)

TreehugginCowgirl wrote: I almost said Asiatic Black Bear, but I figured "American Black Bear" being your given answer would remind everyone that there are two black bears and make it a sheep. At least I kept Austin from getting another singleton!
Yeah, I tried to disguise it somewhat with the "good old" bit. The main reason I answered American black bear is because I didn't want to have to give "Be more specific" hints to anyone who answered "black bear" - this way, I could just assume they meant to repeat my answer. Turns out there was only one other black bear entry, and he copied the entire "good old American black bear" formulation. :)

There's a lot of speculation that the "golden bear" found on the CA flag was in fact a grizzly bear based on the bone structure of the face. Since grizzlies have been driven out of much of their former range, it's not hard to believe that there was once a population of them in the Sierra.

But if you're talking sheep, wouldn't Australia be a more fitting answer? Actually, while I expected Chile to be nothing better than a safe answer, I thought Brazil was a more likely sheep when considering South America.

I thought so too. But my answer, Argentina, with just a sliver of its territory north of the Tropic, turned out to be sheepier.

Heh, good point on the sheep (I'll note that nobody guessed New Zealand...). Re: Brazil/Chile, I think I would have been more certain of the latter, actually. Brazil is large, yes, but since a fair bit of it is in the northern hemisphere, it really depends on how far south you think it extends. Is it well-known that you're out of the tropics by the time you get to Uruguay?

Anyhow, I liked the question since it has the right number of answers and none of them depend on a "luck" factor like the line hitting tiny islands. Madagascar attracting 5 people was pretty interesting.

And I was flipping a coin between Argentina and S. Africa. :(

Quick quiz: Name the largest country (by land area) completely south of the Tropic of Capricorn.

Second quick quiz: Name the largest country (by land area) in South America entirely north of the Equator.

Answer to quick quiz 1:
Spoiler
New Zealand. The only other qualifying country is Uruguay.
Answer to quick quiz 2:
Spoiler
France. Or Venezuela if you don't like the trick question aspect of how this is phrased.

The same reasoning that makes
Spoiler
French Guiana part of France
also makes
Spoiler
Réunion and Mayotte (two other French overseas departments) part of France
- but they're south of the equator.

Is this a “My name is George, I’m unemployed and live with my parents" type of thing you're trying to remember? :P

The opposite of that. :) :)

(My first thought to the question: "Nicholas II". ""Wait, that's too well known. I'll be smart and subtract an I. Zig when I'm expected to zag. Think *different*."

Next time, I'll have the tuna salad - and get my ass kicked again. :) (Because, of course, the even numbered TDs, everyone else realized what a mess thiinking differently was, and will also answer the "obvious" choice. There's no way to win, is there?)
