Teen tournament dates set

Post by Bamaman »

A 16-year-old junior at Spain Park High School in Hoover has been selected to participate in the Jeopardy! Teen Tournament next week in Culver City, Calif.

Jeopardy! officials announced today that Kevin Yang is one of 15 teens chosen from among 20,000 contestants to participate in the tournament at Sony Pictures Studios.

Yang's family plans to leave for California on Sunday. The tournament is scheduled to air on TV April 30-May 11.
This was in the local paper Friday so I guess they are taping the teen tourney this week. A nice plug for the archive in the article as well.

Glad to have a local rooting interest in the tournament this year. I live maybe 20 miles or so from where he does.

1987 Seniors Tournament (Season 3)-Held in May
$6,000 (Lee Saunders)
$5,800 (Jane Weaver)

Only the final game is archived. Wild card information came from KellyJ!'s post.

1988 Seniors Tournament (Season 4)
I do not have enough information about this tournament. None of the games are archived.

1989 Seniors Tournament (Season 5)
I do not have enough information about this tournament. None of the games are archived.

1990 Seniors Tournament (Season 6):
$2,700 (Arnold Yellin)
$2,600 (Cole Andersen)

None of these games are archived, information from KellyJ!

1991 Seniors tournament (Season 7)-Held in July
A fifth wildcard spot was added in this tournament due to the triple-zero finish in QF2. Malcolm Post got the fourth wildcard with $6,000, and Kay Paul picked up the extra spot with $3,000. All of the quarterfinalists in this tournament who did not go on to the semifinals finished with $0; Florence Cannizzo and Pat Van Melle were tied for the highest pre-FJ! score with $5,900 each (and both were contestants in the triple-zero game).

Only final game is archived.

1992 Seniors Tournament (Season 8):
$2,000 (Lois Rosenfeld)
$1,599 (Mag Birge)

None of the games are archived.

1993 Seniors Tournament (Season 9)-Held in July:
$10,010 (Hugh Murphy)
$10,000 (Helen Druva)

Only the last QF game is archived

1994 Seniors Tournament (Season 10):
$400 (Frances Taliaferro)
$300 (Dodge Crockett)

None of the games are archived.

1995A Seniors Tournament (Season 11)-Held in July:
$7,000 (Steve Paquette)
$5,200 (Fran Rothman)

None of the games are archived.

1995B Seniors Tournament (Season 12)-Held in December:
$8,400 (Darryl Adams)
$8,100 (Diane Lilly)

None of the games are archived.

Averages (8 Tournaments):
Average lowest score to get a wild card: $5,314

For averaging purposes, I counted the tournament with the extra wild card as only having four wild cards, with the fourth place person being the lowest qualifier and the fifth place person being the first person out. This differs from KellyJ!'s method.
Average highest score not to get a wild card: $4,575

I think the second week of the Teen tourney(and a DC Power Players celeb week) is to be taped in Washington DC. Presumably the Teen second week and the DC Power PLayers week will be taped in late March or APril.

Considering the Teen Tournament is airing starting April 30, I would think that the April 20-something tape dates would be too late. Although it is technically possible...

I have heard that the Kids' Week games are being taped in DC along with the Power Players.

I thought the DC thing seemed strange when the airdates were posted way back in September in this thread: http://www.jboard.tv/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=237. Why would they have all 15 Teen contestants fly out to LA for a single day of taping, then have 9 of them have to fly to DC at a later date for one more day of taping? It would make much more sense the way bpmod proposed, to tape the single-week Power Players shows and the single-week Kids shows in DC, although if the kids aren't airing until July/August as listed, it would seem odd to have the airdates for the two weeks of DC shows separated by more than two months.

Also, if they think that Wednesday through Tuesday is the ideal schedule for the TOC, College, and Teachers, then why do they go back to Monday-Friday for the Teen Tournament, and presumably Power Players and Kids as well? Why not just pick a format and stick with it?

Not sure about why they do that for the teens, but the Kids is only a 5-game tourney, so that makes perfect sense to make it M-F.

It's been done before. Sahir Islam's tournament was half in LA, half in DC.

Ugh! Did Sony pick up the tab for all those travel expenses? Especially since we're talking about kids who are most likely traveling with at least one parent or guardian. That can add up to a lot of airfare, hotels, meals, etc!

I was wondering the same thing, and I figured at the very least that they would pick up the second set of travel expenses, with the contestants' paying their own way to LA and the show later getting them to DC. But that also made me wonder, I'm pretty sure that the show pays for travel to the TOC, and for a defending champion making repeated trips out west, but for other tournaments, like College, Teen, Teachers, etc., are those contestants on their own as far as getting to LA and paying for their own hotels, similar to regular contestants? It seems like I've seen this addressed before, but I can't seem to remember the answer.

Bumping this thread so any actual tournament participants can correct this, but I believe participants in all tournaments get airfare and hotel provided, plus a per diem that's intended to cover breakfast and dinner (since lunch is provided at the studio) -- for tournaments where the participants aren't adults, a parent/guardian gets those paid for as well.

For my teen tournament appearance (Fall 08) I received airplane tickets for me and both of my parents, a hotel room at the Universal Hilton, three tickets to Universal Studios, a $1000 per diem ($1000 total for all days, not literally each day), transportation to the studio, and lunch at the studio.

Also, they'll have to fly an alternate to DC, so they'll have to send ten players down.

I was on the Fall 2010 College Championship, and they paid for a plane ticket to LA, hotel stay, around $600 total per diem, travel to the studio, and lunch at the studio. My mom came with but she had to pay for her own plane ticket and such.

So, it seems that if you are not yet an adult, then your parents get the tickets to come with. Makes sense.

Just out of curiosity, why have they started using the Wed-Tues schedule for some tournaments? I personally prefer M-F. Does this have something to do with ratings and/or advertising? Or some other logistical reason I can't think of?

I asked that earlier and general consensus is ratings.

Yes. Apparently, nobody watches Jeopardy! on Friday, so they would want the (theoretically) most exciting game of the tournament to happen on a day when people would be watching anyway.

If ratings are bad ion Friday, why not do something to boost those ratings, like having the finals of a tournament?

1987 Teen Tournament (Season 3)-Held in February
This was the first year of the Teen Tournament, but I do not have enough information. Only the first QF is in the archive.

I was going to follow through to that idea, but I couldn't word it quite right.

That would make much more sense, in my opinion.

Or, you know, improve the show since the typical Friday show is indistinguishable from a typical Wednesday show (which presumably has better ratings).

Well, if you keep having good looking young teachers talking about drawing phallic symbols on Friday episodes, perhaps ratings will increase.

The 1985-1996 TOCs were held in November. The TOCs originally had everyone from one season competing for a seasonal tournament.

1985 TOC (Season 2)
$3,300 (Jerry Frankel)
$2,100 (Paula Tupper)

1986 TOC (Season 3)
$5,000 (Lionel Goldbart)
$3,900 (Eric Schoeck)

1987 TOC (Season 4)

$8,000 (Leah Greenwald)

1989 TOC (Season 6)

Beginning in 1994, players who played in the early part of a season played in that season's TOC, rather than waiting for the next season.

$4,000 (Fred Frank)

1995 TOC (Season 12)
$7,750 (Gordon Wean)

$0 (Mark Levaren, $7,600 pre-FJ)
$0 (Mark Lee, $7,400 pre-FJ)

The 2003 TOC had six players finish with no money and two others who were below zero and did not play FJ.

No TOC was held in Season 20 (2003-2004)

2004 TOC (Season 21) Held in September
$4,000 (Chris Miller)
