If you're referring to LBJ, he wasn't the one who got us into the war, though he certainly did escalate our involvement in it. In Robert Caro's masterful biographies of LBJ, it is made clear that Johnson had grave misgivings at the outset about Vietnam, but felt compelled to continue the war that Kennedy had started (for a host of complicated reasons). What is quite clear is that the war destroyed him, both politically and emotionally. His private conversations at that time make clear how tormented he was by what he increasingly saw as an unwinnable war.Bamaman wrote:
