Hawaii

I live in CA and couldn't place Lassen even though I knew it sounded familiar.

"South by Southwest," switched from India to China, considered New York but settled in Florida. But then I switched from Madame Butterfly to Turandot, at least.

Alaska over NY, Madame Butterfly instead of Turandot.
But go me for getting all bonuses for a change!

No clue on Stalin and barely heard of Turandot. Wrote down M. Butterfly, knowing it was wrong.
Never heard of Lassen and couldn't recall Carter quickly enough.

First 5/5 week for me since early May. Only Thursday was a problem. I was far from sure NY fit the bill - I live in Queens and a lot of neighbors have cars. But then mass transit swayed me. But then I thought how big upstate is. But in the end I stayed with it.
Only 50/50 on volcanoes this week, though. Boo! for two clues on volcanoes...

Thanks to my love for Sir Alfred, I don't have to check the "missed'em all" box.
Got all 3 extras though. Yes to China, no to the non-contiguous.

No guess, no guess, swapped out India for a blank, Alaska, no guess.

Could've gotten Howard Carter with more time.

no
yes, with Hawaii

The FJs that I got were basically instant gets; the only one that I was absolutely sure of was Friday's, and the other two were educated guesses.

For Lassen I wanted to see if I was the only Californian not to get it.
For Iceland I wanted to see if it could hit 100% since it was up for discussion just back on June 26th. WTG, Hammer.

Was kind of hoping to see the Kursk clue as one of the additional clues ...

Alaska for the state with lots of unlicensed drivers (in the game thread I discussed the reasons why NY wasn't at all an obvious choice); and Madame Butterfly for the opera.

For the rest, I said Alaska for the state containing Mt. Lassen. The Last Frontier really messed me up this week. :D

ETA: I'm not surprised that, as I write this, "non-contiguous states" is tied with people who answered with New York on Thursday's FJ.

I'm 0-10 on FJ's the last two weeks...

Turandot?????? I've heard of the opera, have heard the most famous aria FROM that opera (Nessun Dorma), but never actually knew the story. Turandot doesn't sound like a name to me, male, female or otherwise, so I never even considered it.

Guessed "Geyser" for the Iceland q, got the other extras.

I'd say that's an excellent reason. Congrats!

Maybe you figured people were dissuaded from driving because of the damn toll? (Here's hoping that the next holidays I pass through there, those new EZPass express lanes actually help matters.)
