I wasn't sure when it was built but I remember it being mentioned on MASH so it predates Korea. Of course, they once quoted a movie made in the 1960s so that was taking a chance.

After doing some googling I've reached a conclusion: The phrase "city within a city" is utterly overused, mostly by PR flacks wanting to attract people to their neighborhood or building. Even in Arlington VA it's not just the Pentagon - if you live in Ballston (??) you're also in a city-within-a-city-

Here's what I found at infoplease.com-

A shopping concourse, numerous snack bars, cafeterias, dining rooms, banks, a subway station, and a bus platform make the Pentagon "a city within a city."

Sounds like any random block in NY!

I've never heard that phrase as it relates to the Pentagon. I couldn't come up with anything that made any sense.

All I could think of was how some large airports could be described as being like small indoor cities, what with the shopping and food areas…though, of course, an airport is not "a building" (singular).

I would say that I may have read for Alec then, but I usually get stuck with JV, and I'm guessing he's in Varsity.

I've lived here for more than 30 years, and I finally got to the Pentagon earlier this year. The first time we went, a nice man with holding his automatic weapon informed my escort that he had the wrong credentials. We went back a week or two later, and it was pretty fascinating to finally see it (my destination was the press briefing room).
