Theoretically, Oscars are awarded for a single performance. Anything else they've done is irrelevant.Woppy T wrote:Point taken, given the recent films. But at least he is IN THE MOVIES, unlike Ms. Winfrey.Volante wrote:Second.bomtr wrote:I'm picking George Lucas.

One does not simply walk into a Think Different...
8. THE DREADED MUSIC QUESTION
It's simple! I give you a list of Best Original Song winners. Pick one and give the movie it was in.
...
Bonus! For one point off, include a composer or lyricist who received an award for the song in question.
Pretty good spread.
And as I pretty much already explained this one, on to the scoring! Asterisks represent people who successfully named one of the winners.

I knew all the songs and movies, but going for the bonus limited my options since composer/lyricist had me frightened to just guess the artist who sang. I saw Dick Tracy the movie once. I have listened to the music about this many times: 23x10^23

Worst part? I was mostly sure but not positive that Morodor was involved in the Berlin song. AARRRGH. A little more boldness and this would've worked like a DROP for me!

Re: [TD 144] The Kodak Theater presents... The 144th Think Different!
A TD has to be taken with one shot.
9. I KNEW IT WAS YOU
John Cazale. Major roles in five pictures, appearing in only six throughout his life. His best showing at an awards ceremony? Nominated for a Golden Globe. What makes this man so memorable? All six of the films he was in went on to be nominated for Best Picture. Three went on to win. Quite the record.
Name a film featuring John Cazale.
Trivia Bonus! During filming of his final film, the studio behind it found he was dying of cancer. His actress girlfriend at the time stuck by his side and said if he goes, so does she. The studio relented, and Cazale made it through filming. For one point off, name this actress.
When I was first introduced to the TD, I always wondered how a clue with a very low number of correct responses would do. Apparently it involves lots of dropping. I also tried to include two TOMs with this, for those unfamiliar with the actor, but they're likely only obvious in retrospect... (And, upon re-reading, the second didn't land nearly as well as I originally thought.)
"I knew it was you" was a line from The Godfather, Part II, spoken by Michael (Al Pacino) to Fredo (John Cazale).
And the "Roles in five pictures, appearing in six..." I had intended to imply the sixth was made after his death and would have used him in flashbacks, but the way I worded it it might just be referring to a bit part. The idea was "What movie has had its sequel nominated?" which would hopefully also take you to the Godfather series. Mea culpa.
His girlfriend at the time of his last filming role was Meryl Streep. Asterisks denote correct responses. I just find that rather surreal; how different would this TD have been if Cazale didn't die? Would Question 3 still be possible? Anyway...

Wow, I guess I was playing with an unloaded pistol to avoid the sheep. Lucky me to amazingly get a singleton. Meryl Streep was the bonus? No chance on that one. Well done all of you who collected.

Are you effing kidding me!? I specifically dropped this question to avoid playing Russian roulette with the obvious Godfather choices, and GF1 is a singleton and the other 2 are UNUSED?!?

But don't you think you easily might have answered The Deer Hunter as well.... and then regretted that decision if you did? I think your dropping sasheening this was absolutely a good decision if you didn't have an obviously better candidate question to use it on. I decided early on that I strongly preferred not to touch this question, so I went with a drop.xxaaaxx wrote:Are you effing kidding me!? Re: [TD 144] The Kodak Theater presents... The 144th Think Different!
True, but I didn't think 12 other people would avoid answering altogether (mistake #1). I figured there would be one sheep (a random Godfather movie -- mistake #2), then a few 3/4/5's (#3), and...sasheening...would avoid the guessing game and maybe snag a singleton (#4). This is why I don't gambleRandyG wrote:But don't you think you easily might have answered The Deer Hunter as well.... and then regretted that decision if you did? In retrospect I wish I had used it on the $100M question, since that sheep is weighing my score down like an anchor, but oh well, still 5 more to go (and perhaps 5 more missed sasheening opportunities to regret ).
BTW: TDs 55-67, lost to the sands of time? This is where losing the files from my TD63 to a HDD failure really sucks.

Re: [TD 144] The Kodak Theater presents... The 144th Think Different!
Whoopin' it up.
10. EGOT
A pinnacle for the acting community, showing your diversity not just on film, but on stage, on television and on record. The EGOT crowd has just thirteen elite members, each with an Emmy, a Grammy, a Tony and an Oscar. While some will pick nits as to whether honorary awards count as much, or if the daytime is just as good as primetime, I say, 'Pshaw!' It still involves getting the award committees to recognize you.
Name one of the thirteen EGOT holders.
Oh good, glad I explicitly included 'honorary counts' here. I was worried as I tallied this up one of my clarifications would have broken it.
And once again, the newest member goes unguessed. Vader is disappointed in you. Also, mental note: instead of going for an archaic old answer, go for the absolute most recent.
I wonder if we have a lot of 30 Rock fans here as well...

Re: [TD 144] The Kodak Theater presents... The 144th Think Different!
One does not simply...wait, I already used that one...
11. FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT
In the past 83 years, the Best Picture has taken on many dark, bloody and vulgar topics and shown them without looking away. Unfortunately, this can cause a bit of a problem if you have youngsters and want to show them a film that was considered that year's best. Well, this will make picking a film slightly easier...
Name a Best Picture winner that is not R- or X-Rated
Notes: If a film was re-rated and remained uncut, the lower rating will count. If a film had to be re-cut to get a lower rating, only the version that won the Oscar counts.
Trivia! Yes, there actually was an X-Rated Best Picture winner: Midnight Cowboy. It would only rate R today, I'm sure.
This one mostly boiled down to, "Name a Best Picture winner prior to the mid-late 1960s." Oh, and a smattering of others post that. I think people were expecting a "gotcha" or some other neg-bait...nope, that's the next one.
The two specific cases that led to the long notes section: Terms of Endearment originally got an 'R' but Director James L. Brooks managed to talk the MPAA down to a 'PG'; Terms would have counted. The other was The King's Speech: originally rated 'R,' it was given a 'PG-13' cut in a (blatent) attempt to boost it's box office take; King's Speech would not have counted.
Further research would have allowed Amadeus under the second criteria; original release was 'PG', 2002 Director's Cut was rated 'R'. (What, you ask, warrented such a major upgrade in rating? Boobs, apparently. Yet Kate Winslet's rate only PG-13? And with a longer screentime?! Raters are idiots.)

Re: [TD 144] The Kodak Theater presents... The 144th Think Different!
Making what you see look stylin.
12. THERE'S AN AWARD FOR THAT
There's more awards at the Oscars than just the acting, the directing and the producing. No one asks about them, but they tend to make or break your over/under at the office pool.
Name one of the thirteen Oscar categories that have NOT been explicitly named in this TD.
My original plan was to make each clue themed off one award. Long story short, you know who Wally Pfister is? That's why I didn't.
The clue that shows I can't count... There's actually fifteen valid answers; due to the World Almanac clumping the shorts together, I neglected seperating them out. Whole mess. I was aiming to give the correct number to give, in reverse, the total number of invalid answers, of which there were nine total: eight very obvious, one stuck into an otherwise unrelated question (which would be the 'gotcha').
Next clue won't be scored til tomorrow. Need to use a whole different method than the one I've been doing to tally it up per my criteria.
And, if you didn't already look it up, Wally Pfister is Chris Nolan's go-to cinematographer and was responsible for the camera work on, amongst others, Memento, The Prestige, The Dark Knight and won Best Cinematography for Inception.

Re: [TD 144] The Kodak Theater presents... The 144th Think Different!
