I thought the bullhorn was pretty bad ass myself.
I wish they had finished Last Survivors. I missed the Light Brigade, but otherwise the category was pretty simple....name some famous event after we describe it. The titanic was my precall. I wonder if all the Hindenberg survivors are still around.
Pigeon should have been negged.

Forget the bullhorn. I liked this clue's layout:

It really was ridiculous that they counted "The Barber of Seville" wrong, since it absolutely satisfied the clue. They should have prompted him for more information (or phrased the question more carefully in the first place) if they wanted "Figaro" to be the only acceptable answer.
Re: Friday, July 13, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
I also liked the layout of the Luxor clue. Guess I should brush up on Vegas casinos, though.
Bullhorn is definitely a YouTube moment. Two in one week — whodathunkit. (Bpmod, mind sending me that one too? I'd prefer it to have his bullhorned throw to commrecial in it, too.)

I'd have to see the phrasing again, but I was thinking this very thing.Ozymandias wrote:I suggest that Brian should not have been negged on the "Figaro" question. The clue referred to "this character's name" being repeated. Yes, the name is Figaro, but Figaro is the Barber of Seville, which is a correct alternate identification of the character. Yet again, the judges were surprised by a correct answer that wasn't what they had in mind, and, yet again, they fumbled it.

Re: Friday, July 13, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
Brian was definitely cheated on the Figaro question. J! owes him a callback. "the name of this character" is certainly susceptible of the Barber of Seville as an answer. The name of the Barber of Seville IS Figaro.
In fact, I'm going to up the stakes and say that "the Barber of Seville" is MORE correct than Figaro, and I would probably only grant Figaro grudgingly, based on the wording of the question. Based on Brian's music major line, I'd say the effect of getting negged was more than the obvious loss of points; maybe his confidence was shaken. Shame on Jeopardy!
So upset I missed Faust. I first thought "Dr. Faustus," then took it back.
How do they NOT get FJ? They were spotted John Dryden for goodness sake.

Have at it judges.
Davey: 8 + 8 = 16 and I'm happy about that. Whether it's seasons 5 and 6 or just 5, whatever. I suspect the wait until the 9th episode will be torture. (or murder, or a killer or a cliff hanger)

They asked for the character's name, not his occupation. also, it was Figaro that was said repeatedly in the aria, not barber. so I say he was wrong.
I've never seen the opera and know nothing about it, so I'm probably not the best judge in this case.

True, but irrelevant. The clue called for a response of "this character", not "this name"."Barber of Seville" is more accurately an epithet, not a proper name.

Let me quote the clue: "Rossini's aria "Largo al Factotum" REPEATS THE NAME OF THIS CHARACTER repeatedly." This specifically requests the character who is named repeatedly in the aria. It doesn't say, "the aria repeats this name repeatedly." I'd say sufficient information to uniquely identify the character is sufficient. I'd even say the person who recognizes this defect in the question and goes from Figaro to the Barber of Seville deserves brownie points. Good for him.
I guess you never saw the play, so sorry for beating up on you, but i thought this was a good vehicle to make my point clear.
I guess the funny thing is that I also thought the Barber of Seville, but I just backed into it after moments of stressed reflection; I couldn't think of the lyrics to the aria.

Rossini's aria "Largo Al Factotum" repeats the name of this character repeatedly.
First, let's wince, strongly, at the redundancy.
Now, if it were...
Rossini's aria "Largo Al Factotum" repeats this name repeatedly.
Figaro is the only possible answer.
The way the question is phrased, I think either works equally well. Is it asking for the NAME, or is it asking for the character whose name is being repeated? If the latter, well, the character can be identified either as The Barber of Seville, or as Figaro.

On another note, for Mechanical 1600, I thought they were talking about a simple machine. Do you suppose "wheel and axle" would have been an acceptible response? I couldn't think of this then of course.

Oooh, sorry.goforthetie wrote:Left-most contestant, I believe.ACW wrote:So tie for 2nd at the end of J! How's it decided who picks first for J!?
From what I've learned on the board, it's the one who was behind most recently. (I don't know what they'd do if one player managed to be the sole responder on all the questions in the J! round (meaning there not being a time where the other two weren't tied (at $0 a piece)). Since the occupants of the second and third podiums are determined randomly (a question I long had and was recently answered on the board), going by left-most position (when the champ isn't involved) is a bit unfair.
Nope, this was my precall (surprised it was so highly-valued as a result), and my only get, along with the first clue, in the category. I was waiting for a question about the Waterboy. Or, perhaps Harry's Law.
