Aced the quiz, although took me a while to get Andorra (got it a fraction before Sheldon said it - using J! rules, I count it. )Bamaman wrote:So, dave, what did you think of the show last night? Did you ace Sheldon's quiz? I knew the one about the non-rectangular flag, but that was it. didn't know the bit about Oregon, Andorra or any of the others.
And was that story about Haiti and Liechtenstein true? Wikipedia says it was, but it also does not list Haiti as being in the 1936 Olympics.
The "only non-rectangular flag" is a bit of a misnomer - first of all, is a square a rectangle? (Some say yes, some say no). Also, Sheldon didn't specify national flag, residents of the Buckeye State (like Robert KS and others) would protest. "World's only non-quadrilateral national flag" is an epithet that more suits Nepal's flag. So, Sheldon's wording is close enough for J! but, as we all know, sometimes isn't *precisely* right.
The Haiti/Liechtenstein thing I have heard, but honestly I haven't seen any concrete evidence about it, but it is oft-repeated by vexillologists as well (such as here on my favourite vexillological site). (My favourite side anecdote of one person I came across mentioning the 1936 incident likened it to "two women who showed up for a party in the same dress.)
