I'm still not following... Are you telling me that a DVR will delete one show to record another? What's the good of that?

You can program the DVR to save certain programs under any circumstances, but just like any device with a hard drive, there's only so much space on 'em. And recording in HD takes up a LOT of space.

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, the dvr holds about 25 hours of non-HD programs but if I record in HD it's a ton less. I tend to let some shows pile up such as Fringe & Mad Men while J! gets watched asap. I inadverently recorded the FO in HD & erased about 10 hours of the other shows mentioned.

Mine currently shows

832 programs, using 2.8 TB (21 days 19 hrs 17 mins) out of 13 TB (1.6 TB free)

And almost all of that is HD. Edit: All of the stuff I record off Antenna TV (as opposed to antenna TV) is SD.

If it ever deleted anything, I'd be furious.

And, it's wrong about the 13TB. It's actually 15TB. But the 1.6TB free is correct. Looks like it's time to add another 3TB.

I was wondering if that's what he meant. If so, is it safe to assume that it usually isn't great stuff?

Could it possibly be that the drive has 15 trillion bytes and is thus called 15TB by the manufacturer, but the drive itself knows 1TB as 2^40 bytes and hence calculates its 15 trillion bytes as 13TB and change?

That is quite possible exactly right. I had thought when I wrote that that it is actually 17TB which should be showing as 15TB, but I miscounted the number of 2TB drives in the array.
