Lach Trash: Herald, Journal, black hole, Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, Stephen King; DD: Afghanistan

I didn't come up with anything, but I figured radical was right when it popped up.

For Cindy to qualify for the TOC while terminally ill ranks as one of the greatest achievements in the history of the game.

God, what if she becomes too sick to play, and just leaves? Would she be the first person to retire from Jeopardy?

Coryat: $30,600
42 R/1 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: black holes, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Afghanistan

There aren't enough superlatives to describe what Cindy has done. It would be a fantastic gesture if, in addition to Cindy's eventual total, TPTB donates at least the $5000 minimum TOC prize to CRI.

Ditto.

It's worth committing to memory that Henry Clay was from Kentucky and Daniel Webster was from New Hampshire.

Yes!

Okay, now for my gripe about FJ. How is radical a "quantity" in mathematics? I said it right away, but then i thought, wait, isn't radical the square root symbol? Or am I too far removed from math classes to remember another definition.

And TPH, WLT Gaga at $200? Um, it was incredibly recent pop culture. Actually, the clues were either completely or nearly in reverse chronological order.

I had this thought too (and by the way it can be any root, such as a cube root or fourth root, and not just a square root). Most websites that I found characterize a "radical" in the context of mathematics as an expression. I did find one or two that used the term "quantity." But overall, I think this wasn't the most elegantly written FJ clue. (As has been observed above, "drastic" also seemed an odd choice of words to describe "radical" politics.)

There are a number of different songs with the title "The Power of Love." Celine Dion's is a cover of a song that was originally performed by Jennifer Rush. (It's not the same as, to name the one that first comes to my mind, the song "The Power of Love" that was originally performed by Huey Lewis and the News.)
You missed 'written by'. Not to mention 'held the position of being "the best-selling single by a female solo artist in the history of the British music industry" according to the Guinness Book of World Records for [about seven] years'.

So, I guess she did remake it. I am glad I've never heard her take on it.

I blanked on FJ. I thought for sure that I could get it from the Tom Wolfe angle, but nope. I should have at least attempted to attack it from one of the other directions.
I tried approaching this one from every direction but North by Northwest, and came up with a big, honking zero. I put something down because, you know, it's supposedly better than no response at all. But in this case not much.

Many congrats to the champ for what I think was an amazingly tough sole get and a well-deserved fifth win.

I was definitely stuck on "quantity." I originally was going down the road of mathematical expressions or arguments, but settled on "gross" since I had NHO the Wolfe piece and knew it at least satisfied the math portion and the chemistry one if you're being generous...

Originally from New Hampshire, but he was a senator from Massachusetts and that's the state he's most associated with.

Also, "orator" is generally a Pavlov for Webster.

The OED uses "quantity" in its definition.

4 Mathematics
A quantity forming or expressed as the root of another.

In general, but there is one record of a clue asking for "orator" and wanting Henry Clay. There are no prior records of a clue mentioning "compromise" and asking for Daniel Webster. My mind went to Clay first on this clue but quickly switched to Webster since Clay wasn't a Yankee.

Found in a 1970 Tom Wolfe book title, it’s a chemistry term, a math quantity & a drastic word in politics
I said Cox-Zucker (Cox-Zucker machine, "cocksucker" in political slang", and Tom Wolfe sounded like an erotica author. These game are getting hard man.

Why is wife in quotation marks? Are they not legally married?

When Cindy fell into the red early, I felt this was it. The extra two weeks and travel back and forth had taken its toll. But she proved me wrong once again and came back to win impressively.

Had it been anyone else, I would have hoped she missed FJ so Kristin's overwager would have been exposed.

I also said sonar for echolocation.

It was a bit sad seeing a Christmas-themed board knowing Cindy did not live to see another Christmas, or even to watch the Tony Bennett special.

I have no real opinion on Bennett either way. But I do not like celebrity clue readers who take forever to read the answer. I understand he is 90 years old, but let's not slow down the game just to plug his "birthday" special. I had birthday in quotes because his birthday was in August. I wonder if they would have ditched this category if Bennett had died prior to the show being filmed.

And congrats again to Cindy. This has been an amazing run.

opusthepenguin wrote:Wow! This was a TOC level FJ. I expected it to be a triple stumper. They feed you 1970 and Tom Wolfe and expect you to guesss the book and check all the title words against the clue. So, fine, you start with The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. Nope. Nothing there checks all three boxes.
Well, yes & no... turns out 'acid test ratio' in finance mathematics is a phrase meaning 'Quick Ratio' so there is kind of a validation there; and 'acid test' loosely applied might be construed as 'political' by some stretch of the imaginarium. So, if one NHO 'Radical Chic' then 'acid test' was not an unreasonable guess. Truly a devilish clue. Knowing that radical is both a math and political term did not help me reach the get, absent complete mastery of Wolfe's works. IMHO these FJs get progressively more obscure until TPTB completely lose their audience and the ratings drop off.
Then they dumb it down again! "Rad, Man!"

Yes, but "acid test" would not have fit the part: "a drastic word in politics" because it's two words, not one.

I had exponential for FJ just to put something down.

As I said earlier, this was an amazing game by Cindy since she had to wait two weeks to play again, which could be a big difference in her health. I wonder why they chose to put her in the second game on the second taping day. I know they have no idea someone is going to go on a run and have to return, but it seems like they could have avoided (or at least made it much more unlikely) she would have to come back for a second taping schedule.

I get there are S&P issues, but it seems like with the possibility she would be in a much worse condition just two weeks later (not necessarily dead, just physically unable to play or even leave home to go to Los Angeles) they would try to lessen the chances of having to deal with the possibility of her not coming back at all.
