I was due for a good week. On the whole I thought that this week's boards were bad but this was a pretty good batch of FJ clues. A few were too easy or hard for regular play but they were at least well written.

Mon - Elephant.
Tue - Concord; knew it was Russo-Japanese war, knew it was New England, couldn't have gotten to Portsmouth unprompted though.
Wed - Breakfast Club, but clam for all intents and purposes. Given an hour, might eventually have gotten to Fast Times, but not a chance in 30 sec.
Thu - Lady Chatterly's Lover, but another clam like above. The difference being I never would've gotten Tropic of Cancer
Fri - Thankfully knowing Churchill got the Lit. Nobel for his history works paid off salvaging part of this horrid week.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

The first three were instagets (including knowing all the details of the peace treaty that won TR the Nobel Prize). On Thursday all I could come up with was The Plague, even though I was pretty sure it took place in Algiers. On Friday I said George Marshall. In retrospect I feel like an idiot bc I know that Churchill was a Nobel Prize winner in Literature, and he was even the answer to an FJ in a board I wrote for an online J! game, for which the category of that FJ was "Nobel Prize-winning authors.

Some interesting synergy among the FJ clues this week -- two clues related to Teddy Roosevelt, and two clues related to Nobel prizes.

For the rest, I had never heard of Jacqueline Cochran (although, looking at the archive, she's come up before).

Instaget on Monday, no freaking idea on the rest.

As I've said before, I had never even heard of the Russo-Japanese War before this week. I've never seen Ridgemont High, so I didn't know who starred in it; I've never heard of that book; and I didn't know Churchill was also a painter.

Once again, I find trying to learn war facts such a chore, thanks in no small part to the infernal Civil War class I took and failed. I just find names of battles, who won/lost, etc. to be incredibly dull. Read a few Steinbeck books at mom's recommendation, but not East of Eden.

3/5 seems to be my well-worn groove lately...

I knew that The Plague is about Algeria. I've been a bit of a TR buff, so I guess that's why I knew Portsmouth...
Why did I think Chuck Yeager's wife had broken the sound barrier with him? Since I had no idea what her first name would be, was I thinking of Jeana Yeager, an aviator much younger than Chuck who had nothing to do with breaking the barrier, and is apparently not even related to Chuck?? Perhaps...

Nor did I, but I figured it was something he might do, so I took a stab at it.

 M: Amazing story which I had not heard before - that TR was quite the manly man!
:( T: Difficult but knowable - I love these types of clues and would really have liked to have gotten this one.
Got to Russo-Japanese War, then WAGged some random U.S. city (and, embarrassingly, not even a New Englandish one).
 W: Never saw the movie, but "1982 teen comedy" was enough.
:( Th: Missed the "disease" TOM completely, still probably wouldn't have gotten to it without banned or Miller (or both !?!).
 F: Knew Churchill wrote some history books and won a Nobel prize; quit while I was ahead.

 Civil War + bloodiest day => Antietam
 East of Eden only because so many other Steinbeck works had already been used; would have CLAMmed if it was first clue revealed in category.
:?: NHO Jacqueline Cochran

Had never heard of the treaty, didn't know the war.
East of Eden was only a guess through process of elimination.

For the season:
FJ: 117-88
First third:46-29
Second third: 40-35
Extras: 60-63
TOC: 5-5
College: 4-6
Teachers: 5-5
Teen: 6-4
Power Players: 4-1
Longest FJ winning streak: 8 (active 1)
Longest FJ losing streak: 5
5/5:2
4/5:7
3/5:18
2/5:12
1/5:1
0/5:1

Bull Moose was an instaget

I knew the war, but had no idea where the treaty was done. WAGed a random New England city and went with Boston.

Penn's role in the movie is probably the most famous and I learned of Whitaker's role when he won the Oscar. I did not know about Cage/Coppola, but the moive itself seemed obvious.

No chance on the book. I've heard of it, but don't know anything about it. I took a guess with The Lost Generation, which isn't even a book!

I knew Winnie painted, so Friday was a breeze.

Antietam was easy. Guessed Of Mice and Men on the book. Never heard of that fast lady.

Probably the most difficult five question set of the year. Note, "difficult" means the answers are a bit more obscure, not that the question is sneaky or flawed (see the Sardinia FJ fiasco).

I'd have to say Friday's is one of my favorites where writing is concerned (and not just because I got it :D )
