CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Cindy Vanderbur is from Indiana, and under the heading of "strange experiences", let's talk about the day you were driving to work...

[Cindy chuckles.]

Alex: And you heard a noise in the backseat of the car, and you turned around and...

Cindy: I--I was quite surprised, as was the raccoon that was in the backseat of the car... [chuckles] but we were in a really busy highway, and there wasn't much I could do except sort of, like, tu--go around a block and drive five blocks back to home and let it out... [chuckles] so while I did that, the raccoon climbed into the front seat, and then he got up on the dash, and I was really worried that he was coming to get on me, but, luckily for me, he just stayed up on the dash and just kinda looked around while I drove down the road, you know?

Alex: Made no aggressive move toward you, didn't frighten you?

Cindy: Well, I won't say he didn't frighten me... [laughing]

Alex: Oh. Okay. I und--

Cindy: But we made it through that.

Alex: All right.

Alex: Mike Garrett is a magazine editor from British Columbia who auditioned for Jeopardy! in Seattle and had a nice surprise waiting for him in his hotel room.

Mike: Yeah, it was, uh, a bucket of, uh, s--beer. It was a bucket of beer on ice, uh, waiting for me there, and a little note saying, uh, you know, "Knock 'em dead. Ken Jennings."

Cindy: Wow.

Mike: And I'm like, wow. Ken Jennings knows who I am. He knows that I'm in Seattle, and he found me out in this hotel, and then I turned it around. It was the name of a coworker on the back.

[Laughter]

Alex: Oh. Okay.

Alex: Dan Adkison is a copy editor from New York who found a mistake in Webster's.

Dan: I did. I was working for a newspaper, and we were running a story about the president of Brazil. The 11th edition of Webster's Dictionary had just come out, and we were looking up, and it had the name as "L-U-I-S"--"Luis Inacio Lula da Silva", and I said, "That's not right", and I started looking it up online, and I determined it was a "z", so I wrote in to Webster's on their web site, and I got an e-mail back saying, "Yes, you found a mistake in the new edition of Webster's."

Alex: And did they change it?

Dan: They did. They did. If you look in the latest edition, it's a "z".

Alex: Boy, how does it feel to have this much power?

[Laughter]

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
I LOVE PARIS $1000: The site of heavy fighting during World War I, this river joins the Seine at the Paris suburb of Charenton
(Mike: What is Ypres?)

FIVE FINGER EXERCISE $800: A Pac-Man ghost; use your "brain"
(Dan: What is Thinky?)
(Alex: [*]. Yes. No. And I gave the correct response. I thought he said, [*]. What did you say?)
(Dan: I said, "Thinky".)
(Alex: "Thinky"?)
[Dan laughs.]
(Alex: Oh. I've never even heard of that one.)

FIVE FINGER EXERCISE $1000: This unit used to measure the diameter of cigars is equal to 1/64 of an inch
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Cindy: $8,400
Dan: $4,400
Mike: $200

Ran Spring. Clammed on bibliography after "appendix" was BMSed, because as usual the BMS had me thinking it'd be a subset of "appendix" — I don't think of "bibliography" as that.

Paris was totally foreign to me. Nothing sounded remotely familiar. I didn't know Luxor was a thing outside Vegas, for one.

I live about two hours from Ocqueoc Falls but have never been there.

Precalled How to Train Your Dragon on "How To", which was also my only get there. I wonder if placing it next to the Hiccup clue in Dictionary was intentional.

FJ! — eh, 1 in 13 shot, but no matter what I pick it'll be the wrong one. Never would've thought NJ was pivotal at all due to its lack of size.

Good game Mark, but tough break against a strong competitor. Not that it ended up mattering, but of course you made the right wager to ensure the extra grand.

Instaget FJ!- though I wonder how many people thought it was Delaware :D

North Carolina? Really?

I've never heard it call the "Cockpit of the Revolution", but was fairly sure when the Battle of Trenton was.

Given his profession, the returning champ miscalculated when he went after the book category first. If he saves the DD he goes all in late in the first round and has at least a couple thousand more. In the end it didn't matter.

Tough board. Sorry about this heisman65. Your tone last week made me think that it didn't work out for you.

I'll quibble and point out that the Wright house is Fallingwater, one word, while the Florida park is two words. I actually think this makes it a bad clue.

FJ has me thinking NJ before the last clause gave it away.

I thought the champ had some very nice gets and I suspect she can hang around a bit.

Nice trashy questions today but legit stuff, too. I rather liked this board.

Same here, except that it took almost the full 30 seconds to remember that ("OK, December of '76, that was the battle of...err...yknow, crossing the Delaware...oh come on, you know this one..."). Me and the ol' grey matter need to have a talk.

I didn't realize what the Delaware crossing was associated with, and was only the most vaguely aware that a Battle of Trenton exists.

Spoiler alert: Nice to see the state of my birth being recognized for something other than Snookie, the Real Housewives or Tony Soprano.

It's a rather major city in Egypt. The obelisk that stands in Paris originally marked the entrance to the Luxor temple.

I thought that this board was well-written.

I should buy a lottery ticket...I won on the 50 50 90 guess between New York and New Jersey. I got one FJ correct last week that was a 50/50 guess (LBJ), one that was essentially a 50/50 guess (Monaco), and another one that was a lucky guess with not much to go on (the Air and Space Museum). I am never this lucky.

The FJ clue might have been a tad too on the trivial side for my tastes, but it was better than some of the ones that we have seen lately.

Too late now for any kind of retro-luck, but hope you enjoyed the experience.

Quick get based on the Battle of Trenton, even though no memory of "Cockpit of the Revolution" and the phrase had me puzzled for a couple of seconds.

Sorry it didn't work out, mike. But at least you got second place and a bucket of beer out of the deal.

I never heard of the cockpit of the Revolution. But I knew Washington crossed the Delaware into Trenton on Christmas 1776, so I went with that. I didn't think they did that much during the war, but just remembered the Battle of Monmouth.

If you want to read more about it.........

The Jersey state quarter has that scene on the reverse, right below it is the caption "Crossroads of the Revolution". Maybe that's what they really meant?

I'll add my sympathy as well, Mike. It's never really as much fun when it comes to an end like that, but I hope you did have fun. Good to see you up there.

Me? I whiffed. Never heard of that phrase, so I went uh ... December ... it's cold ... Valley Forge ... let's go with Pennsylvania. Rats.

I went there myself at first before noting the year and realizing that Valley Forge was later in the war. Tough neg bait, though.

Wow, very dramatic finish. Sorry it didn't work out for you Mike. At least Cindy got FJ too so you can't be too upset about how that last clue in DJ went down.

By any chance was your audition in August? I don't remember you for sure, but I know there were a few BCers there.

Nobody got Elvis?!? Or Rupert Brooke? Anyway, good questions and I was glad to Cindy win it. She looked a bit out of her league but she's actually quite good. The returning champ was annoying with his buzzing. Did he do that in the prior games?
