I am reducing my posting volume by 50% . . . by submitting notice of two recent posts at the same time. This is part of my attempt to reintroduce the civilized virtue of compromise to our public discourse.

Or, perhaps: 'When pigs fly a kite in a thunderstorm'?

OK, here's my answers:
Spoiler
Political term for a season finale leading to worse things: Slippery slope hanger
Revealing way to conform: Camel toe the line
The Situation is forgiven: Six-pack absolution
Ronald Reagan's vision of America didn't amount to anything: Shining city on a hill o' beans.
Impossible Ben Franklin experiment: When pigs fly a kite

I know, it's been two whole days, how can I have kept you waiting so long?

My less than avid readers (yes, Vanya, I mean you) will even like this post -- in fact it would fit quite nicely under "Pet Intellectual Peeves":

A Sign Of Trouble

Honestly.

Great commentary, Bill! You didn't even mention the dearth of periods! (for some reason, only 4 and 6 get so honored.)
I'd like to point out they didn't have "wa not" but "wan not," so perhaps it has something to do with the absence of a sickly pallor?
Lastly, can we at least give them points for not using a single plurastrophe?

In a similar vein, Stewart's Shops (NY- based convenience chain) once offered a top 5 as to why they sell so much coffee. One of the reasons was something like, "Always brewing a fresh pot to keep up with the demand." That one to me always seemed a bit circular. So one of the reasons there's such a high demand for their coffee is because... there's a high demand?

Those attitudes are one reason I've switched to amazon.com! I love reading but they can stuff the smug/judgemental attitudes. Just ring it up & say Thanks.

Thanks for posting this link. As a former bookstore clerk, I laughed out loud (which scared the cat, since she doesn't often hear that sort of thing from me).

My favorite judgmental-bookseller incident, from my brilliant career in the used book biz: a well-dressed lady drove up in a fancy car and came into my humble used book store. She wanted to buy some leather-bound classics with which to decorate her house and impress her guests. After browsing through a number of books and rejecting them because she'd never heard of them, she seized a leather-bound copy of Moby-Dick. "Ooh," she said, "Moby-Dick. I've heard of him. What kind of a guy was Moby, anyway?"

I sighed and told her that he was "a large white guy."

Thanks, Pink darling! Yours made me laugh out loud too!

I had a sweet college kid ask me for "that book by Hemingway -- Oh Man, The Sea".

I think anyone who has worked with the public in a customer service capacity "gets it".

John, these are not the things we would ever say to your face if you were a customer. If you think Amazon respects you as a person, good on 'ya. I prefer to do business with a human being. But I realize I'm not impartial on the subject, since I have a horse in this race, and it's probably an also ran.

Sometimes crossword puzzles can drive me crazy. Today I had the USA Today puzzle solved except for one box and I knew I had to resort to looking up the answer.

BALLROOM GLIDE (6 letters across)
ASIAN ANTELOPE (5 letters down)

I had: C H A S _ E
>>>>>>>>>>>>E
>>>>>>>>>>>>R
>>>>>>>>>>>>O
>>>>>>>>>>>>W

It's frustrating to have both parts unknown even after seeing the answer:
Spoiler
S

there's a term for that- forgot what it is. Where you've never heard of either cross, so you have no idea what the missing letter is.
