Did you notice the difference in difficulty between the categories "Celebrities Favorite Movies" and "20th Century Literature"? In the movie category, the movies Brazil and Local Hero are things I've never heard of, whereas the hardest literary clue was a famous play by Edward Albee, a very famous playwright (although, admittedly, Three Tall Women is not as famous as Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?). I think this supports my theory that there is a great disparity in difficulty among categories.

How would I have ever known the bottom three clues in the British bands category? I don't know ( I was glad that I got the top two, haha). I recently bought a book called, The "Encyclopedia of Popular Music," (the abridged version), do you think I was ripped off?

I said "right of egress" for the right of way clue. Do you think that would count? I suppose the term is right of ingress and egress. What was the deal with the Der Rosenkavalier clue? The show gave the answer already - translated into English, right?

Another set of good boards for me. Was surprised that no one offered on Der Rosenkavalier when spotted "Knight of Roses" or whatever it was. FJ was also good IMO, but I'll never know if I'd have got it since my wife said "Madagascar?" halfway through Think Music. Good comeback victory by David spurred by successful DD hunting in DJ.

stevo: Netflix them into your queue immediately! Both very entertaining! Local Hero is just an absolute gem, and still holds up well, nigh onto these 30 years later.

Now, that zodiac rhyme time category was the right way to include a wordplay category; I agree with xxaaxx. I didn't appreciate the next capital alphabetically list. Indices are designed to keep information in alphabetical order, people's brains are not (at least I don't think they are - if you are a doctor and can prove me wrong, I'd love to see it). The category was not only hard, but not very interesting, and I think it may make the writers appear lazy. (say, just pick a capital from this pre-formatted list of state capitals, and ask for the next one in alphabetical order - the writers have the list in front of them, the contestants don't).

Do we have statistics to determine if DD hunting is an effective strategy? I would bet a person is just as likely to pick a DD by just picking any question.

Then what do you call the water east of Baja Peninsula? ;)

I got final after about 15 seconds, saw Haiti as immediate negbait (people may disagree with me), but the obvious part is its not an independent island.
And more importantly, it's not a big island consisting of one independent country.

France granted most of its African colonies independence in or around 1960 so that was one big hint. Oh yeah, plus they speak French in Madagascar & it's a huge island.

Easy DJ round for me: I only missed Eurydice & opera is not a strong suit. I wish they had finished the board but nice game all around.

It's not exclusively French; it's just one of the official languages. One tip-off is that the island sits across the Mozambique Channel. While the nation of Mozambique is a former colony of Portugal, its name is from the French.

Not only for the story and the acting performances, but an awesome soundtrack by Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits).

I've heard of all three of them - I've seen all three of them - and while I know folks around here study lists like Pulitzer Prizes I'm not sure Three Tall Women is more famous. Brazil, like many Terry Gilliam films, has a cult following. (And Local Hero, as others have said, is superb - Pat's still not my favorite, but my opinion of him has risen immeasurably.) And I don't think the fact that TTW, which is also superb, btw, was the one that stumped them helps make the case...Theater is often a troublesome subject for Jeopardy! contestants. Movies seldom are.

Madagascar - another obvious response in retrospect that just did not come to mind. It wasn't until about 15 seconds in that I reread the clue and realized that Haiti couldn't be right...

This reminds me of the "Merry Mary, will you marry me?" discussion we had a while ago.

If I had 50 cents for every math question I got right, I'd have $6.30 by now.

Aries seemed to be the easiest one left to work with and I didn't like carries, marries or tarries. Ferries and fairies I did consider. I had no inspiration for rhyming Gemini, Scorpio, Capricorn, Sagittarius, Aquarius, or Virgo. For Pisces all I could think of was the Chinese red envelopes in Cantonese and that seemed to be at the $4000 level.

So immediately following Jeopardy I went to Netflics to put Local Hero on my list, and there is a very long wait! Seems like I wasn't the only one wanting to see it.
