I said The History Boys as well. The 2005 date sounded about right (turns out it came to Broadway in 2006) and I was pretty sure it took place at a school. That Championship Season occurred to me as well, but that involves a reunion, so it didn't really fit.

I saw the play with Cherry Jones. Much better than the movie, even with Meryl Streep replacing her. Obviously this was an easy one for me.

My bad. Hard to tell someone's sex when you only know them by their forum nickname.

I came up with another group of "boys", The Jersey Boys. Turns out it opened on Broadway in 2005 as well.

I thought of Jersey Boys, but dismissed it without a second thought figuring that it took place in New Jersey. I couldn't come up with anything other than Hairspray.

The clue specifically asked for a play, which rules out both Hairspray and Jersey Boys.

Hairspray's opening number is titled "Good Morning Baltimore". If that helps :) Also, both of those are musicals, not plays.

I too offered Jersey Boys, hoping their parents got some kind of deal in NYC at that particular private school or something. Oh well. Would not have gotten Doubt without a lot more TOMs.(Like Alex's post-thinkmusic pre-clue-reveal-amble.)

Bamaman wrote:Other than this show, I have never heard of that play or the movie. Given the name of the clue, I wrote down Santa Claus just to have something.

I thought the new champ bet too small on the DD. The scores were :

$9,700
$7,800
$5,400

There was one $2,000 clue left on the board. While his bet of $3,000 gets him into second place, he can still be passed if she gets the last clue. He is within striking distance of first, but he would need to get the last one right. He is out of contention is he misses the DD, so he might as well go all in (or all but a dollar) and hope he can hang on to first through the last clue, which he wouldn't have, but that's beside the point.
My thoughts were that he did still leave himself a lot of ways to win with that bet, whether he was right or wrong on the DD. He still had a chance to take the lead if he got the final 2000 clue, and if Jacob got the final clue, he would retake the lead anyway even if Joel did make it a true DD. The wager he made also left himself at least some chance to win if he missed the DD, which he would not have had if he had bet all or nearly all of his 5400. Looking at all the different possibilities...

If he misses, then the scores are 9700, 7800, 2400. If he gets the last clue to jump to 4800, then he still has a chance to win, and likely would have with his sole get on FJ. If Cindy gets the last clue, then the leaders are 9800-9700, which would likely mean that Jacob becomes a 4-day champion if Cindy makes the shutout bet and Jacob bets low enough to lock out Joel. If Jacob gets the final 2000 clue, which he did, then the scores are 11700-7800-2400, and Joel has no chance to win with proper wagering. If the final 2000 clue is a TS, then Joel should be unable to win in FJ, if Cindy bets to keep him locked out, however, he would be able to top Jacob on the sole get if he makes the MSB, so it would come down to Cindy's wager whether she or Joel was the winner.

So while his chances to win were still pretty slim if he lost 3000 on the DD, they were still better than if he dropped to 0, and since he couldn't be assured of the lead with that last 2000 still on the board, he didn't have all that much to be gained by betting an additional 2400 on the DD. I certainly wouldn't claim that someone was making a mistake by going TDD in that spot, but looking at all the possible outcomes, I don't think his wager was bad at all, and may have actually been quite shrewd.

If I had known that, I would have had, instead of Hairspray... nothing.

On the other hand, I am sure that students in Brooklyn always sing, longingly, about Baltimore.

It hasn't quite caught up to Pygmalion as FJ fodder, but give it time; it got a late start.

They give you the "what" or the "who" (and have you write it in). They do not give you the "is" or the "are."

It was an exciting finish to watch a regular play game and have no idea if Jacob reached a 4th win or not since I avoided this message board after leaving for work this morning. When Alex said Jacob wrote his response quickly then I thought the champ had prevailed. Part of me is happy he lost since not getting Laura Ingalls Wilder is near unforgivable.

Thank you for saving me the work of the digging up the previous relevant FJ clues. In '06 I was clueless. In '09 I had an instaget to get one half.

The movie version of Doubt is all that I have since seen and it's good thanks to the performers. I would call it a solid rental well worth viewing.

The S'MOORS category had good clues worth taking a second look at for those looking to learn key show material.

Savannah Smiles neg bait? Ha! Those of you who saw my relevant Facebook post/picture a few months back would know that was an easy thousand. By coincidence I had eaten two of those cookies one minute before tonight's episode. Usually I would long be out of stock by now of the cookies, but thanks to my down time I have a small bit of inventory remaining. Five clues and no Tagalongs? Boo!

My precalls for the FJ clue were of course Pygmalion and to add one more I had Death of a Salesman.

It was the memory of Christine's game that gave me pause in guessing Doubt. But I figured it fit well, and I didn't have anything better, so I stuck with it.

I've got no problem with "What Doubt" being adjudged a question. If someone says, "It'll help you with your doubt," and you deny having any, you say, "What doubt!?" If someone says, "You know that feeling where you have misgivings about something?" you might reply, "What, doubt?" The rule is to phrase responses in the form of a question, not to phrase them grammatically correctly, in such a way that the clue could be an accurate answer to the question. If there was an edit when Joel's response was revealed, I doubt (ha!) the cutting room floor has any quibbling over whether his phrasing was acceptable. I was beaten by "What a sniper?" and everything progressed smoothly during that reveal.

Alex said he struggled - maybe he had trouble getting the words in before time ran out.
Austin Powers wrote:...The History Boys, where there is no doubt at all about the pedophilia (in fact you are left with the uncomfortable sense that your teacher grabbing your crotch on a bike is just the thing teachers do).
And more to the point, it takes place in England...

Not only does the musical Jersey Boys take place (at least in part) in New Jersey, it's about the career of the 4 Seasons - it doesn't spend time with their schooling......

A tough game, I thought. I just learned earlier today that Elizabeth Banks is the woman who's been playing Alec Baldwin's wife on 30 Rock - but I still couldn't come up with her name on time tonight....Pleased about FJ, though...saw the play off and again on Broadway...and the movie too.

For 25 minutes, it was like Teen/celeb week never ended. I can't remember the last time I got 25 right in DJ during a regular game. Too bad that momentum didn't carry over into FJ. Completely stumped (everything I thought of was a friggin' musical), then immediately remembered the previous Doubt FJ after Joel's answer was revealed. I remember reading all about it after missing that FJ; too bad I didn't remember any of that. What a disaster.

Another Monday, another missed FJ. Meh.
