Re: Friday, June 1, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
Agreed - I was all set to instantly say "Yucatan" with the fact that "Mexican peninsula" is usually Pavlov for "Yucatan", but then I realized the cities given (forget which, but it was the second one in particular) were on the Baja California peninsula, and switched in time. But you'd have to know your Mexican cities to get that one, methinks.TenPoundHammer wrote:Anyone wanna tell me how I'd know that one Mexico clue to be Baja and not Yucatan? Mexico + Peninsula is usually pavlovian for Yucatan, is it not?
Unfortunately, total loss on FJ, as I couldn't help but think that "sylvain" was French for "of the woods", so was stuck trying to think of something that fit there.
In penance, I'll relay a favourite joke of mine:
There are two guys who have been lost in the desert for weeks, and they're at death's door. As they stumble on, hoping for salvation in the form of an oasis or something similar, they suddenly spy, through the heat haze, a small tree off in the distance.
As they get closer, they can see that the tree is draped with rasher upon rasher of bacon. There's smoked bacon, crispy bacon, life-giving juicy nearly-raw bacon, all sorts. And the smell... oh, the glorious smell!"
"Look Pepe," says the first man. "It's a bacon tree!"
"You're right!" says Pepe, "We're saved!"
Pepe doesn't wait another second. He runs up to the tree salivating at the prospect of food. But just as he gets to within five feet of the tree, there's the sound of machine gun fire, and he is shot down in a hail of bullets.
His friend quickly drops down on the sand, and calls across to the dying Pepe.
"Pepe!! Pepe!! What on earth happened?"
And with his dying breath Pepe calls back: "Ugh, run, run!! It's not a Bacon Tree after all..."
"...its a ham bush!"

Yucatan for me, but I would have rebounded Baja if beat to the buzzer.
Both Godot and Iceman in Play Characters sounded like previous FJ clues. John only bet 800 on that DD and he was reluctant to finally go to French Films. We got a sense what he didn't like. I wonder what his wheelhouse was?
Word Origins will never be my wheelhouse. 4/4 for the week and that comes up? Oh well, 80% isn't bad. Bombardment was my guess to have something on the paper with "sneak" the first thing to come to me.
Truffaut for $2000 was fine for my scoresheet, but I was expecting a Godard/Belmondo/Breathless. Maybe I'll get it at the WQC tomorrow.
Claudia has a spoiler on her FB page? Wow, that is definitely a no-no.

I think someone on here said a staff member told them they lurk here. This could be trouble.
Anyone find it a little odd someone goes to contestant's Facebook pages?
It only says how many games she plays, it does not give any details about any clues or anything that happened in the games. (At least not yet).

I must say, you make a very good point here. "Rapidly moving" rather than "moving rapidly" would have been an easy fix.TenPoundHammer wrote:
The "swift" clue seemed a little awkwardly worded, as if it were suggesting a gerund instead of an adjective.
In FJ, I instantly called "guetapens" and was astonished it was not what they wanted.

I don't suppose it's that odd that somebody would go to a contestant's FB page. I have googled contestants in the past for various reasons. I might have landed on a Facebbok page of one of them if I were inclined to be using Facebook.Bamaman wrote:I think someone on here said a staff member told them they lurk here. It only says how many games she plays, it does not give any details about any clues or anything that happened in the games. (At least not yet).
And, saying how many games she played is the same as saying how many games she won. Well, with very little math ability, one should be able to subtract 1 from the former to arrive at the latter.
Oh, and I know at least one official Jeopardy! person lurks here. He told me so himself.

Alex didn't say "President," he simply said "No."bpmod wrote:I would say "nice song" is a great understatement. I have never added it to my repertoire, but I really should. I have another Jim Croce story which is kinda funny in a coincidence sorta way.Budphrey wrote:I got a pleasant little frisson from that clue. "Thursday" was actually in my rotation of songs when I was trying to be a coffeehouse folk singer back in college. For better or worse, that enterprise withered for lack of venues in Boise, Idaho (and I didn't have a car to try and tour the region). But it's still a nice song.TenPoundHammer wrote:How did I not get that Jim Croce clue with "I Got a Name" staring me in the face? Shame on me.
I will have to play it back, but, whatever it was, there was no way (other than the correct response being correct) to distinguish between the incorrect and correct responses. It definitely didn't mention re-election or anything like that. But his response made me infer that.Budphrey wrote:If I recall correctly, Alex said "1976" when he negged the "Carter" response. I've already erased the DVR recording; did the clue mention running for re-election or anything like that? Otherwise "1976" wouldn't be sufficient to distinguish Ford from Carter, as they were running against each other that year.bpmod wrote:OK, did anybody else give a big "WTF?" when Alex negged 'Carter' with the single word 'President'?
Brian
The clue "He's making us proud again," seemed to me obviously about an incumbent. What could Carter have done to make us proud? His slogan would have to be "He'll make us proud again." The Ford slogan is odd since it slights the subject's predecessor of the same party, but is anyone surprised that was done in this case?
Another "guerilla" here, but I knew it was Spanish. Could not come up with likely French vocabulary, or English words for attack for that matter...If "ambush" is from French, why doesn't it mean to hit somebody in the mouth...??

I will have to check my recording as soon as my computer is finished doing what it's in the midst of. But I know it was not a simple "no". I would not have had any reaction to that other than knowing I lost the coin-flip.davey wrote:Alex didn't say "President," he simply said "No." "

Edit: The 'Carter' response was met with a simple 'no', but after the correct response, Alex re-iterated '1976', which I took (at the time) to mean that they were obviously looking for somebody who ran in 1976 (as if Carter hadn't), 'causing my disbelief. But now that I re-read the clue, it does indeed appear to be asking for an incumbent, or at least it would seem to be asking for somebody who had done something to "make us* proud". Of course Carter could have done (and my limited knowledge of him would point toward him doing) something "to make us* proud" as Guv'nuh of Jo'ja.
*I also realize that I am not included in that 'us'.
