I wasn't very surprised when the champion said that he wanted to pursue a career in opera.

For once, I was looking forward to a wordplay category...so of course they avoided Zodiac rhymes like it's on fire.
LTaM warning sounded, down 800 (or was it 1200)...and you head for the top of the category? Why do contestants keep doing that?
FJ went something like this:
*think music starts*
........
.......
.......
..............
..............
*3 seconds to go*
#^@!% err...Mada...gascar...whatever
*think music ends*
It's like my brain stopped working for 29.5 seconds. *shrug* I'll take it.

Yeah, the guy with the lead goes to the bottom of a category and the trailer goes to the top of the Zodiac.
I did not know Madagascar was French. But it is an island and likely became independent post WWII. So I decided to go with it since I had no other ideas. Sometimes you get lucky, something you need when you are 0-4 for the week and desperate.

After Sally's performance in the J! round I was ready to make her the favorite for the next ToC. I was surprised that she fell apart the way that she did.
For the most part I liked this board. There were a few not so great clues but it felt like the writers really tried with it.
FJ was basically an instant get. I ran down the list of the ten largest islands in the world and figured that the correct response had to be on that list, and I felt confident that Madagascar was the only independent country on it and was French speaking.

Re: Friday, June 15, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
I thought Haiti at first, then remembered they shared their island with the Dominican Republic. Started thinking of large islands and they were either not independent or French speaking, until I hit Madagascar. I wasn't entirely sure what they spoke there, but I knew they were independent, and I knew the languages of the other large islands I could think of, so that's about as much sussing as I've ever done for an FJ.
Too bad I paused the DVR at the bump-bump and took extra time to get to it. I just wanted to see if I could get there on my own, before being spoiled. So that's a miss.
Pat Sajak supplants Alex as my favorite game show host. Local Hero rocks!

There's a Gulf of California?!
Boards were pretty good. Even with a few hammerhouses I didn't 0/5 anything, which is rare.
No clue on FJ! as usual. Couldn't think of any island nation that would have to do with France — I know nothing about Madagascar except that a rather fruity cartoon lemur comes from it.
Funnily, I was actually thinking about the Madagascar film franchise during a commercial break.

Then what do you call the water east of Baja Peninsula?TenPoundHammer wrote:There's a Gulf of California?!
I got final after about 15 seconds, saw Haiti as immediate negbait (people may disagree with me), but the obvious part is its not an independent island.

Haiti came out earlier as French-speaking, so I went to Africa and started the wrong way and ran out of time. HA!

Nice job by David not to let the Beatrice/Much Ado About Nothing blunder ruin his game. I can understand why he missed the last DD. I had no idea Ryne Sandberg was an Illinois poet laureate either. Oh, it was Carl Sandburg? Well, no excuse on his part then.
I like the pop culture clues as much as anyone, but when Sally darted over to Celebrities' Favorite Movies that often can point to someone who may have a letdown in other parts of the round.
For the FJ clue I knew Madagascar was big, independent and that French is an official language. If the clue had asked me to spell the capital or name a color on the flag that would have been a bigger challenge.
I am no astrology fan, but for J! I don't mind the zodiac categories since it's usually easy money. We didn't see three clues. Let's say they were:
$800: This early August lion likes to vacation in Brazil
$1200: This late June crab is known to cut a rug
$1600: The early April ram enjoys the logan types of these fruits

I knew Carl Sandburg = Illinois poet entirely because there's a Sandburg Mall in Galesburg. Not a very prosperous mall.

FJ instaget, spent 30 seconds thinking of any way it could NOT be Madagascar. Carl Sandburg should be Pavlovian for Illinois poet.

I would never have pegged him as a baritone. Bass all the way.
