CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: I'm curious about something that happened in Victoria Steinberg's life. It says here that you went to an all-boys high school?
Victoria: Yes, I did.
Alex: How did that happen?
Victoria: Uh, there was a court case. It's a special school in New York City, and there was a court case 'cause it was all boys, and they had to admit women, and--well, girls--and there were 200 of us out of 2,800 students.
Alex: 200 out of 2,800?
Victoria: Right.
Alex: That's 14:1 ratio.
Victoria: Yes.
Alex: I can do the math.
Victoria: Right.
Alex: Curt Renshaw from Washington, D.C. You and I have met before?
Curt: We have. Uh, 1994, in the Arabian--Persian Gulf, uh, you flew out to our ship to do a USO meet-and-greet, and, uh...
Alex: It was a frigate?
Curt: It was a cruiser.
Alex: Cruiser?
Curt: It was a cruiser. And it was about 110 degrees. And, uh, came up to the bridge where I had the deck, and--and you actually drove the ship to pick up a simulated man-overboard. [Speaks indistinctly]
Alex: Yeah, and that ship moves. And it leans, believe me. That was fun.
Alex: David Menchaca is our champion. Met the President of Estonia.
David: Yeah. Quite by accident.
Alex: Oh, good, I thought you might have been in trouble or something.
David: No. Um, I was on a choir tour um, with my choral side in college.
Alex: Mm-hmm.
David: And we were going into this old stone church to check it out, and his entourage just emerged from this old stone church, and we got to meet with him. Um, he's a very nice guy. He was actually born in, uh, New Jersey.
Alex: Yeah, accidental meetings like that are a lot of fun. It takes the security guides--guys by surprise, and they--they all get uptight real fast, but that's okay.
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
NBA MVPS $800: 1971:
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
(Curt: Who are the Lakers?)

Re: Tuesday, June 19, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
IRON MAN (3/5) (The first category is missing comething we had in the first round - it's missing a comma...)
I HOPS (4/5) (Next, a category in which each response will be two words...)
AUTHORS (5/5)
ITALIAN FOOD (4/5, including 1 correct Daily Double) (With clues from Eataly, the NYC marketplace, we'll deal with...)
THE CELEBRITY TWEETS (4/4)
A CITY ON THE WATER (5/5, including 1 correct Daily Double) (You have to identify the body of water for each city.)
THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
David: 11 R (including 1 DD), 1 W
Victoria: 7 R, 0 W
Curt: 7 R (including 1 rebound and 1 DD), 2 W
Clues revealed: 29
Triple Stumpers: 4
Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $6,400
FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Curt snagged the next Daily Double on the 10th clue. David had $5,400, Curt had $7,900, and Victoria was at $7,200. Curt wagered $3,000.
A CITY ON THE WATER $2000: Shelburne,
Vermont
SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was David who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 15th clue. David had $8,200, Curt had $10,900, and Victoria was at $7,200. David wagered $2,500.
ITALIAN FOOD $2000: (Sarah of the Clue Crew stands with a pizza baker at Eataly in New York City as he prepares a pizza.) Naples is famous for pizza, including this simple but delicious one named for the queen who visited the city in 1889
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
ITALIAN FOOD $1200: (Sarah of the Clue Crew watches a pizza baker toss dough at Eataly in New York City.) Tossing dough rather than rolling it makes for a lighter, airier crust, plus it'll make you feel like a real one of these, Italian for pizza baker.
IRON MAN $1200: Wrestling champ & medicine ball inventor William Muldoon shared this nickname with the winner at Waterloo
(Curt: What is Wellington?)
(Alex: Wellington's nickname was [*].)
IRON MAN $2000: Nickname of Oscar Cody, famous for his tears in a public service announcement
(Curt: What is the Iron Indian?)
(Alex: Who is [*] Cody - remember the little tear coming down? Worried about the environment.)
I HOPS $2000: ...to the front of a word referring to a fixed charge, making it an angry adjective
SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
David: $12,700
Victoria: $11,200
Curt: $10,900
FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
FABRICS
VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place. Stratton's Dilemma.
David: Wager $9,701 to cover Victoria.
Victoria: You ought to wager to cover Curt, but since you cannot win on a Triple Stumper if you do so, you ought to choose between wagering $0 or maximizing your winnings with a bet of all $11,200. You are in Stratton's Dilemma, calling for a wager of more than $10,600 (to shut out Curt) or less than $8,200 (risking the possibility of being passed from behind by Curt). Go with the smaller bet if you believe a Triple Stumper is more likely than a singleton miss by David.
Curt: You ought to try wagering between $301 and $7,900. This will top a $0 wager by Victoria while still beating David and Victoria on the Triple Stumper (should David wager to cover Victoria's doubled score and Victoria wager to cover your doubled score).
FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
The name of this fabric includes the initials of the city where it was introduced at a World's Fair site
FINAL SCORES
Curt: $10,900 + $9,000 = $19,900 (What is nylon) (3rd place: $1,000)
Victoria: $11,200 + $11,000 = $22,200 (What is Nylon?) (2nd place: $2,000)
David: $12,700 + $9,701 = $22,401 (What is Nylon?) (4-day champion: $91,503)
Total Potential Lach Trash: $11,400
GAME DYNAMICS
CORYAT SCORES
David: $12,200, 20 R (including 1 DD), 2 W
Victoria: $11,200, 11 R, 1 W
Curt: $9,800, 18 R (including 2 DDs), 3 W
Combined Coryat: $33,200
BATTING AVERAGES
David: 21/59 = .356
Curt: 19/60 = .317
Victoria: 12/58 = .207
Team: 52/63 = .825
MISCELLANEOUS INTERESTING CLUES
AMERICAN YEARBOOK $800: Team 6 of this elite fighting unit killed Osama bin Laden in 2011
(Alex: Yep, got in there ahead of the Navy man, Curt. You'll never live that down, buddy.)
(Curt: No, I won't.)
THE NAME ON THE AIRPORT $1000: This Italian city's airport is named for native son Galileo Galilei
(David: What is Florence?)
SEEING SHADES OF RED $600: Start your wine-ing, it's a former kingdom, duchy and province
AUTHORS $2000: Last name of author Francine, or what she writes in novels like "Household Saints"
[applause for Victoria's domination of the category]
ITALIAN FOOD $400: (Sarah of the Clue Crew helps make cheese at Eataly in New York City.) Here in New York they use cow's milk, but in Campagna traditionally mozzarella is made from the milk of this animal, which many Italian kids believe lays eggs
ITALIAN FOOD $800: (Sarah of the Clue Crew makes pasta at Eataly in New York City.) Roman cuisine is known for being down-to-earth. Thursday is the day for this filling dish, and you can even practice your Italian by giving us the full name
ITALIAN FOOD $1600: (Sarah of the Clue Crew shows us ice cream at Eataly in New York City.) Frozen treats have been a favorite in Italy since at least around 1600, and just as small U.S. towns have an ice cream parlor, every Italian town has this equivalent establishment
IRON MAN $1600: Gotz with the iron hand, real-life hero of one of this "Faust" author's plays, had a hand shot off in battle
(David: Who is Marlowe?)
I HOPS $400: ...into a word meaning "distant" to make it a county exhibition
(David: What is fair? [pause] Or far?)
(Alex: [*] - we need both words.)
THE CELEBRITY TWEETS $1600: Mr. Sulu , phasers on stunning: "I'm going to violate Leviticus by wearing a cotton/ polyester blend"

Re: Tuesday, June 19, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
Really just a lovely FJ, and glad everyone was able to piece it together and get it. Also a very nicely paced game, as everyone moved question to question without too much hopping around or saying um like the middle guy yesterday.
Awfully sad performance in the NBA category there, though. I guess Derrick Rose was the $1000 for a reason. Though I am not surprised to see the miss on Kareem.
I said Soloflex for the exercise equipment, as I don't keep track of the parent companies of informercial-promoted exercise systems.
Clue Crew was almost tolerable this time; I'm not sure why "pizza maker" or the full name for gnocchi is an easier question than a famous pizza named for a woman, but hey.
I still think they could be more TOMmy in their word play categories. "Fixed charge" makes me think of an ion or something - I think "another word for speed" would have led the contestants to "rate" more readily.
I think the middle guy regrets not betting more aggressively in the bodies of water (isn't he a navy guy?) and the lady on the end for going to the $1200 instead of the $2000 clue late in celebrity tweets. But hey it's not my money.
Nice win by the champ, he just seems all around steady, not the deepest knowledge base but enough in all areas that he can resist most all challengers.

Re: Tuesday, June 19, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
I kicked lots of ass in this game until Final Jeopardy, on which I had no friggin' clue. It's even worse since I live in New York, but I aways think of the "initials" of this city as NYC, not NY. Probably wouldn't have gotten it anyway.
Major props to Victoria, I had written her off after the first half of J, but she figured out her buzzer timing. Another great victory for David - it's awful fun watching you work!
Can't believe Derrick Rose was a stand and stare, though. Nobody reads the sports pages anymore?

I think the middle guy regrets not betting more aggressively in the bodies of water (isn't he a navy guy?) and the lady on the end for going to the $1200 instead of the $2000 clue late in celebrity tweets. But hey it's not my money.
Bowflex...I used to watch a lot of late night TV, and the old infomercial was on constantly.
When Victoria went for that 1200 clue, I almost screamed at my TV, before remembering that contestants do this all the time, and just shrugged.
Instaget FJ. The clue practically screamed NY -> nylon.

FJ had me first thinking of world's fair sites, then finding immediate success upon switching to simply listing various fabrics.

Oh yes, and Alex's Kanye impression should win some sort of award.

BTW I would assume the champ is in the TOC now. If I were him I would spend less time getting jerked around by some law firm over the summer and more time studying for the TOC.

Why don't you blame hometown mental block, of which I have often been a victim. This one was a late pull, making me feel all the more triumphant. I did know about Grover Whalen unveilin' the Trylon at the World's Fair, but didn't associate nylon with it. In any case, the Wikipedia article strongly indicates that New York has nothing to do with the naming of the material.zakharov wrote:I kicked lots of ass in this game until Final Jeopardy, on which I had no friggin' clue. It's even worse since I live in New York, but I aways think of the "initials" of this city as NYC, not NY. Probably wouldn't have gotten it anyway.
"I" does not hop into "rate" in "irate".
Speaking of Victoria, my embarrassing guess on the DD was Pizza Victoria, en route to a 1/5 in that category (assuming "gelato parlor" was good enough).
I'm smart and I want respect.

I feel dumb for not getting FJ. For some reason, I got stuck on St. Louis as a multi-named World Fair site and never got out of it. Love that clue.
And John Wayne Airport? I spent most of the game then thinking about this clip

Came up with rayon for FJ, even though the Ontario worlds Fair didn't ring a bell.

Well, the clue really doesn't say that it does. Merely that the letters are in there.Lefty wrote: In any case, the Wikipedia article strongly indicates that New York has nothing to do with the naming of the material.

Agree with above poster--Margheurita as a bottom clue? And a DD at that, even?
"Fixed charge" also had me thinking of ion.
The FJ category had me scared and I would've bet nothing, hoping for a stumper. Geez, even I got it...

I'm not even an NBA fan really, but LeBron for $600? Come on, that's gotta be after his very high profile leaving of Cleveland for Miami, which, if it made my radar must be quite well known.xxaaaxx wrote:I'm not even an NBA fan really, but I was surprised Rose/Bulls was a TS.
Judges: in Italian Food $1600, the answer given was "gelateria" (or something like that). I said "gelato shoppe". Is there a rule that it had to be in Italian?
Fortunately, I was just reading an article or two on Iron Eyes Cody just yesterday, giving me an easy get.

Re: Tuesday, June 19, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
Hi, everyone! Just started watching "my week" of shows—eep! So funny to see the games now, especially since I was so jittery about being called next that I was only half watching most of the time (and totally blanked out on the nylon FJ). But that David! Ooo! He was already the returning champ and the only one not in our nervous little hotel shuttle group the first morning, but then he kept coming back to the green room after every game! Nooooo! As friendly as everyone was, I think we were just a leetle bit less excited to see him come back each time. (I kid, David!)(Sort of!)
Shop talk for Tuesday's game: Alex **loved** Navy Curt. He got such a kick out of his USO story about him steering the ship and kept going back to it whenever we'd have a commercial break. He was totally tickled. And Curt was so very tall! The little platforms for David and Victoria got quite a workout that taping. What else? I think the set looks so much more beautiful in person than on TV. Everything's all smooth glass and softly glowy. The cameras do not do it justice at all.
My game's on Thursday. Can't decide if I want to jump up and down or puke... Those are both valid reactions, right?
