For the next question, I'm curious to know whether Charlie and Donald Kaufman would have counted if Adaptation had won for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Possible; don't know if they would have made a second statue or just double labeled Charlie's.goforthetie wrote:For the next question, I'm curious to know whether Charlie and Donald Kaufman would have counted if Adaptation had won for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The one I want to see win is Roderick Jaynes, the Coens' Editor.

Much like in politics or business, Hollywood has their Kennedys, their Windsors, their Hapsburgs, their Bushes. Children, spouses, they all find a way to get in the biz, and some aren't just successful, they win awards. Maybe talent is genetic...
Name two Oscar winners who are related in three degrees of seperation or less on the family tree.
Two parter. Only fitting since the clue itself is sort of a double. This post, partially as a teaser and partially as me taking a break since sorting this was bleck, will display the frequency of names used. Note: some of these names are incorrect, this is not denoted here, but will be in the next post where I give the scores.

Re: [TD 144] The Kodak Theater presents... The 144th Think Different!
It's not clear to me what constitutes the individual score. Is it the number of other Oscar winners who are within 3 degrees of separation of this winner? If so, then some of these scores are incorrect. Is that what you meant in your note that "some of these names are incorrect?"Volante wrote:...Really? Anjelica Huston? Also, Lionel Newman -- Alfred's brother, Randy's uncle -- should be added.

Scores are in the next post, which should hopefully get done within the hour. It'll make more sense.RandyG wrote:...

From the clarifications: "Except where explicitly mentioned (i.e., Question 5), an Oscar Winner refers to someone who's won a competitive award. Not an honorary."
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

Re: [TD 144] The Kodak Theater presents... The 144th Think Different!
The Award Ceremony is coming fast upon us, in fact, the next scoring round will determine the winners, so I'm going to milk this just a smidgen longer and make you all suffer!
Final scores, including detailed Question 14 results, will be given during then.
But first, a preview of the last question's results:
14. BONUS - IN MEMORIUM
Every year, we lose the genius of past times and generations, and every year we remember them through a two second appearance in a montage that's drowned out by someone either singing or dragging a cat through a chalkboard factory. Then we go to the internet and wonder and rant about why someone wasn't included in that clearly solemn event. (Yeah...I'm still griping over last year's...)
Name an Oscar nominee who passed away between December 11, 2010 and now.
I particularly liked how evil the scoring ended up being on this one. With the ability to drop given for free, guessing the sheep made obscurer answers even more valuable.
13 people voluntarily dropped the clue, leaving 15 to take a crack at it. Below are the names and score changes that will be handed out to those 15 as our proceedings draw to an end:
Liz Taylor (-1)
Pete Postlethwaite (-6)
Sidney Lumet (-6)
Cliff Robertson (-7)
Norman Corwin (-7)
Peter Falk (-7)
Dennis Hopper (5) (Passed away on 29 May, 2010)
In addition, the following (along with many others) also qualified:
Blake Edwards
Jackie Cooper
John Barry
Susannah York
Silence, please, I can hear fidgeting in the seats, but there's still one more matter of protocol:
15. ICEBREAKER TIE BREAKER
As I can hear the orchestra trying to play me off for the sixth time, there's one last question to give out: the tie breaker.
The Oscar ceremony is consistantly one of the highest rated shows on TV, but it has been slipping of late. Whether AMPAS agrees or not, it seems the more popular the movies are in the running for Best Picture, the higher the number of viewers. The high water mark of viewers, logically, was the 70th Academy Awards, where Titanic and James Cameron sailed off with the gold.
To four significant digits, how many viewers (in millions), did the 70th Academy Awards telecast have?
The 70th Academy Awards telecast, in the US, had 57.25 million viewers. Two creative guessers realized 'counting' was a good strategy here
For comparison, the current lowest rated in modern history was the 80th Academy Awards, when No Country For Old Men won (and when Jon Stewart was hosting the second time) racking up a mere 31.76 million viewers in comparison.
I wanted to address this now, so the closing wouldn't be filled with more numbers than necessary. Plus I'm sure you want to know how you did.
This is as much as a spoiler as you'll explicitly get from me: equal guesses of viewership ended up not playing a role. If you have the same guess as someone else for Q15, you have a different final score than them.
And with that, I bid you a good night.
Now get this bloody microphone off of me already. Oof. Tough crowd. So glad this is almost...gah, damn battery pack...over. The executive producers have been riding me like...wait, what? It's still live?! YOU LITTLE *crzzzzk* *crackle* *bzzzzz* *click*

Take it up with the L.A. Times and blame the popularity of Titanic.Vanya wrote:This means 1 in 5 Americans over the age of about 5 watched the telecast. I am not buying that at all.Volante wrote:

Judy Garland & Liza Minnelli (Judy never won.) - Bamaman
didn't we establish earlier that Judy won an honorary Oscar?
From the clarifications: "Except where explicitly mentioned (i.e., Question 5), an Oscar Winner refers to someone who's won a competitive award. Not an honorary."
THanks, my bad. I really need to read the directions (and questions) more carefully.

Even though I got a singleton with Francis Ford Coppola and Nicolas Cage, I'm kicking myself that I didn't take the Sherman Brothers, since I just watched "The Boys," a documentary about them.

Re: [TD 144] The Kodak Theater presents... The 144th Think Different!
If you'd kindly take your seats and put away the Hickory Farms cheese samplers included in your gift baskets, I'd like to welcome you to the Kodak Theater. We've got just enough time before Billy Crystal defiles the stage yet again to wrap this up.
I'd like to take this time to thank everyone who participated. This is my first TD and, mostly, I think it went pretty well. Even Question 13, which, despite the horrific overhead, worked out about like I hoped. I have a newfound respect to those who run these, finding questions, dealing with the rules, loopholes and scoring, and knowing full well that (especially with this crowd) they WILL find, despite your best efforts, what you overlooked.
So give yourselves a round of applause.

And now, our Honorable Mentions:
28. amorris525 - 77.5
27. debramc - 67.5
26. oddsox - 64.5 (After a -1 adjustment for Liz Taylor)

16. fowlerism - 40
15. seaborgium - 39
14. Paucle - 38.5 (Cliff Robertson's -7 giving a good jump of around 4 spots)
13. opusthepenguin - 38 (The tie breaker putting you 4th of 4 among the 38s)
12. Vanya - 38 (-1 for Liz Taylor, 3rd best tiebreaker between the 38s.)
11. Turd Ferguson - 38 (-1 for Liz Taylor, 2nd best tiebreaker between the 38s.)
10. gamawire - 38 - (While taking +5 for Dennis Hopper, the best viewership guess between the 38s keeps you at 10th.)
9. mitchparov - 31 (-1 for Liz Taylor)

For those keeping track, not only are there six places left to announce, there's still six bonuses left to assign!
Coming in at 6th...
teapot37 (30)
Using the double whammy of Liz Taylor and a better tiebreaker guess to take our first rewarded spot. You'll be joining Aaron Sorkin on stage, presenting the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. One important note: no Sports Night jokes. He'll release David Fincher on you. You do not want that.
Following you both on the award podium and on stage, in 5th place...
Peggles (27)
A singleton on Peter Falk giving a 7 point drop made you a shoe-in. Standing alongside Christopher Nolan, you'll be handing out the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. (Handing it directly to him is an option as well; we'll have smoke bombs ready to cover your escape.)
In 4th place...
MarkBarrett (25)
Your responce of Liz Taylor just wasn't enough to maintain your lead. Hopefully assisting last year's Best Actress Natalie Portman hand out this year's Best Actor in a Leading Role trophy will be consolation enough.
And in 3rd...
bomtr (24.5)
Lighting the way with Sidney Lumet for 6 points off, you'll be with last year's Best Actor Colin Firth to present this year's Best Actress in a Leading Role. Don't stutter!
The penultimate award goes to 2nd place finisher...
goforthetie (23)
Handing out an award your final answer, Sidney Lumet, never got in real life, you'll be next to Peter Jackson as the last holder of the Best Director statuette before the winner gets it.
Finally, proving most expertly the Hollywood adage of "It's not what you know, it's who you know"...
RandyG (22)
Norman Corwin, an acquaintence of our winner for years, his sole nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1956 (Lust for Life...that title sounds familiar...) provided a 7 point drop for RandyG all the way into First Place. There will be many others on stage helping you hand out the Best Picture statuette, but you'll be the most important since between you and The Muppets, there are only two dexterous hands! I just hope you don't mind being upstaged by green felt.
And again, thanks to everyone!
I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did running it. Oh, hey, you got me something too! What is that, a hook? Oh you shouldn't ha*hurk*
