Am I the first to call BS on the blogger clue? I was clamming while trying to figure out what they would call a blogger whose subject matter is himself.

It's like them asking what you call somebody who writes a book about himself. Not too many people would ring is with 'author' or 'writer'.

If I had 50 cents for every math question I got right, I'd have $6.30 by now.

Coryat: $35,800
45 R/2 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: demography, Protestant, Cayenne, wormholes (DD), Best Buy (DD), Colombia

Sixty-one clues, guys. Is it really so much to ask?
Bamaman wrote:There were two key pieces of information:

1. A list of people you (as well as me and probably most everybody else here) have never heard of
2. The years 1920-1939

The names were the useless background noise.
They were more than noise to me. There was a French name, a Spanish name, and a name that sounds like it's from a language less familiar to Westerners (turns out it's Turkish). That helps to establish that it's an organization with a very wide geographic reach.

The presence of wordpress.com in the clue, and the absence of any variation of the word blog, made it obvious, I thought. Just because the guy Tom in the clue writes about himself, doesn't mean every blogger does.

Has anybody under 40 ever even heard of the League of Nations? Seems like it's an obscure footnote in history these days.

I'm over 40 and I don't recall learning a lot about it. It was brought up in the post-WWI discussion and all that was really said was that it was a UN-type group that Wilson proposed that we didn't join.

I'd think anyone who sat through World History or US History in high school would have heard a lot about it. The League's history is mostly about how ineffectual it was, but that was a pretty big part of the build up for WWII.

And I don't think it's any more obscure than most history clues over the years, and is it more obscure than the Hunley, for example?

Those are two of the top 10 highest mountains on Earth. Anybody who knows anything about mountaineering knows where they are. Anybody that has studied the highest mountains for trivial purposes knows where they are.

People just know stuff. Because they enjoy learning. Or because they want to acquire enough knowledge to be on Jeopardy.
But when do they ever ask for the tenth-superlative of anything at $200? "Annapurna" has only five other hits in the archive, so it's not like it's "well, everybody knows it" material.

Can you name the tenth-biggest of anything else?
I can't name the tenth largest U.S. state or tenth largest country, but I can guarantee you I've heard of them. Probably the tenth longest river, too.

Besides, Annapurna is very well-known if you follow mountain climbing at all. It's considered one of the most difficult mountains to climb and Herzog's account of climbing the mountain, titled "Annapurna" is a classic in adventure literature.

I've never heard of that mountain but Himalayas seems a safe guess for the top row.

Far less obscure. If you mentioned Hunley to me, I'd say "The doorman's dog from the Curious George cartoons?"

That, and all of the names Hammer mentioned sound like they come from South Asian languages. They certainly aren't Spanish (Andes), English (Rockies) or anything European (Alps, Urals, etc.).

In the 1970s I used to cut the lawn for a guy who was involved with the League Of Nations at the start of it.

I wouldn't be surprised if "demographics" were accepted, at least.
I agree, for the best of all possible reasons: that was my answer as well.

I didn't Know-know this FJ (didn't know LoN's exact years and never heard of its leaders), but certainly got it anyway, pretty much instantly. I'll take it!

Congrats to the new champ.

The League actually lasted until 1946, when the UN came into being. But I don't know if they did much during WWII.

I was sad to see Mukund go, but it was truly his own fault due to wagering errors.
Q: If it takes a chicken and a half a day and a half to lay an egg and a half, how long does it take a centipede to kick all the seeds out of a dill pickle?
A: Orange
Explanation: Ice cream has no bones.

"They sound like" is always a bad TOM if you ask me, because what "sounds" Asian to one person may not to another.

The 10th-largest under 11.
Still not sure you're getting this right. Have you been getting math lessons from TPH?
Let's try: "The 10th largest integer between -27 and +19, inclusive".

Though speaking of this confusion - I find it interesting how discussions of rankings where 1 = best, 2 = 2nd-best, and so on... that "highest" would refer to the "smallest", number-wise. As in, the "higher" ranked you are, the closer to #1, i.e. the smaller the number is. I'm always thinking, "Am I saying this right?"

Asking you what's a good TOM strikes me as a bad idea.

Languages are systems of rules and patterns. I'm sure that you can generally tell the difference between English, Spanish and French words, even if you've never heard the specific words before. Those of us who have exposed ourselves to a wider variety of languages are able to do the same thing with a wider variety of words.

I've said it a zillion times: if you ever get The Call, you should try to find out ahead of time when your tape date's shows are going to air and then memorize the shows from the same dates of the previous season. From tonight's Daytime J!, this DD in the category Downright Beastly: "These theoretical passageways are sometimes referred to as Einstein-Rosen bridges"

I seem to recall the centipede had a wooden leg, as I recall thinking I could hear mbclev plotzing from here.
