8 right in the first round. 9 in DJ. FJ stumped me. I was thinking Shakespeare characters and not Holmes and Watson. I have read Holmes before. So I was ashamed at that.

Nailed FJ off the clue.

Disappointed that 2x4 was timed out. ('Twas hoping to see if Metallica, Van Halen, and Boys II Men were among the quartets listed).

FJ (or one might say, the Final Problem) was an instaget before Alex finished reading the clue.

I instantly came up with Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, since those are the only literary characters from London that I know.

Yep, same here. I fist-pumped when my wild guess was right. Pretty easy board overall, although the Languages category was harder than I was expecting.

Losing by $1 has to hurt.

With three wins & $69,102, David moves into eighth place in the 2011-13 ToC standings.

More than by any other amount?

Brian
...but the senator, while insisting he was not intoxicated, could not explain his nudity.

If I had 50 cents for every math question I got right, I'd have $6.30 by now.

He could have wagered to lose by almost any abitrary amount he chose. Would you?

I wish that when the clue is looking for Pete Townshend's band, the contestant would ask, "Who?" Just once.

You are seriously overanalyzing a one-line flippant comment.

I'm not analyzing anything. Just making a statement and asking a question.

I wasn't even thinking of the wager when I wrote that, just noting how it must have sucked to go all in and still lose by a buck. I have no opinion on your question.

But wasn't the wager "go[ing] all in"?

It is clear (now) that you just wanted to see your words in print, not that you wanted to invite dialog by those words. Oh well.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. He went all in (bet everything) and lost by a dollar. Must have been frustrating. The end.

Losing by a dollar isn't frustrating in that situation, it's almost expected.
A frustrating loss is when you get FJ right but only bet enough to cover the leader if he misses while making his ideal cover bet, but you come up short when it turns out he did actually offer you the tie, finishing with exactly double your score. (I think that makes sense- if I had the Final figures/ wagers I could've made it more clear.)

Pre FJ Scores:
Spoiler
David Menchaca: 17300
Neil Ashar: 14400
Karen Griffin: $7000
I think the 'frustrating loss" situation wouldn't apply, since Neil has more than 2/3 of David's score. Nevermind, it would be "frustrating" if Neil bet $399 and David only bet $11500

This was, of course, the very common "suicide wager from 2nd", which usually ends up in a loss by a margin of one dollar. I don't think anybody can be "frustrated" losing by a dollar in that situation when he/she could have maximized his/her potential of winning instead of maximizing potential (but much less likely) winnings.
